Hi.

There's a few things we need to sort out in your HijackThis log but I can't see any obvious sign of infection. Could you please give me some more details about how Outlook Express is "behaving strangely".

Hi Beynac,
Thanks for replying to my post,
I will try & explain the problem, my broadband/webmail provider is talktalk.net. I have 2 e mail accounts but I can only access one fully, if I try to set up the second account in express, I am requested to supply the password to access my inbox. This fails and I recieve an error msg. from talktalk. I have tried to talk to them but with little success. A techie was supposed to contact me but never did. Another thing that is happening is that my internet connection will drop out for no reason and if I run the talktalk diagnostics it informs me that the "TCP STACK" is out of sync (or some such) but they are able to get me up and running again very quickly. I hope this helps cos. I am going slightly mad.

Thanks for that information. It doesn't sound as if this is a malware-related problem and isn't within my area of expertise. I suggest that you register at Castlecops and post to their Internet Connectivity forum. I'm sorry that I can't help with this.

There are a couple of things we need to tidy up on your HijackThis log, though.

Run HijackThis and click Scan and then check (tick) the following, if present (don't worry if any are missing):

Close down all programs, browsers and other open windows. Make sure that only the above items are checked and then click on Fix checked.

Update Java Runtime:

You are using an old version of Java. Sun's Java is sometimes updated in order to eliminate the exploitation of vulnerabilities in an existing version. For this reason, it's extremely important that you keep the program up to date, and also remove the older more vulnerable versions from your system. The most current version of Sun Java is: Java Runtime Environment Version 6u2.
  • Go to http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp
  • Click on the link named Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u2
  • Click on the radio button to Accept License Agreement
  • Click on Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language and save the downloaded file to your hard disk
  • Go to Start => Control Panel => Add or Remove Programs
  • Uninstall all old versions of Java (Java 2 Runtime Environment, JRE or JSE)
  • Reboot your computer
  • Delete the folder C:\Program Files\Java if present
  • Install the new version by running the newly-downloaded file, and follow the on-screen instructions.
  • Reboot your computer

Thanks Beynac, I have done everything and I will certainly contact Castlecops. Just one question to finish, should I do a regular scan & submit the results with HJT or only run it if I notice odd behaviour?

You only need to run HijackThis, and post the log here, if you suspect that the computer has been infected. However, you are welcome to submit a log for an occasional check-up.

You should, of course, run regular scans with your anti-virus and anti-spyware software.
