Very slow computer and hopeless parental controls

Unread postby DO498 » November 21st, 2007, 3:49 pm

Hi all,
This computer takes ages to start up since installing BT (Yahoo) broadband and their pre-bundled Norton Internet Security. The intenet parental controls aren't working effectively and the internet facility is very flakey!! I wonder if you could look at the log and advise if there is anything I can do to (a) speed it up (b) strip out all the unnecessary rubbish, (c) rationalise parental controls and (d) make it more robust??? Thanks very much. DO, log follows:

Hi Kotaguy,
Thanks for picking up this problem for me. Here's a new HijackThis log for your perusal. The people (BT/Yahoo) who provided Broadband for this computer bundled in Norton Anti-virus (2006 version, I think). Turning off the "Auto-protect" function seems to speed up the start-up process coz I think it was doing a quick scan every time the machine gets turned on. Is there any way of stopping that scan without turning of auto-protect? Also, this used to be an office machine, but is now soley used for "domestic" purposes - so if there's anything on the log that looks like it's "business-orientated", it can probably be ditched! Starting up the internet session seems to be a bit of a hit-and-miss affair - not sure if this coz of the BT/Yahoo Parental control management or not. Anyway, "slow and flakey" seems to be the problem. I'm also looking at taking as much data off the C:\ drive (30GB used, 9GB free) as possible and moving it to the D drive (264 MB used, 114GB free!!) - do you reckon this will ease matters /improve performance?

Woah.... what happened to the rest of what was in your original log? All the lines from the R lines to the 017's are missing. Did you happen to mistakenly cut some out when copying/pasting? Or have you fixed a bunch of stuff with HijackThis?

Good morning,
Sorry about that, the log does seem rather short, doesn't it?! Here's a re-generated version that seems closer to what I should have posted earlier. It will be a tad shorter coz I deleted a couple of spurious programs that the user didn't want / need. Hope you can make use of it. fyi: the machine is used by a Mum and two teenagers. Log follows:

Cheers, D

Thanks... that looks better.

Can you please run HijackThis. Click the Misc Tools button. Click the Uninstall Manager button. Then the Save List button. Save the list to the Desktop.

Copy/Paste the contents of that list in your next reply please.

Hi ya,

Sorry for the delay in responding. I've not been able to get at the target computer to do as you've asked yet. It'll be a few more days before I'm able to return to it, so please don't closethe log due to lack of response! I WILL get to it soonish! In the meantime, can you guys recommend a free / more cost-effective option to Norton a/v: one with and one not necessarily with parental controls - but both of which would have an updating service?

Thanks, D.

No problem... just post back when you can get through the instructions.

As for a free AV solution... I've always found AVGFree to be a good one. Might wanna try that one out.

Re: Very slow computer and hopeless parental controls

Unread postby 'KotaGuy » December 8th, 2007, 12:48 pm

Search for and delete this file:

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\f3PSSavr.scr

Other than that... your HijackThis log looks good. Some things in your Restore Points that we will get rid of shortly.

How is the Computer behaving?

Hi ya, deleted the offending file as requested - so that's that. The mum says that the system doesn't seem to be freezing as often as before we started so that's brill news. The problems remaining are (a) still slow to boot up (but we think this may be due to the Norton start-up scan which we can only turn off if we also switch off Auot-Protect?). (b) still unsure of the effectiveness of the Parental Controls as set up. Each user has to enter a password before accessing the internet (rather than a login-password to gain access to the computer). It seems that some sites are saying that you need parental approval to access a site, but this is in "lo-light" and the site is visible and active!!! (Pretty hopeless!). Anyway will leave you with these thoughts and look forward to chatting again soon! Meanwhile I'm going to look at these Parental controls some more!
All the best D.

Now that your computer is clean, its a good time to reset your System Restore point. This will ensure a clean backup to fall upon if you ever need it. To do this:
  • Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
  • Click the System Restore tab.
  • Check the "Turn off System Restore" or "Turn off System Restore on all drives"
Reboot your computer, follow the steps above, this time unchecking the "Turn off System Restore" and reboot.

If the computer is not longer being used by the business... you can fix these lines with HijackThis:

O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\Parameters: Domain = crescent-suzuki.com
O17 - HKLM\Software\..\Telephony: DomainName = crescent-suzuki.com
O17 - HKLM\System\CS1\Services\Tcpip\Parameters: Domain = crescent-suzuki.com

The slow boot up may well be caused by Norton. I'm really not a big fan of the product. Its bloated and infests a system as badly as any virus does. You may want to think about ditching it altogether. If so I re-suggest going with AVGFree for an Anti-Virus solution.

And if you aren't using a Firewall... you should. A couple good ones are ZoneAlarm and Comodo Personal Firewall. They're both free as well.

As for the Parental Controls... I can't give much advice on that matter. I've never used them on my PCs(my kids are only 10months old) so I really don't know why its acting the way it is.

Anything else?

Hi ya,

I've not been able to get to the computer in question to go through tthe last changes you suggested I'm afraid and I know the owner is up her neck in Christmas preparations and activities - so I'm not likely to be able to get to it for another good few days yet. Please don't archive this log till you hear fom me again!! Mrs Computer does say that she is happy that the machine HAS speeded up which is partially the reason why she'd now rather focus on getting the all the Xmas challenges out the way.

In the meantime - Anti-virus etc... thanks for your advice re AVG. I've loaded Freeware 7.5, Anti-Rootkit and Ant-spyware 7.5. What I need to do is to provide as much protection on the machine as possibe. For instance I know they're very anxious about on-line transaction processing / identity theft etc. So would it be more sensible to make them pay for an all-inclusive "Internet Secrurty " facility or is there a cocktail of products out there which will do the job better than an "off the shelf solution - but will not hog system resources? (Take your point about Norton Internet Security, by the way. Despite th faft that they calim to have made 2008 less machine intensive, but do we believe them?!!!)

Thanks for all your help... much appreciated.

Alll the best, DO.
