Hi jkoiler

I'm Elrond and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

As an introduction, please note that I am not Superhuman, I do not know everything, but what I do know has taken me years to learn. I am happy to pass on this information to you, but please bear in mind that I am also fallible.

Please only use this topic for your replies on this problem. Do not start another thread.
Please note that the fixes we will use are specific to your problems on this computer and should only be used for this problem on this computer.
These things need to be properly researched and a complete fix for many malware problems can take some time and be spread over a number of posts, so please be patient and try to see it through to the end.

Before we start: Please be aware that removing Malware is a hazardous undertaking. I will take care not to knowingly suggest courses of action that might damage your computer. However it is impossible for me to foresee all interactions that may happen between the software on your computer and those we'll use to clear you of infection, and I cannot guarantee the safety of your system. It is possible that we might encounter situations where the only recourse is to re-format and re-install your operating system, or to necessitate you taking your computer to a repair shop.

In light of this it would be wise for you to back up any files and folders that you don't want to lose before we start.

Please observe these rules while we work:
  • Perform all actions in the order given.
  • If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
  • Stick with it till you're given the all clear.
  • REMEMBER, ABSENCE OF SYMPTOMS DOES NOT MEAN THE INFECTION IS ALL GONE.
If you can do these things, everything should go smoothly.
  • Please note that you should have Administrator rights to perform the fixes. (XP accounts are Administrator by default) Also note that multiple identity PC’s (family PC’s) present a different problem; please tell me if your PC has more than one individual’s setting, but continue with the fix. Please let me know if you are using a computer with multiple accounts, as this can affect the instructions given.
It may be helpful to you to print out or take a copy of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Please note that I will be off line for about 26 hours (sundown Friday until nightfall Saturday my local time) every week. This and next week I will also be off line Wendsday to Thursday the same hours.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I do not see any major problems in your log although there are some things that should be removed but I would like to see the following before I start any removal:

Open "HijackThis". Click on "Open Misc.Tool Section".
Use the scroll bar on the right and scroll down to "Open Uninstall Manager". Click it.
On the right you will find "Save List". Click it.
The log that you just saved will appear.
Use "Copy" and "Paste" to add it to your next post.

Go here to run an online scanner from Kaspersky.

  • Click on "Kaspersky Online Scanner"
  • A new smaller window will pop up. Press on "Accept". After reading the contents.
  • Now Kaspersky will update the anti-virus database. Let it run.
  • Click on "Next">"Scan Settings", and make sure the database is set to "extended". And check both the scan options. Then click OK.
  • Then click on "My Computer", and the scan will start.
  • Once finished, save the log as "KAV.txt" to the desktop.

Now please run a new HijackThis scan and post the log together with the logs from "Uninstall Manager" and Kaspersky in this topic. Also please let me know what are the problems that you see and that made you post for help. The more details you give me the better are the chances that I can quickly get rid of them.

Hi again jkoiler

Sorry for the delay but as I indicated I was off line for 25 hours.

Let's start getting your computer back in shape:

  1. You are using an older vulnerable version of Adobe Acrobat Reader 7.0.9. You have two choises:
    1. Please go here to download Adobe Acrobat Reader 8... http://www.adobe.com/uk/products/reader/. However Adobe 8 is a large program and there are some unpatched problems in the latest version which could lead to more security problems
    2. If you prefer a smaller program that so far is not known to have security problems you can get Foxit 2.0 instead from http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/rd_intro.php. However it does not integrate as well with the browsers as does Adobe Reader.
  2. Next
IMPORTANT I notice there are signs of one or more P2P (Person to Person) File Sharing Programs on your computer.

    LimeWire 4.12.6

I'd like you to read the Guidelines for P2P Programs where we explain why it's not a good idea to have them.

    Also available here.

My recommendation is you go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs
In Add or Remove Programs, highlight the program listed above (in red), click Remove.and uninstall .

  3. While you have the Add/Remove open I want you to remove the the following programs (in red below) as well by repeating the same procedure with each of them. Some of them are Adware programs and the rest are programs that are out of date and are security risks. (Adobe Reader which is discussed above and a number of old Java versions. You have the latest version installed but updating does not remove the older versions.)

    Adobe Reader 7.0.9
    Adssite Browser Optimizer
    Rightonadz Browser Optimizer
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 10
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 7
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 9
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_08
    Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1

  4. I see that Viewpoint is installed. Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player are Viewpoint components which are installed as a side effect of installing other software, most notably AOL and AOL Instant Messenger (AIM). Viewpoint Manager is responsible for managing and updating Viewpoint Media Player’s components. You can disable this using the Viewpoint Manager Control Panel found in the Windows Control Panel menu. By selecting Disable auto-updating for the Viewpoint Manager -- the player will no longer attempt to check for updates. Anything that is installed without your consent is suspect. Read what Viewpoint says and make your own decision.
To provide a satisfying consumer experience and to operate effectively, the Viewpoint Media Player periodically sends information to servers at Viewpoint. Each installation of the Viewpoint Media Player is identifiable to Viewpoint via a Customer Unique Identifier (CUID), an alphanumeric identifier embedded in the Viewpoint Media Player. The Viewpoint Media Player randomly generates the CUID during installation and uses it to indicate a unique installation of the product. A CUID is never connected to a user's name, email address, or other personal contact information. CUIDs are used for the sole purpose of filtering redundant information. Each of these information exchanges occurs anonymously.

Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without user's approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". This may change, read Viewpoint to Plunge Into Adware.
I recommend that you remove the Viewpoint products; however, decide for yourself. To uninstall the the Viewpoint components (Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player)follow the same procedure that you did above.
Once you have finnished removing programs close Add/Remove

  5. Restart the computer

  6. Run CCleaner
CCleaner will remove everything from the temp/temporary folders but please note that it will not make back ups!
    Download CCleaner Slim from http://www.ccleaner.com/download/builds ... ading-slim

    • Before first use, select Options > Advanced and UNCHECK Only delete files in Windows Temp folder older than 48 hours
    • Then select the items you wish to clean up.

      • In the Windows Tab:

        • Clean all entries in the Internet Explorer section except Cookies
        • Clean all the entries in the Windows Explorer section
        • Clean all entries in the System section
        • Clean all entries in the Advanced section
        • Clean any others that you choose
      • In the Applications Tab:

        • Clean all except cookies in the Firefox/Mozilla section if you use it
        • Clean all except cookies in the Opera section if you use it
        • Clean Sun Java in the Internet Section
        • Clean any others that you choose
    • Click the Run Cleaner button.
    • A pop up box will appear advising this process will permanently delete files from your system.
    • Click OK and it will scan and clean your system.
    • Click exit when done.
    • If it asks you to reboot at the end, click NO

CCleaner should be run with the above settings for each User Account!

  7. Fix With HJT
Close all other windows and then start HiJack This
Click Do A System Scan Only
When it has finished scanning put a check next to the following lines if they are there.
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {4D25F921-B9FE-4682-BF72-8AB8210D6D75} - C:\Program Files\MyWaySA\SrchAsDe\deSrcAs.dll
    O2 - BHO: rightonadz browser optimizer - {971C3384-F75E-4562-95B3-CBE7417529BC} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\gzmrotate.dll
    O2 - BHO: adssite - {F31B3634-12AA-41ca-B021-0685C3B3E4CA} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\nsn18F.dll

    O24 - Desktop Component 0: (no name) - file:///C:/DOCUME~1/JONOIL~1/LOCALS~1/Temp/msohtml1/01/clip_image002.jpg

    - Close ALL open windows (especially Internet Explorer!)-
    Now click Fix checked

  8. Set up AVG Anti-Spyware:

Download the trial version of AVG Anti-Spyware from here and install it. When the program has been installed, and you click the Finish button, AVG Anti-Spyware will open. Do not run a scan yet.

If the program does not automatically update itself during installation, or you are unsure whether it has done so, please do the following:
    • Click the Update icon at the top and under Manual Update click the Start update button.
    • The program will either update or inform you that no update was available.
    • It is essential that you get the update - keep trying until successful.
You will need to change the following settings:
    • Click the Shield icon at the top and under Resident shield is... click active. This should now change to inactive.
    • Click the Update icon and untick the automatic update option.
    • Click on Scanner on the toolbar.
    • Click on the Settings tab.
      • Under How to act? - make sure that Quarantine is selected.
      • Under How to scan? - All checkboxes should be ticked.
      • Under Possibly unwanted software - All checkboxes should be ticked.
      • Under Reports - Select Do not automatically generate reports.
      • Under What to scan? - Select Scan every file.
You can now close AVG Anti-Spyware. Do not scan yet.

  9. Run AVG Anti-Spyware:

Close all open windows and then start AVG Anti-Spyware, which you downloaded earlier
    • Click on Scanner on the toolbar.
    • Click on Complete System Scan to start the scan process.
    • Let the program scan your computer.
    • When the scan has finished, follow the instructions below:
      • Make sure that Set all elements to: shows Quarantine
      • Important: Click on the Apply all Actions button (*** This must done before saving the report ***)
      • When the program has finished, it will display the message All actions have been applied.
      • Then click the Save Scan Report button.
      • Click the Save Report as button.
      • Save the report to your Desktop.
    • Right-click the AVG Tray Icon and select Exit.

  10. Go here to run an online scannner from Kaspersky.

  11. Run a new HijackThis scan and

Post the following:
The AVG Antispyware log
The Kaspersky log
The HijackThis log
Tell me any changes in the behaviour of your computer.

There is a risk that the background of your desktop will change.
