I recently had one of my forum accounts breached and it was suggested I come here. I've ran AVG, Spybot S&D, Ad-Aware, a-squared, TrojanHunter. They didn't turn up anything but two false positives from a-square (Leechget - my download manager) and TrojanHunter (WinRAR).

Hi bonelifer,

The hacking of your forum account could have been achieved a number of ways, only one of which is compromise of this computer, however to be on the safe side, my advice to you would be to change any important passwords (e.g. online banking, PayPal, email accounts, etc) from another computer and to not use this computer for sensitive purposes until we've finished looking at it.

The forum account issue aside, have you had any problems or have you noticed anything unusual about the operation of your computer?

There are a couple of unusual startup items showing in your log:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [music SUBST] C:\sub.bat
O4 - Global Startup: run_startmenu.cmd
Do you know anything about them?
Unless you are 100% sure of what these are, then please upload them for checking:
  • Please open this page in your browser:
    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/submit- ... channel=32
  • Please fill in the link to topic field with a link to this topic
  • Copy/paste this filename into the Browse to the file you want to submit field:
    C:\sub.bat
  • Then press Send File, this will upload the file for analysis
  • The repeat the process for this file:
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\run_startmenu.cmd

Please download F-Secure Blacklight to your Desktop (right-click the link, select Save Target As..., select your Desktop and press Save)
  • Double click fsbl.exe to run it, choose I accept the agreement then press Scan
  • It will create the fsbl-xxxxxxx.log on your desktop containing a list of all items found.
  • Do not choose to rename any because legitimate items can also be present.
  • Exit Blacklight and post the contents of the log in your next reply.

Then download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS)
  • Close all applications and windows.
  • Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  • When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt<-this one will be minimized
  • Make sure Format->Word Wrap is unchecked
  • Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your reply

Once complete, please post the Blacklight log and both DSS logs, you won't need to produce a new HijackThis log as DSS produces one for you.

The C:\sub.bat is a batch file I created to use the DOS SUBST to give drive letters to two folders. I uploaded it anyway, but the contents were the same as when I created it. I'm not sure but the "run_startmenu.cmd" maybe left over from a program I installed which resorted the Startmenu at startup (no longer install) or it maybe some sloppy work done by the E-Machine factory techs (as it just runs another CMD file which doesn't exist).

Hi bonelifer,

Yes those two files you uploaded are not bad, up to you if you want either of them to run and if you would like assistance to remove either or both then let me know.

There are quite a number of system policy settings in the registry set to non-default values, some examples:
  • .txt files are set to open using a program called Win32Pad
  • The Start Menu pinned programs list has been removed
  • The Start Menu frequently user programs list has been removed
  • The "Shared Documents" object has been removed from My Computer
  • Changes to Internet Explorer settings have been restricted (this was probably done by Spybot for your protection)
None of these appear to be malware related or 'bad' but as they are non-default I need to ask if you are aware of this and whether these settings are intentional.

Please open Start->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs, look down the list for these items and remove them:
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 10
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 11
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2
Java(TM) 6 Update 2
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1
These are out of date and now a security risk, you already have installed the latest update which is version 6 update 3 - don't remove this one.

You have Viewpoint Media Player installed on your system. This program is not malware but it is foistware in that it is usually installed without the user's knowledge or approval, and for this reason I recommend you remove it. If you actually use this program, I recommend you try using safe and free alternatives such as VLC Media Player.
To remove, open Start->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs find Viewpoint Media Player and select Remove

You have uTorrent and eMule, P2P file sharing programs installed on your computer. These programs do not come bundled with malware as some similar programs do, but peer-to-peer file sharing networks are one of the biggest sources of malware we see. Anything downloaded from them cannot be trusted to be clean, because even if the file appears to be what it claims to be, it can have malware embedded in it.
I recommend you remove them, but of course the choice is yours.
You can remove uTorrent and eMule via Add/Remove Programs.

Backup Your Registry with ERUNT:
  • Download erunt.zip to your Desktop from here:
    http://aumha.org/downloads/erunt.zip
  • Right-click erunt.zip, select Extract All... and follow the prompts to extract ERUNT to a new folder on your Desktop
  • Inside the new folder, double-click ERUNT.exe to start the program
  • OK all the prompts to back up your registry to the default location.
Note: to restore your registry, go to the backup folder and start ERDNT.exe

Then, open Notepad (press Start->Run, enter notepad and press OK)
Copy everything inside the code box below (Starting with REGEDIT4) and paste it into a new notepad file.
Change the Save As Type to All Files and save it as fix.reg to your Desktop.

