Copy/paste the following quote box into a new notepad (not wordpad) document. Make sure that wordwrap is turned off.

attrib -s -h C:\boot.ini
copy C:\boot.ini C:\boot.txt
attrib +s +h C:\boot.ini
notepad.exe C:\boot.txt

Save it to your Desktop as cleanup.bat. Save it as:
File Type: All Files (not as a text document or it wont work).
Name: cleanup.bat

Locate cleanup.bat on your Desktop and double-click it. A DOS window will open briefly and then close, this is normal
Once it has finished a notepad window will open. Copy and past the contents of that window as a reply to this topic

What have you done to your system before posting here?

Can you post the exact text that you get at the boot menu?

I don't know what you mean. What did I do to my system before I wrote you the first time? I'm thinking that's what you meant. This is basically my teens computer or she is the dominant user. I had a problem this summer. I have a password on the computer for 2 users and admin. This is how I control her use of it. She would stay up all night if I didn't have a restriction. I made the mistake of her name being the admin the first time. I needed to change the password one night because she had figured it out, but I had some drinks with friends and forgot what I changed it to the next morning. So of course I could not get into my computer at all. I had a friend come over and fix it for me and no clue what he did. I now have 3 users and keep track of all passwords. My daughter is no longer the administrator. All I know is we didn't loose anything but he had to use some software from my laptop I bought in 04. Does that answer anything? Merry xmas!

Other things that are strange: when I restart my computer, the first thing that appears is a dos comment asking if it should start Windows home edition or buisness and gives a countdown

Please post the exact text you get at that screen

This is in black and white. Text appears as follows:

Please select the operating system to start
Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
Microsoft Windows XP Buisness Edition

Use the up and down arrow keys to move the highlighted box to your choice
Press enter to choose
Seconds until hilighted choice will be started in 24 sec (This counts down)

For troubleshooting Press f8

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

This screen goes to a grey box with a blue stripe on top. Today is has a small box an a funky looking Y in the blue stipe and a box with ok at the bottom of the grey box. The letters are different all the time and are not found on a keyboard.
