Help with some nasty stuff

Unread postby notrespass » October 1st, 2007, 1:36 pm

Hello-

I recently fell victim to both the vundo trojan and the garbage spytech keylogger. I hope I have removed them, but I am not overwhelmingly savvy so I am hoping that someone can take a look at my HijackThis log and let me know if you see anything awful lingering about, and how to fix it.

Bless you people. Thanks for the help.

Hi notrespass,

I need to see another log from HijackThis.
  • Run Hijackthis.
  • Click on Open the Misc Tools section.
  • Next click on Open uninstall manager.
  • Press the Save list button.
  • Save the file to your desktop, with the default name of uninstall_list
  • Copy & Paste the entire contents of that file in your in your next post.

I see you have McAfee. Does that have a Firewall or is just an Anti-Virus? I know you have Zone Alarm.

Sorry, didn't answer your other question. It is just the anti-virus. I am not wedded to McAfee either, if you think it's better to get rid of it in favor of one of the free anti-virus programs I'm considering doing that anyway.

Hi notrespass,

Sorry, didn't answer your other question. It is just the anti-virus. I am not wedded to McAfee either, if you think it's better to get rid of it in favor of one of the free anti-virus programs I'm considering doing that anyway.

Personally, I would use a free anti-virus program. Lets deal with this at the end.

Please do the following...

1. You have several P2P filesharing program installed.
  • Many of these programs come with unwanted components bundled with them.
  • If you wish to find out whether the one you're using does click here.
Please note: Even if you are using a "safe" P2P program, it is only the program that is safe. You will be sharing files from uncertified sources, and these are often infected. The bad guys use P2P filesharing as a major conduit to spread their wares.

I recommend you uninstall all forms of P2P programs via Add/Remove programs in Control Panel.

Please note: you must NOT use this whilst we are cleaning your machine.

2. Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update to the latest version...

Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 update3.
  • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications."
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement."
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove the following...
    • J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 1
    • J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u3-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.
3. Click Start > Run > type in appwiz.cpl and hit enter. From the list uninstall the following, if present:

BitTorrent 5.0.8 <-- see 1. above
DC++ 0.699 <-- see 1. above
screensaver2004 <-- If you don't know what this is, remove it.

4. Open HijackThis
- Click the Do a system scan only button
- Check the following entries (below)

O2 - BHO: IexploreOmea - {09628AAA-66AD-4FA2-82E2-698185B66463} - (no file)

- Close ALL open windows (especially Internet Explorer!)
- Click Fix Checked
Close HiajckThis

5. Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner

Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.

Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the licence, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license accepted, reset to 100%.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
      Scan Archives
      Scan Mail Bases

  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:
      Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
    • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.

6. Please post the following...

Hi notrespass,

Please do the following...

1. Click Start > Control Panel > open: Java
  • Under the General tab, click on Settings
  • In the new window, click on Delete Files
  • In the new window, ensure both boxes are checked and click OK
  • Click OK, and OK again to close the Java Control Panel
2. Find and delete the following File in RED:

C:\Program Files\Qualcomm\Eudora\attach\SPAM Level=7.5 Pleas.htm

3. Restart the computer and post a new HijackThis log. In notepad, make sure Word Wrap is unchecked under the Format tab.

Hi notrespass,

The HijackThis log is clean. How is the computer?

Regarding McAfee: Would you like to switch to a free version?

The computer is still slow starting up and shutting down, but I think I just need to reformat (it's been a while). Other than that, it's considerably less buggy, and I'm very happy to know that I'm safer than I was.

Thank you again for your help, it is amazing to find a great service like this for free. When malicious programmers and online criminals make me feel cynical about humanity, I'll try to remember that there is a counterbalance of folks who give their time at no direct personal gain to help solve the problems they cause.

Regarding the anti-virus, yes, I'd like to switch to something free. I am not particularly happy with McAfee, and if the free services are just as good or better I may as well save the cash. If you have the time to help me out or point me in the right direction, I would be further in your debt.

Thanks again for your time and your help.

OK, lets remove McAfee.

1. Uninstall the following from Add/Remove programs...

McAfee SecurityCenter

2. Download and run the McAfee Consumer Product Removal to remove any McAfee remnents.

3. Please download one Anti-Virus from the list below - They are Free!

AntiVir << I recommend this
AVG Free Edition
avast! 4 Home Edition

Let me know how it goes.