Note: Please copy and paste all the text at once, and check that there is NO blank line above REGEDIT4 and one blank line at the bottom.
Code: Select all
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar\WebBrowser]
"{A8FB8EB3-183B-4598-924D-86F0E5E37085}"=-

[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{A8FB8EB3-183B-4598-924D-86F0E5E37085}]

[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\PeoplePal Toolbar]

[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\TypeLib\{994D628D-4D22-4DB9-B6DB-F7D9F1635817}]

Locate fix.reg on your Desktop, if you did it right it should look like this:Image
Double-click it, when it asks if you want to merge with the registry, click Yes.

Now reboot your computer.

Use Windows Explorer (right-click Start, select Explore) to find and delete the following folder:
C:\Program Files\PeoplePC

I know you've done a lot of scans but please do one more for me:

Open Kaspersky Online Scanner in Internet Explorer

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky,
Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT and then Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
      Scan Archives
      Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:
      Select My Computer
  • The program will start to scan your system.
  • Once the scan is complete, click on the Save as Text button and save the file to your desktop
Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license is accepted, reset to 100%.

Once complete, please post the Kaspersky report and a new HijackThis log.

Win32pad (http://www.gena01.com/win32pad/) is the Notepad replacement I use. All the other changes are changes I made. Including the restrictions to IE (registry tweaks, ie not Spybot), which basically prevent me from running Kaspersky as it uses ActiveX. I use Firefox 99% of the time, so I opted to severely cripple dangerous components of IE like ActiveX so that programs can't run them in the background.

silver wrote:Please open Start->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs, look down the list for these items and remove them:
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 10
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 11
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2
Java(TM) 6 Update 2
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1
These are out of date and now a security risk, you already have installed the latest update which is version 6 update 3 - don't remove this one.

Done.

silver wrote:You have Viewpoint Media Player installed on your system.

Done. A month ago I was previewing some free players. Apperently Viewpoint didn't add a visible entry in the Add/Remove Panel. I was able to use the Revo Uninstaller program to remove Viewpoint.

silver wrote:You have uTorrent and eMule, P2P file sharing programs installed on your computer.

I uninstalled eMule as I don't use it anymore, but I need to use uTorrent to download VMWare Appliances(currently uninstalled after reinstalling XP last time).

silver wrote:Backup Your Registry with ERUNT:

Done. I thought I had got all the PeoplePC software removed after stopping use of their awful service.

OK, in that case please scan with Dr.WEB CureIt:

Download the program to your desktop from here:
ftp://ftp.drweb.com/pub/drweb/cureit/cureit.exe
  • Double-click cureit.exe to start the program.
  • Press Start and then OK to start the Express scan
  • The Express scan takes just a few moments to finish, if something is found, click Yes to cure it
  • Once the short scan has finished, Click Options->Change settings
  • Choose the Scan tab and UN-CHECK Heuristic analysis
  • Choose the Actions tab and make these changes:
    • Next to Infected objects select Report
    • Next to Incurable objects select Report
    • Next to Infected containers select Report
  • At the bottom-left, UN-CHECK Prompt on action, then press OK to close the settings box.
  • Note: These settings changes are IMPORTANT, please ensure you have made them before scanning
  • Then select Complete scan and press the green arrow to start the scan
  • When the scan is complete, click File-> Save report list and save the report to your desktop and close Dr Web Cureit

Once complete, please post the Dr Web report and a new HijackThis log.

Both the initial short scan and the Complete Scan with altered settings show that no viruses were found. The option to save was greyed out. Did you want the CureIt.log?

Hi bonelifer,

If nothing was found then no need to post that log. Your machine appears to be clean of malware, however if you have symptoms or any reasons to suspect infection please let me know.

Here are a couple of suggestions to help you keep your computer clean:

You have good protection software installed however please ensure it is kept up to date. Check that your antivirus and antispyware programs are set to automatically update themselves daily, and that your firewall is the latest version.

Download and install the free version of WinPatrol. This program protects your computer in a variety of ways and will work well with your existing security software. Have a look at this tutorial to help you get started with the program.

The NoScript Firefox extension can protect you from malicious sites by allowing Javascript and Java to execute only from domains you choose to trust. It can also block Flash, Quicktime and other potentially exploitable plugins as well as providing protection from Cross-Site Scripting attacks. For more information, see the NoScript FAQ page or watch an introduction to the plugin on YouTube.

Please post back to let me know that you have read this, and if there are any further issues.
