Hijack This Assistance/Malware?

Unread postby curt_92505 » September 9th, 2007, 6:34 pm

Please assist with the hijackthis scan.
I am currently having a problem with a redirect (typing in google.com and being redirected to a citysearch page). I tried doing a webroot spy sweep and it doesn't help. I have also ran my antivirus and that doesn't seem to be working either. Not to mention my computer seems to be running sluggish nowadays.
Any help will be much appreciated.
Big thanks in advance.

Hi curt_92505,

Your HijackThis log looks clean of malware, and I can't see anything that could explain the redirecting problem you are reporting.

When you say that your antivirus program "doesn't seem to be working" - do you mean it didn't resolve the problem or it isn't working at all?

We can scan with another program to have a closer look:
Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS)
  • Close all applications and windows.
  • Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  • When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt<-this one will be minimized
  • Make sure Format->Word Wrap is unchecked
  • Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your reply

Once complete, please post both DSS logs, you won't need to produce a new HijackThis log as DSS produces one for you.

Reports requested

Unread postby curt_92505 » September 17th, 2007, 10:30 pm

Thanks for your help.
The anti-virus and spyware is functionally working, just not finding the problem. Here are the reports requested (note...I didn't see anywhere I could request the format for no WordWrap as the program went right to work...my apologizes if it is in WordWrap around. If it is wrong, just let me know and I will fix it for you).

Thanks again in advance.

Hi curt_92505,

The logs you posted look fine. When you have Notepad open, select Format from the top menu, you should see an option called Word Wrap - this can be checked or un-checked - it's best to make sure it's un-checked when posting logs so that they are formatted correctly.

Please open Start->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs, look down the list for this and remove it:
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_05
This is out of date and is now a security risk, you can get the latest update (version 6 update 2) from here

You have LimeWire, a P2P file sharing program installed on your computer. This program does not come bundled with malware as some similar programs do, but peer-to-peer file sharing networks are one of the biggest sources of malware we see. Anything downloaded from them cannot be trusted to be clean, because even if the file appears to be what it claims to be, it can have malware embedded in it.
I recommend you remove it, but of course the choice is yours.
You can remove Limewire via Add/Remove Programs.

You have Viewpoint Media Player installed on your system. This program is not malware but it is foistware in that it is usually installed without the user's knowledge or approval, and for this reason I recommend you remove it. If you actually use this program, I recommend you try using safe and free alternatives such as VLC Player or Media Player Classic.
You can remove Viewpoint Media Player via Add/Remove Programs.

You have a program called SpyNoMore installed on your computer. This program was until recently classified as a Rogue antispyware program. Typically, rogue programs do not provide any security benefits, and use false positives to goad users into purchasing a full version of the program. Due to the tainted history of this program, and the fact that there are very good alternatives available for free, I strongly suggest you remove it.
You can remove SpyNoMore 2.66 via Add/Remove Programs.

Then, open HijackThis, choose Do a system scan only and place a checkmark next to the following line:
R3 - URLSearchHook: Yahoo! Toolbar - {EF99BD32-C1FB-11D2-892F-0090271D4F88} - (no file)

Then close all open windows apart from HijackThis, press Fix checked, OK the prompt and close HijackThis.

Next, please do an online scan with Kaspersky:

Open Kaspersky Online Scanner in Internet Explorer

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky,
Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT and then Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
      Scan Archives
      Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:
      Select My Computer
  • The program will start to scan your system.
  • Once the scan is complete, click on the Save as Text button and save the file to your desktop
Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license is accepted, reset to 100%.

Then download F-Secure Blacklight
  • Click I ACCEPT and download the graphical user interface version to your Desktop
  • Double click the file to run it, choose I accept the agreement then press Scan
  • It will create the fsbl-xxxxxxx.log on your desktop containing a list of all items found.
  • Do not choose to rename any because legitimate items can also be present.
  • Exit Blacklight and post the contents of the log in your next reply.

Once complete, please post the Kaspersky log, the Blacklight log and a new HijackThis log.

Hi curt_92505,

That looks pretty good, just a little tidying up:

It looks like you have removed SpyNoMore, if so then open HijackThis, choose Do a system scan only and place a checkmark next to the following line:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SNM] "C:\Program Files\SpyNoMore\SNM.exe" /startup

Then close all open windows apart from HijackThis, press Fix checked, OK the prompt and close HijackThis.

Make hidden/system files and folders visible:
Click Start -> My Computer
Select the Tools menu, click Folder Options and select the View tab
Under the Hidden files and folders heading SELECT Show hidden files and folders
UNCHECK the Hide extensions for known file types option
UNCHECK the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option
Click Yes to confirm and press OK

Use Windows Explorer (right-click Start, select Explore) to find and delete the following folder:
C:\Documents and Settings\Curtiss\.housecall6.6\Quarantine

If you have trouble deleting it, please let me know in your next response.

Please also empty your Norton antivirus quarantine area and your recycle bin - if you need help doing this please let me know.

Once complete, please post a new HijackThis log and let me know how your computer is running.

I am still having the redirect problem, but only when I type Google's address in the address bar (http://www.google.com). My home page is http://www.google.com, so when I select my home page from the Explorer tool bar button, I get Google. When I type out http://www.google.com in the address tool bar, it redirects me to:
http://losangeles.citysearch.com/profile/11548029

The computer is still booting up slow. I don't know if it has to do with the Spy Sweeper and Norton scans.
Also, when I turn off the computer, the computer is a wee bit slow shutting down. I get a windows box telling me that some program is not closing that I am not familiar with. It doesn't stay up too long. Let me know if you need the name of the program. I will get the name written down.
Here is the new HijackThis log:
