I'm getting warning messages from PC-Cillen regarding dangerous web pages, have run Spy Bot, A-squared, Vundo Fix, as well as a couple on-line scans, but nothing seems to solve the underlying problem, whatever it is. PC-Cillen had at one point detected Troj_dloader.ewr in my temporary internet folder but after deleting temporary internet files, it is not showing up in PC-Cillen's virus scan now. Any help that could be sent my way would be greatly appreciated!

Hello mpenna...welcome to Malware Removal! Sorry for the delay in responding, we are quite busy!

I'm not seeing much in the HJT log except for the following:

Code: Select all
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {F99BF145-86E9-4DDC-8BCA-D05843AE83CC} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\awtqn.dll (file missing)

This is an old Vundo remnant that we'll remove shortly

Code: Select all
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {BA52B914-B692-46c4-B683-905236F6F655} - (no file)

A McAfee toolbar remnant...was McAfee previously installed? The file is 'missing'.

Code: Select all
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [horyfyne] C:\Program Files\ComPlus Applications\horyfyne22011.exe

I can find no information about this entry or file from your startup list...do you know what it is or what program it refers to?

Let's do this to remove the stray entries, and do an online scan:

1. Please re-open HiJackThis and choose scan only. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {F99BF145-86E9-4DDC-8BCA-D05843AE83CC} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\awtqn.dll (file missing)
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {BA52B914-B692-46c4-B683-905236F6F655} - (no file)

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked.

Reboot the computer.

2. Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner

Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
      Scan Archives
      Scan Mail Bases

  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:
      Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
    • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.

3. Post back with a new HJT log, the Kaspersky scan results, any information about that O4 entry, and more information about the 'warnings' you are experiencing....

I don't know what horyfyne.exe is and after restarting the computer after removing the two lines you suggested, Trend Micro did flag that file as infected with troj_dloader.nxg, but says it is unable to quarantine the file.

The warnings I've been getting up to this point have been Trend Micro popups in regards to a dangerous website, even when I'm just sitting at the desktop. The links listed have been usually something like top-banners.

Thank you again for your help!

You are welcome....

The Kaspersky Scan was clean.

Interesting that Trend identified that file as a trojan and that it couldn't quarantine it...because now I do not see that O4 entry in the HJT log or the file listed in the running processes.

Let's try and delete the folder, then I want to see what combofix 'finds' for us:

1. Please delete these folders using Windows Explorer (if present):
  • Click Start>>All Programs>>Accessories>>Windows Explorer
  • Navigate to the listed folders, then right-click to select them and click delete

C:\Program Files\ComPlus Applications

2. Download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.
  • Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

Combofix found a few items of trash and deleted them, but the rest of the log looks OK, as does your HJT log. How is the computer running? Any problems?

There are two O2/O3 entries in HJT for an earthlink popup blocker, but the files are missing, so we can go ahead and 'fix' those remnant registry entries if you want:

1. Please re-open HiJackThis and choose scan only. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

O2 - BHO: EarthLink Popup Blocker - {4B5F2E08-6F39-479a-B547-B2026E4C7EDF} - C:\Program Files\EarthLink Pop-Up Blocker\Pnel.dll (file missing)
O3 - Toolbar: Pop-Up Blocker - {D7F30B62-8269-41AF-9539-B2697FA7D77E} - C:\Program Files\EarthLink Pop-Up Blocker\Pnel.dll (file missing)

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked.

Reboot the computer.

Let me know what problems you may still be having and then we'll see if we need to do anymore...

I ran a Trend Micro PC-Cillen scan and aside from some cookies and one adware item, no viruses were detected. I have not been getting the pop up warnings either. It appears that I might be clean.

Is there anything else you would recommend I do?

Nope...just the standard things...like removing all the tools we used (and that you may have used before coming here, like VundoFix etc).

Then the standard 'all clean' stuff:

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
  • THIS IS IMPORTANT! - If you are using Windows XP then you should reset system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point and that you have a clean restore point should you need one!

Now let's reset your restore points.

Click Start Menu >> All Programs >> Accessories >> System Tools >> SystemRestore

Press OK. Choose 'Create a Restore Point' then Next. Name it and press 'Create' then when the confirmation screen shows the restore point has been created click 'Close'.

Next go to Start Menu >> Run, then type:

    cleanmgr

click OK, when Disk Cleanup opens go to the 'More Options' tab and press 'Cleanup' on the system restore area which will remove all the restore points except the one we just created. To close Disk Cleanup and remove the Temporary Internet Files detected in the initial scan click OK then choose Yes on the confirmation window.

  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    • Click once on the Security tab
    • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    • Click once on the Custom Level button.
      • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
    • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
    • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
The following is a list of tools and utilities that I like to suggest to people. This list is full of great tools and utilities to help you understand how you got infected and how to keep from getting infected again.
  • Spybot Search & Destroy- Uber powerful tool which can search and annhilate nasties that make it onto your system. Now with an Immunize section that will help prevent future infections.
  • AdAware - Another very powerful tool which searches and kills nasties that infect your system. AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy compliment each other very well.
  • SpywareBlaster - Great prevention tool to keep nasties from installing on your system.
  • SpywareGuard - Works as a Spyware "Shield" to protect your computer from getting malware in the first place.
  • IE-SpyAd for Zoned Out - puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
  • ATF Cleaner by Atribune. This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only. ATF is a new, freeware, temporary file cleaner for Windows, IE, Firefox and Opera with a simple, easy-to-use interface. The main screen allows the user to either clean all temporary files, or select files for cleaning. The program also knows if Firefox and or Opera is being used, and gives the option of cleaning the temporary files associated with those applications.
To find out more information about how you got infected in the first place and some great guidelines to follow to prevent future infections you can read this article by Tony Klein. These are excellent reads too: I'm not pulling your leg and Malware: Preventing the Infection

Remember...be careful out there!
