Unread postby Simon V. » December 14th, 2007, 5:18 pm

Hi :)

In the future, please run HijackThis in Normal Mode.

Step 1

Please download ATF Cleaner. Double-click on ATF-Cleaner.exe to start the program.

  • Under the Main tab, put a check next to Select All.
Click the Empty Selected button. (Note: if you remove cookies, automated login at forums and sites will be disabled. If you do not want this, uncheck Cookies)
  • If you use the Firefox browser:
Click on Firefox at the top and put a check next to Select All.
If you would like to keep your saved passwords, click No at the prompt.
Click the Empty Selected button. (Note: if you remove cookies, automated login at forums and sites will be disabled. If you do not want this, uncheck Cookies)
  • If you use the Opera browser:
Click on Opera at the top and put a check next to Select All.
If you would like to keep your saved passwords, click No at the prompt.
Click the Empty Selected button. (Note: if you remove cookies, automated login at forums and sites will be disabled. If you do not want this, uncheck Cookies)

Step 2

Please download Combofix:

Double-click on combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a log for you. Save it to a convenient location.

Note: Do not mouseclick Combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.

Step 3

Open HijackThis.

  • Click on the Config button.
  • Click on the Misc Tools button.
  • Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
  • Click on the Save list... button and save the file to a convenient location. When you press Save, Notepad will open with the contents of that file.

Step 4

In your next reply, please post:

  • the Combofix log (C:\Combofix.txt)
  • the Uninstall List (uninstall_list.txt)
  • a new HijackThis log

Hi

Thank you for getting back to me. Here's the info you've requested. However, I was not able to get the uninstall_list.txt for you. I followed your instructions but nothing happened with I clicked the save list button, the program seems to shut down. Notepad never came up at all. I did a control-alt-delete and nothing was running? Anything else I could try for that?

Here are the other results:

The Combofix.txt

Hi :)

You are running a very old copy of Combofix. Please delete the one you currently have and download the newest version:

... then run the program again (see my previous post for instructions).

For the Uninstall List, please do the following:

Dwnload and install CCleaner.

  • Open CCleaner. In the Left Pane, click Tools.
  • Verify that Uninstall is highlighted in color, or click on it.
  • In the lower right, click Save to Text File.
  • Pull down the arrow at the top of the Save dialog and choose Desktop as the location.
  • You can leave the filename as install.txt.
  • Click Save.
  • Exit Ccleaner by clicking on the X button in the upper right of the CCleaner window.

In your next reply, please post:

  • the Combofix log (C:\Combofix.txt)
  • the CCleaner Uninstall List (install.txt)
  • a new HijackThis log

Thank you again for the quick reply! Sorry about the version. The one I used for this scan seemed to be much more thorough. :-)

Here are the results you have now requested:

Re: Please help me with my Hijack log

Unread postby Simon V. » December 15th, 2007, 5:00 pm

Hi :)

I understand that downloading music and other files may be important to you; however, the Peer-to-Peer programs that you are using to do that, even if they are not infected with malware, will bring malware into your system. Therefore, the chances of you becoming infected again are very high. This obviously can result in disabling your computer and could even lead to someone stealing sensitive personal data from your computer. Beyond the inconvenience this causes you, these programs also tend to use your computer as a server to spread more infection all over the internet, so your computer becomes a part of the malware problem.

Remember that no matter how clean the program you're using for Peer-to-Peer filesharing may be, it offers no guarantees regarding the cleanliness of files you may choose to download. All files available via Peer-to-Peer filesharing carry a high risk, particularly those that offer you illegitimate methods of using legitimate software programs without paying for them. Any program or file that offers you the ability to access non-freeware programs at no cost, e.g., pirated software and/or cracks/key generators for gaining access to legitimate software, is 100% guaranteed to contain malware.

Here is some information that looks at the rates of infection:

http://www.benedelman.org/spyware/p2p/

With that being said, I recommend that you remove the following Peer-to-Peer program(s):

LimeWire 4.9.29

Step 1

Open Notepad (Go to Start > Run, type Notepad and hit Enter), and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

Code: Select all
File::

C:\WINDOWS\system32\cbmorhjm.ini
C:\WINDOWS\system32\yaoahibw.ini
C:\pgdxf.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\e404d.dll
C:\-798280981

Registry::

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ShellServiceObjectDelayLoad]
"E404Helper"=-

Click on File > Save as....

In the File Name box, copy/paste CFScript.txt (Note: Do not change the filename!)

Click Save (Save the CFScript in the same location as Combofix.exe)

Image

Referring to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe.
It will create a log. Be sure to save it to a convenient location.

Step 2

Click on Start, then Control Panel. Double click on Add or Remove Programs.

Please remove the following program(s):

  • J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0
  • J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 1
  • J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 10
  • J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 3
  • J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 4
  • J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
  • Java(TM) 6 Update 2

Then download and install Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 3.

