McAfee was disabled

Unread postby HelpMeMrWizard » August 15th, 2007, 6:39 am

I turned the computer on this morning and McAfee was complaining it was disabled. I checked it's events, it was disabled just 7 minutes eariler. I reenabled it and started a scan (it's still running). I downloaded the new HijackThis and ran it.

Hi HelpMeMrWizard,

I can't yet say whether the problems you are experiencing are caused by malware, if they are we will get to the bottom of it, if not then I'll advise you on getting further help.

Please tell me if you are experiencing any symptoms other than McAfee being disabled, whether this happened just the once or happens every boot, and let me know the results of the scan you ran.

You should also check whether your McAfee license still current and whether it's definitions are fully up to date.

Then, open HijackThis, choose Do a system scan only and place a checkmark next to the following lines (if present):
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)
O16 - DPF: {DF780F87-FF2B-4DF8-92D0-73DB16A1543A} (PopCapLoader Object) - http://www.gamehouse.com/realarcade-web ... loader.cab

Then close all open windows apart from HijackThis, press Fix checked, OK the prompt and close HijackThis.

Now open HijackThis, select Open the Misc Tools section
Press the Open Uninstall Manager... button, then press Save list...
Save the Uninstall log to your deskop and include a copy in your next response.
Now press Back and Scan and then Save log to create and save a new HijackThis log.

Once complete, please post the uninstall list along with a new HijackThis log and let me know the answers to the questions at the top of this post.

Thanks for the help.

McAfee was only disabled the one time and it hasn't happened again.

The scan removed 8 cookies and 2 programs, the programs were, Adware-SaveNow and Proxy-OSS.

McAfee is annoyingly up to date, it updates itself everyday or twice a day and pops up in front of anything at any time (there I got that out of my system, sorry).

Nope, no other problems I have noticed,no yellow triangle, no popups. I was wondering about OneStep Search, I didn't install it but I'm not the only one using this computer.

I was having a problem with "Com Surrogate" crashing, I uninstalled "URGE". That seemed to fix that problem.

Well, here's the logs you requested, thanks again for the help. Let me know what else to do (if anything).

Hi HelpMeMrWizard,

That all sounds good however I think we should do a further scan to double-check the findings, but first there are some programs I recommend you remove:

Please open Start->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs, look down the list for these items and remove them:
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1
OneStep Search 1.0 build 120
Themexp.org File

You have the latest Java installed (version 6 update 2) and this older version is unnecessary and is a security risk.
The other two programs have both been reported as undesirable.

Next click Start->Run and type cleanmgr in the box and press OK
Ensure the boxes for Recycle Bin, Temporary Files and Temporary Internet Files are checked, you can choose to check other boxes if you wish but they are not required.
Press OK and Yes to confirm

Then please do an online scan with Kaspersky:

Open Kaspersky Online Scanner in Internet Explorer

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky,
Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT and then Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
      Scan Archives
      Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:
      Select My Computer
  • The program will start to scan your system.
  • Once the scan is complete, click on the Save as Text button and save the file to your desktop
Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license is accepted, reset to 100%.

Once complete, please post the Kaspersky report and a new HijackThis log.

Hi HelpMeMrWizard,

Make hidden/system files and folders visible:
Click Start -> My Computer
Select the Tools menu, click Folder Options and select the View tab
Under the Hidden files and folders heading SELECT Show hidden files and folders
UNCHECK the Hide extensions for known file types option
UNCHECK the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option
Click Yes to confirm and press OK

Use Windows Explorer to find and delete the following files:
C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\My Documents\My Pictures\Wallpaper\180043.exe
C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\My Documents\My Pictures\Wallpaper\180063.exe
C:\WINDOWS\Temp\ONE10.tmp\upgrade.exe

If you have trouble deleting any of these, please let me know in your next response.

Re-hide hidden/system files and folders:
Click Start -> My Computer
Select the Tools menu, click Folder Options and select the View tab
Under the Hidden files and folders heading SELECT Do not show hidden files and folders
CHECK the Hide extensions for known file types option
CHECK the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option
Press OK

Assuming that goes OK, things look pretty good - have you experienced any further issues?

The files deleted nicely. Is there anything wrong with leaving the file extensions unhidden?

It is very gratifing to know that in a world where people will attempt to use someone elses computer to there own ends, that there are also people out there such as yourself and your compatriots who are willing to give of themselves and spend time to help the less knowledgable. Thank you.

Hi HelpMeMrWizard,

You are most welcome and thank you for your kind words :)

Here are some tips to help you keep your computer clean:

Operating system vulnerabilities can easily be exploited by malware so please ensure your operating system is automatically kept up to date by using Windows Update:
Go to Start->Control Panel->Automatic Updates
Select Automatic and select a suitable schedule
Also, check that your antivirus and antispyware programs are set to automatically update daily.

You have a good antivirus suite installed, however I recommend you also install specialist antispyware software with real-time capabilities - this will protect you from a wider range of malware and also that it will protect you from system changes and spyware while you are working, not just removing malware after it has been installed. There are a range of paid-for and free packages available, a free one I can recommend is Windows Defender, available here:
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/securit ... fault.mspx

Spywareblaster is a free program which prevents the download and installation of Internet Explorer ActiveX based malware by immunizing your system against it. You can download Spywareblaster from here and a tutorial to help you get started is available here.

Consider a custom hosts file such as MVPS HOSTS. This custom hosts file effectively blocks a wide range of unwanted ads, banners, 3rd party Cookies, 3rd party page counters, web bugs, and many hijackers.
For information on how to download and install, please read this tutorial by WinHelp2002
Note: Be sure to follow the instructions to disable the DNS Client service before installing a custom hosts file.

Please take care when downloading programs. One of the easiest ways to be infected is to download freeware/shareware programs which come laden with malware - this includes allowing websites to install browser plug-ins orActiveX controls. Before downloading, it is crucial to check whether the source is reputable.
One way to check is to use McAfee SiteAdvisor. Copy the domain name into the space provided and SiteAdvisor will give you a report on the website which can help you decide if it is safe. They also have a toolbar for IE and Firefox which adds this functionality to your browser.

Find out more about how to prevent infection in the future

Please post back to let me know that you have read this, and if there are any further issues.
