submitting a log file for help

Unread postby alba_greeneyes » December 1st, 2007, 8:24 pm

Hello,
Below is a log file that i would appreciate having someone look at. My computer is lagging badly part of the time. Only portions of a window opens occasionally, I get strange ads coming up and they won't let me click them off. I did not have a firewall running for a while and I am afraid something has taken over my computer. And spybot has been telling me that everything is fine which is surprising because prior to this spybot always had a few things to be removed.

No need to be sorry

That's not looking too bad :)

As a personal preference, I would recommend getting rid of RegistryMechanic
here is a quote from a fairly indepth discussion on reg cleaners
Most reg cleaners aren't "bad" as such, but they aren't perfect and even the best have been known to cause problems.
The point we are trying to make is that the risk of using one far outweighs any benefit.
If it does work perfectly you will not see any difference
If it doesn't work properly you may end up with an expensive doorstop.

let's check a couple of things

Submit a File For Analysis
We need to have the files below Scanned by Uploading them/it to Virus Total

Please visit Virustotal
Copy/paste the the following file path into the window

C:\Program Files\Netscape Internet Service\ncupdatesvc.exe

Click Submit/Send File
Please post back, to let me know the results.
If Virustotal is too busy please try Jotti

Fix With HJT
Close all other windows and then start HiJack This
Click Do A System Scan Only
When it has finished scanning put a check next to the following lines
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://search.netzero.net/
O2 - BHO: PBlockHelper Class - {4115122B-85FF-4DD3-9515-F075BEDE5EB5} - C:\PROGRA~1\NETSCA~1\NETSCA~1\pbhelper.dll
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)
O23 - Service: Netscape Update Service (NCUpdateSvc) - Netscape Communications Corporation - C:\Program Files\Netscape Internet Service\ncupdatesvc.exe

- Close ALL open windows (especially Internet Explorer!)-
Now click Fix checked
Click yes to any prompts
Close HijackThis

Logs/Information to Post in Reply
Please post the following logs/Information in your reply
  • The Virus Total results
  • A fresh HJT log
  • How are things running now ?

hi Katana,

Thank you for your help. I misunderstood why you were asking about netscape lol.

The virustotal result was 0.

Below is the Hijack This new scan. It does not seem to have removed the 023 file.

I have not really used the computer except to do this so I don't know how it is really doing right now but will mess around tonight an let you know.

BTW, Netscape Internet Service and Netscape Web Accelerator are downloaded in my computer. When I quit using Netscape I just never removed them. Should I do that?

OK, something is preventing the fix and there are programs running that are not showing in the start up.
Lets look a bit deeper :)

Deckard's System Scanner
Download Link >> Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) <<Link to your Desktop. Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.
  1. Close all applications and windows.
  2. Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  3. When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt<-this one will be minimized
  4. Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt and the extra.txt to your post. in your reply

hi Katana!

When you say close all applications, I am not sure I know what that means. AVG has a little symbol in the lower right hand corner of my computer beside my volume control. Do I quit that to clear it from there? I already closed the quicktime symbol and messenger symbol.
There is a symbol "safely remove hardware" beside my volume control also.

I love your smiley faces. When i click on them, I just get the word not the picture :?

You shouldn't need to close AVG,
DSS will be able to run, it is just that it may be a bit slower.

safely remove hardware is fine also, you can leave that as it is

Hi Alba

There is no obvious malware there, but there are a couple of strange items.
So before we go any further I will need some info from you :)

Only portions of a window opens occasionally, I get strange ads coming up and they won't let me click them off

These windows that don't open, are they when you are on the internet or when you run a particular program ?
What do the ads that popup advertise ?

I can see quite a few games installed, they look like they came with the PC --- do you use them at all ?

Let's make sure nothing is hiding
Kaspersky Online Scanner .

Go Here http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner ( please use IE. and allow active X)

Read the Requirements and limitations before you click Accept.
Allow the ActiveX download if necessary
Once the database has downloaded, click Next.
Click Scan Settings and change the "Scan using the following antivirus database" from standard to extended and then click OK.
Click on "My Computer" and then put the kettle on!
When the scan has completed, click Save Report As...
Enter a name for the file in the Filename: text box and then click the down arrow to the right of Save as type: and select text file (*.txt)
Click Save - by default the file will be saved to your Desktop, but you can change this if you wish.

Please post the report in your reply.

Hi Katana,

Before I do the scan I should tell you something i had forgotten. For some time now, I have occasionally been getting a "Internet explorer has encountered problem and must that Internet Explorer must close. I send a report to Microsoft and it always comes back that they don't know what the problem is though not in those terms. (after it closes, I just click on Internet Explorer on the desktop and it works fine) But, last night, I got "Internet Explorer has a corupted file that cannot be analyzed" It was a system error I guess. This corrupted file has never come up before.

Also, while i was in one window reading a blog site earlier in the day, my computer suddenly flipped to a prior window. I did not click back or anything, it just happened.

Both the corrupted file and the flipping issue have come up since running the "dss scan". Could that have caused it?

I was wondering if my problems could be within internet explorer? Also, should i change to Mozilla and quit using Internet Explorer? Or, does Interent Explorer need to be removed?
I thought maybe we should address the Interent Explorer issue before continuing with the scan you just sent to me. I am afraid that if Internet Explorer quits working that I won't have a browser and won't be able to access the internet. I don't really know how these things work so am not intelligent on browsers.

As to the games, I never play them and could remove them at any time. Is that something you would suggest I do now?

What a puzzle. :cyclopsani:

It is unlikely that DSS has caused the problem, all DSS does is "read" the drive it doesn't fix anything.
I would definitely recommend using something other than IE for surfing the web as a general rule,
Unfortunately getting rid of it completely is not possible as it is required for updating.

FireFox
  • With many addons available that make customization easy this is a very popular choice
  • NoScript and AdBlockPlus addons are essential

You could try reinstalling IE
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/produc ... dwide.mspx

We can get back to the games when this is sorted :king:
