Hi jtmathia. :)

I noticed that Quicktime has stopped appearing at start up. Did you disable it? The AWF report looks fine.

Let's have another full system scan.

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan. Please use Internet Explorer as it uses ActiveX.

  1. Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner button.
  2. Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  3. It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an ActiveX from Kaspersky. Click Yes.
  4. When the downloads have finished, click on Next button.
  5. Click on Scan Settings button.
  6. Select extended under Scan using the following antivirus database:
  7. Check (tick) these boxes under Scan options:
    • Scan Archives
    • Scan Mail Bases
  8. Click OK
  9. Click on My Computer under Please select a target to scan:
  10. Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected. Click on Save as text button and save it to your desktop.
  11. Copy and paste this log in your next reply.

In your next reply, please post back:

  1. Kaspersky Antivirus scan report
  2. A new HijackThis log

Hi again,

No, I have not disabled QuickTime, really not sure how that got changed. If it was starting before it must of been starting in the background because I never noticed it. Attached it the kaspersky log/latest hijack this log. Also during the kaspersky scan I got the familiar mcafee virus pop-up "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe\QTTASK.EXE" :(

Hi jtmathia,

Did McAfee remove or quarantine the files?

No, unfortunately McAfee says it is unable to clean this file. The exact message that appears is the following:

Access to file was denied

Virus name:
Downloader-BEW

Infected file name:
C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe\QTTASK.EXE

VirusScan suggests
This infected file cannot be deleted. You should delete the file and replace it with a clean copy. Your data will not be affected.

Hi jtmathia,

That's weird.

Let's see a new Uninstall list.

  1. Open HijackThis.
  2. Click on the Open the Misc Tools section button.
  3. Look under System tools.
  4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager... button.
  5. Click on the Save list... button.
  6. It will prompt you to save. Save this log in a convenient location. By default it's named uninstall_list.txt.
  7. Notepad will open. Please post this log in your next reply.
____________________

Please open Notepad and copy and paste the following in the Code box into Notepad:

Code: Select all
regedit /e C:\look.txt "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\shared tools\msconfig\startupreg"
regedit /e C:\look1.txt "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\shared tools\msconfig\startupfolder"
type C:\look*.txt >> C:\results.txt
start notepad C:\results.txt
del /q C:\look*.txt

Click on File > Save As....

In the File Name box, copy and paste in msconfig.bat

In the Save As Type box, select All Files.

Click Save.

Double click on msconfig.bat to run it. Command Prompt will open and close quickly; this is normal. Notepad will open shortly afterwards, please post the contents of this Notepad file in your next reply.

In your next reply, please post:

  1. The Uninstall list
  2. Contents of the Notepad file (C:\results.txt)
  3. A new HijackThis log

Hi jtmathia,

The logs don't show much.

  1. Open My Computer.
  2. Go to Tools > Folder Options.
  3. Select the View tab.
  4. Scroll down to Hidden files and folders.
  5. Select Show hidden files and folders.
  6. Uncheck (untick) Hide extensions of known file types.
  7. Uncheck (untick) Hide protected operating system files (Recommended).
  8. Click Yes when prompted.
  9. Click OK.

Navigate to C:\Program Files\QuickTime.

Do you see a bak in there?

Hi jtmathia,

It has come to my attention that you have posted for help with your computer at other forums.

Here's your other topic: http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?p=1058392

May I draw your attention to the Forum Guidelines on Multi-Posting.

Due to multi-posting, it has now caused problems. This particular infection (Downloader BEW) makes backup copies of your files before replacing with a malicious one. Your backup copy of files have been deleted and are no longer recoverable.

You have to uninstall and reinstall Quicktime.

To do so, please follow the following steps:

  1. Click on Start > Control Panel and double click on Add/Remove Programs.
  2. Locate Quicktime and click on Change/Remove to uninstall it.
  3. Close Add/Remove Programs and Control Panel.
  4. Restart your computer.
  5. Go to Apple's site and download a new copy of Quicktime. Select the QuickTime 7.3 for Windows XP or Vista option as you already have iTunes.
  6. Click on Download.
  7. Double click to run the installation.
  8. Restart your PC when the installation is done.

Lastly,

Double click on FindAWF.exe to run it. Press any key to continue, followed by pressing the number 1 and pressing Enter.

A report will be produced once it's done. Please post this report as well as a new HijackThis log in your next reply.

Note: Do not select other options until you are told to do so.

Please post back the contents of the FindAWF report in your next reply.

AUOptions is disabled.
UpdatesDisableNotify is set.

Any particular reason(s) why you disabled Windows Automatic Updates?

In your next reply, please post:

  1. FindAWF report
  2. A new HijackThis log
  3. Reason(s) for disabling Windows Automatic Updates

3) Reason(s) for disabling Windows Automatic Updates
I prefer to just manually go to the update site and get critical updates myself to avoid the extra popups, downloads disrupting my other work.

Hi jtmathia. :)

AWF report looks good.

Delete this folder.

C:\Program Files\YAHOO!\MESSENGER\BAK

In your next reply, please post:

  1. Kaspersky Antivirus scan report

Re: Downloader-BEW problem, hijack this log

Unread postby jtmathia » November 11th, 2007, 3:58 pm

Hi,

Here are the latest logs. Also during the kaspersky run I got a new McAfee virus warning. Again it stated it was unable to clean and the infected file name was C:\System Volume Information\_restore{74BE5C0E-1695-4E43-9338-56A55B8841BE}\RP498\A0139422.exe\A0139422.EXE

Virus name was again Downloader-BEW

Unread postby ndmmxiaomayi » November 11th, 2007, 11:50 pm

Hi jtmathia. :)

McAfee detected an infected system restore point, which we would clear in a while.

Please delete FindAWF.exe and DSS.exe.

Hide system files

  1. Open My Computer.
  2. Go to Tools > Folder Options.
  3. Select the View tab.
  4. Scroll down to Hidden files and folders.
  5. Select Do not show hidden files and folders.
  6. Check (tick) Hide extensions of known file types.
  7. Check (untick) Hide protected operating system files (Recommended).
  8. Click OK.
  9. Close My Computer.

Flush the system restore points

  1. Right click on My Computer and select Properties.
  2. Select the System Restore tab.
  3. Check (tick) Turn off system restore on all drives box.
  4. Click OK.
  5. Restart your computer.

After restarting your computer, follow these steps:

  1. Right click on My Computer and select Properties.
  2. Select the System Restore tab.
  3. Uncheck (untick) Turn off system restore on all drives box.
  4. Click OK.
  5. Restart your computer.

Note: Do this only ONCE, don't flush it regularly.

Keep your system updated

Microsoft releases patches for Windows and Office products regularly to patch up Windows and Office products loopholes and fix any bugs found. Please ensure that you visit the following websites regularly or do update your system regularly.

Install the updates immediately if they are found. Reboot your computer if necessary, revisit Windows Update and Office update sites until there are no more updates to be installed.

To update Windows

Go to Start > All Programs > Windows Update

To update Office

Open up any Office program.

Go to Help > Check for Updates

Alternatively, you can visit the links below to update Windows and Office products.

Windows Update
Office Update

If you are forgetful, you can change some settings so that you will be informed of updates. Here's how:

  1. Go to Start > Control Panel > Automatic Updates
  2. Select Automatic (recommended) radio button if you want the updates to be downloaded and installed without prompting you.
  3. Select Download updates for me, but let me chose when to install them radio button if you want the updates to be downloaded automatically but to be installed at another time.
  4. Select Notify me but don't automatically download or install them radio button if you want to be notified of the updates.

Besides Windows that need regular updating, antivirus, anti-spyware and firewall programs update regularly too.

Please make sure that you update your antivirus, firewall and anti-spyware programs at least once a week.

Be careful when opening attachments and downloading files.

  1. Never open email attachments, not even if they are from someone you know. If you need to open them, scan them with your antivirus program before opening.
  2. Never open emails from unknown senders.
  3. Beware of emails that warn about viruses that are spreading, especially those from antivirus vendors. These email addresses can be easily spoofed. Check the antivirus vendor websites to be sure.
  4. Be careful of what you download. Only download files from known sources. Also, avoid cracked programs. If you need a particular program that costs too much for you, try finding free alternatives on Sourceforge or Pricelessware.