Step 3

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner.

Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner. On the welcome screen, click Accept.

You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, click Install.

  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files.
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on Next.
  • Now click on Scan Settings.
  • In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:

  • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:

    Extended (if available, otherwise Standard)

  • Scan Options:

    Scan Archives
    Scan Mail Bases

  • Click OK.
  • Now under Select a Target to Scan:

    Select My Computer.

  • The program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
  • Now click on the Save as Text button and save the file to your desktop.

Step 4

In your next reply, please post:

  • the Combofix log (C:\Combofix.txt)
  • the Kaspersky Online Scan report
  • a new HijackThis log

Hello Again.

Thank you again for all your assistance.

Limewire has been removed. This computer belonged to someone else before I got it. I have never used Limewire, but it has now been deleted.

I have followed all of your latest instructions and here are the logs you have now requested.

The Combofix log:

Re: Please help me with my Hijack log

Hi :)

Step 1

Open HijackThis, perform a scan and put a check next to the following items:

Note: Only fix the following items if you, your system administrator, or Spybot Search and Destroy haven't set these restrictions.

O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions present
O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present
O6 - HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions present
O6 - HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present

Close all programs except HijackThis and click on Fix checked.

Step 2

Navigate to the following files/folders using Windows Explorer and delete them when found:

C:\Documents and Settings\Isabelle\.housecall6.6\Quarantine\ <-- Delete everything inside of this folder, not the folder itself!

Step 3

Click Start then Run....

  • Type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. (Note: The space between the x and the /u needs to be there)

    Image

  • When shown the disclaimer, select 2.

In your next reply, let me know how your computer is running.

Unread postby tetley » December 16th, 2007, 3:24 pm

Hello again!

All I can say is WOW! What a difference. That computer has never been so fast!

I can tell you however that when I did the Combofix /u, I never did get a select, it just came up and said Combofix had been uninstalled.

Also, my main reason for contacting you was my ISP provider had put a block on my modem as I was sending spam over the world. Also, whever I went into Internet Explorer, I was constantly getting pop-ups and being redirected to some uninviting websites. I have had the computer "off-line" while I have been communicating with you, however I did put it online to run the Kaspersky online scanner. I have now left the computer online and will monitor it today as I'm sure my ISP will be doing as well.

Are you saying the computer is now "clean" and virus free? I am concerned about the viruses found in the Kaspersky log.

How can I ever thank you for all your help? You have been a life saver and I can't thank you enough! Also, what can I do in the future so this doesn't happen again?

Again, thank you!

Your help has been much appreciated!

Hi :)

You're very welcome, I'm glad to hear your computer is running OK again :D

Are you saying the computer is now "clean" and virus free? I am concerned about the viruses found in the Kaspersky log.

Yes, your logs look clean. The virusses found by Kaspersky were either in the backups folder of Combofix (which we removed by uninstalling it) or in the quarantine folder of Housecall. Nothing to worry about ;)

How can I ever thank you for all your help? You have been a life saver and I can't thank you enough!

This isn't obligatory of course, as the service we provide is still free, but you can always donate to keep this site alive.

Also, what can I do in the future so this doesn't happen again?

Follow these simple steps to keep your computer clean in the future:

Disable and Enable System Restore - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and re-enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.

Step 1: Turn off System Restore:

  • On the desktop, right-click My Computer
  • Click Properties
  • Click the System Restore tab
  • Check Turn off System Restore
  • Click Apply, and then click OK

Step 2: Reboot your computer.

Step 3: Turn on System Restore:

  • On the desktop, right-click My Computer
  • Click Properties
  • Click the System Restore tab
  • Uncheck Turn off System Restore
  • Click Apply, and then click OK

Note: Only do this once, NOT on a regular basis!

Make your Internet Explorer More Secure

  • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
  • Click once on the Security tab.
  • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
  • Click once on the Custom Level button.

    • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt.
    • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable.
    • Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable.
    • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt.
    • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt.
    • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt.
    • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
    • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.

  • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

Update your Anti-Virus Software - It is very imprtant that you update your anti-virus software at least once a week (even more if you wish). If you do not update your anti-virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that will come out.

Use a Firewall - Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. The Windows firewall isn't sufficient as it only monitors incoming connections.

Here are a few (free) firewalls, please download and install one of them:

Visit Microsoft's Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://update.microsoft.com/ regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will add a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs. An article on anti-malware products with links for this program and others can be found here:
Computer Safety on line - Anti-Malware

Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Stand Up and Be Counted! - Please take the time to tell us what you would like to be done about the people who are behind all the problems you have had. We can only get something done about this if the people that we help, like you, are prepared to complain. We have a dedicated forum for collecting these complaints: Malware Complaints. You have to be registered to post. After registering just find your country room and register your complaint. The infection you had was Vundo (Virtumundo).
