Good morning. :)

I'll be happy to help you sort out your problem. In order to help me with this, please note the following points:
  • If you have any questions or problems - stop and ask
  • It's important that you do not take any independent action to clean the computer (e.g. scans and clean-up programs)
  • Please continue until I give the "all clear". The symptoms may disappear quite quickly, but this doesn't mean that the computer is clean
----------------------------------------------

Firewall

I cannot see any sign that you are using a firewall. Are you using Windows XP Firewall? If not, I suggest that you switch it on immediately. I will make some further recommendations once we have got your computer clean.

--------------------------------------------

Download OTMoveIt by OldTimer to your Desktop. Do not use it yet.

--------------------------------------------

Disable Programs

We need to disable the following programs as they may interfere with our fix.

Windows Defender:
  • Open Windows Defender
  • Click Tools => General Settings
  • Scroll down and uncheck Turn on real-time protection (recommended).
  • Click Save
  • Close Windows Defender
AVG Anti-Spyware Resident Shield

Please check the following settings:
  • Click the Shield icon at the top.
  • Under Resident shield is... make sure that this shows as inactive or not available in the free version.
  • Change it, if necessary.
Close AVG Anti-Spyware. Do not scan.

TrojanHunter

Please disable or shut down TrojanHunter. I haven't got the instructions for this, but let me know if you have any problems.

-----------------------------------------

Run HijackThis and click Scan and then check (tick) the following, if present (don't worry if any are missing):

O2 - BHO: Media Holding Enterprises, LLC - {0D39A900-0F3A-4C29-A254-3E65244FDC34} - C:\Program Files\ContextTool\ContextTool-2.dll
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MDNS] C:\WINDOWS\system32\service.exe

Close down all programs, browsers and other open windows. Make sure that only the above items are checked and then click on Fix checked.

-----------------------------------------

OTMoveIt
  • Double-click OTMoveIt.exe to launch it.
  • Copy/Paste the contents of the box below into the left hand pane of OTMoveIt - (Do not type it).
C:\WINDOWS\system32\service.exe

  • Click the Move It button.
  • The list will be processed and the results will appear in the right hand pane.
  • If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.
  • When finished click Exit to exit the programme.
  • A log - C:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles\mmddyyyy_hhmmss.log will be created (where mmddyyyy_hhmmss are numbers giving date and time the log was created).
-----------------------------------------

Pleasee run another HijackThis scan and post the following, as a reply to this thread:
  • The OTMoveIt log
  • A new HijackThis log
Please let me know whether you are still getting the second browser window.

    • Under Reports - Select Do not automatically generate reports.
    • Under What to scan? - Select Scan every file.
You can now close AVG Anti-Spyware. Do not scan yet.

-----------------------------------------

Boot to Safe Mode.

You will need to reboot your computer into Safe Mode for the next steps. It would be a good idea for you to print these instructions, as you will not have access to the internet.

Important: If you have an always on connection to the internet, physically disconnect that connection until you are finished with Safe Mode and have rebooted back into normal mode. I suggest that you print out these instructions.
  • Restart your computer.
  • Continually tap the F8 button as your computer is booting (a menu appears).
  • Use up-arrow key to select Safe Mode and press Enter.
------------------------------------------------

Run AVG Anti-Spyware:

Close all open windows and then start AVG Anti-Spyware, which you downloaded earlier
  • Click on Scanner on the toolbar.
  • Click on Complete System Scan to start the scan process.
  • Let the program scan your computer.
  • When the scan has finished, follow the instructions below:
    • Make sure that Set all elements to: shows Quarantine
    • Important: Click on the Apply all Actions button (*** This must done before saving the report ***)
    • When the program has finished, it will display the message All actions have been applied.
    • Then click the Save Scan Report button.
    • Click the Save Report as button.
    • Save the report to your Desktop.
  • Right-click the AVG Tray Icon and select Exit.
-----------------------------------------------------------------

Reboot in Normal Mode.

-------------------------------------------

Please post, as a reply to this thread:
  • The AVG Anti-Spyware report
  • A new HijackThis log
Please let me know whether you are still getting the second browser window.

It looks as if we've done it! :)

You can delete OTMoveIt and the folder C:\_OTMoveIt\. I suggest that you keep ATF Cleaner and run it on a regular basis.

I said that I would make some recommendations regarding a firewall. Windows XP Firewall is better than nothing, but it only protects against incoming traffic. It doesn't protect you against outgoing baddies trying to "phone home". I strongly suggest that you use one of the third-party ones. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a firewall in its default configuration can greatly lower your risk.

The following are good and have a free version for personal use:
------------------------------------------------

Update Java Runtime:

You are using an old version of Java. Sun's Java is sometimes updated in order to eliminate the exploitation of vulnerabilities in an existing version. For this reason, it's extremely important that you keep the program up to date, and also remove the older more vulnerable versions from your system. The most current version of Sun Java is: Java Runtime Environment Version 6 Update 3.
  • Go to http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp
  • Click on the link named Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 3
  • Click on the radio button to Accept License Agreement
  • Click on Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language and save the downloaded file to your hard disk
  • Go to Start => Control Panel => Add or Remove Programs
  • Uninstall all old versions of Java (Java 2 Runtime Environment, JRE or JSE)
  • Reboot your computer
  • Install the new version by running the newly-downloaded file, and follow the on-screen instructions.
  • Reboot your computer
------------------------------------------------

Flush System Restore

We need to 'flush' your System Restore points and create a new clean one.

Turn OFF System Restore.
  • Click on Start
  • Right-click My Computer
  • Click Properties
  • Click the System Restore tab
  • Check Turn off System Restore
  • Click Apply, and then click OK
Restart your computer

Turn ON System Restore.
  • Click on Start
  • Right-click My Computer
  • Click Properties
  • Click the System Restore tab
  • Uncheck Turn off System Restore
  • Click Apply, and then click OK
----------------------------------------------

If you do not already use it, I suggest that you install SpywareBlaster. This program will:
  • Prevent the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted software.
  • Block spyware/tracking cookies in Internet Explorer and Mozilla/Firefox.
  • Restrict the actions of potentially unwanted sites in Internet Explorer.
This program blocks these items but does not run in the background. It therefore does not use any resources.

-------------------------------------------

This article, How to prevent Malware by miekiemoes, gives some very good advice.

Please let me know whether you have any questions.