Stop malicious scripts

Windows by default allow scripts (which is VBScript and JavaScript) to run and some of these scripts are malicious. Use Noscript by Symantec or Script Defender by AnalogX to handle these scripts.

Backup regularly

You never know when your PC will become unstable or become so infected that you can't recover it. Follow this Microsoft article to learn how to backup. Follow this article by Microsoft to restore your backups.

Alternatively, you can use 3rd-party programs to back up your data. One example can be found at Bleeping Computer.

Make your Internet Explorer safer

For Internet Explorer 7

Please read this article to configure Internet Explorer 7 properly.

Avoid P2P

P2P may be a great way to get lots of stuffs, but it is a great way to get infected as well. There's no way to tell if the file being shared is infected. Worse still, some worms spread via P2P networks, infecting you as well. If you do need to use them, use them sparingly. Check this list of clean and infected P2P programs if you need to use one.

Prevent a re-infection

  1. Spyware Blaster
SpywareBlaster is a program that is used to secure Internet Explorer by making it harder for ActiveX programs to run on your computer. It does this by disabling known offending ActiveX programs from running at all.

You can download SpywareBlaster from Javacool.

If you need help in using SpywareBlaster, you can read SpywareBlaster's tutorial at Bleeping Computer.
  2. SpywareGuard
Just as an antivirus program scans a file for viruses before opening it, SpywareGuard does the same thing, except that it scans it for spywares.

You can download SpywareGuard from Javacool.

If you need help in using SpywareGuard, you can SpywareGuard's tutorial at Bleeping Computer.
  3. IE-SPYAD
IE-SPYAD adds over 5000 sites to your Internet Explorer restricted zone so that you will be protected if the website turns out to be a bad one. Sites that are in the restricted zone of Internet Explorer can't have any scripts ran, no downloads and cookies. However, you can still connect to these sites.

You can download IE-SPYAD from Spyware Warrior. Be sure to read the whole website carefully for instructions on usage of IE-SPYAD.

A tutorial for IE-SPYAD can be found at Bleeping Computer.
  4. Hosts File
A Hosts file is like a phone book. You look up someone's name in the phone book before calling him/her. Similarly, your PC will look up the website's IP address before you can view the website.

Hosts file will replace your current Hosts file with another one containing well-known advertisement sites, spyware sites and other bad sites. This new Hosts file will protect you by re-directing these bad sites to 127.0.0.1.

    Here are some Hosts files:

    MVPS Hosts File
    Bluetack's Hosts File
    Bluetack's Host Manager
    hpHosts

A tutorial about Hosts File can be found at Malware Removal.
  5. a-squared Free
a-squared Free is also another program for scanning spywares and adwares. It doesn't have preventive features like Spybot Search & Destroy though.

You can download a-squared Free from here.
  6. CounterSpy
CounterSpy is pretty much like Spybot Search & Destroy, but it isn't free. You can try CounterSpy for 15 days.

Before downloading any anti-spyware programs, always check the Rogue/Suspect list of anti-spyware programs. This will save you from a lot of trouble. If in doubt, don't ever download it.
  7. SiteHound Toolbar
SiteHound is a toolbar that warns you if you go to a site that is known to scam people, that has potentially lots of viruses or spywares or has questionable contents. If you know the site, you can enter it; if you don't, it will bring you back to the previous page. Currently, SiteHound works for Internet Explorer and Firefox only.
  8. Winpatrol
Winpatrol is heuristic protection program, meaning it looks for patterns in codes that work like malware. It also takes a snapshot of your system's critical resources and alerts you to any changes that may occur without you knowing. You can read more about Winpatrol's features here.

You can get a free copy of Winpatrol or use the Plus version for more features.

You can read Winpatrol's FAQ if you run into problems.

Use an alternative Internet Browser

Many of the exploits are directed to users of Internet Explorer. Try using a different browser instead.

Firefox
Opera
K-Meleon

Use an alternative email client

If you are using Outlook Express as your default email client, try using Thunderbird or Pegasus Mail instead.
