Hi brrry,
Any time you run a HiJackThis scan in the future and produce a log, try to run it in normal boot mode if possible.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove log items with HighjackThis. Start HijackThis.
Click Do System Scan Only. When the Scan is complete, Check the following entries:
(Some of these lines may be missing)

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O1 - Hosts: 1.1.1.1 f-secure.com
O1 - Hosts: 1.1.1.1 http://www.f-secure.com
O1 - Hosts: 1.1.1.1 ftp.f-secure.com
O1 - Hosts: 1.1.1.1 ftp.sophos.com
O1 - Hosts: 1.1.1.1 liveupdate.
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [USB Storage Toolbox] d:\USBToolbox\Res.EXE
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [dvd43] C:\Program Files\dvd43\dvd43_tray.exe

Make sure Every other window except HJT is closed (No other tabs showing in the bottom tray), and Click Fix Checked.
----------------------------------------------------------
If you would like us to help you, got to Control Panel, Add/Remove and Uninstall the following two programs.
DVD43
USBToolbox

If you decide not to Uninstall dvd43, we will be unable to help you. This is a policy issue for us.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Post a New HJT Log
Reboot your computer in Normal Mode if possible. Start HijackThis. Click Do System Scan and Save a Log File.
When the Scan is complete, select the whole log (Ctrl-A), copy and paste the log contents in a reply.

Unread postby brrry » July 16th, 2007, 3:11 am

Hi,
Sorry but i wasn't able to do any of this in normal mode as when i ran hijack this it was shutdown again almost straight away.
Therefore it was all done in safe mode.
I have uninstalled dvd43 and usb tool box as you requested.

Virus doesn't seem to be beaten as yet.
Thanks for your time.

Remove log items with HighjackThis. Start HijackThis.
Click Do System Scan Only. When the Scan is complete, Check the following entries:
(Some of these lines may be missing)

F3 - REG:win.ini: load=C:\WINDOWS\system32\jqarfle\lsass.exe
F3 - REG:win.ini: run=C:\WINDOWS\system32\jqarfle\lsass.exe
O4 - Startup: lsass.lnk = ?

Make sure Every other window except HJT is closed (No other tabs showing in the bottom tray), and Click Fix Checked.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Reboot (Nromal Mode if it Works)
----------------------------------------------------------
Folder Deletion
In Windows Explorer (My Computer), navigate to each folder shown below, highlight the folder if found, and press Delete.
C:\Windows\System32\\jqarfle\
In the case of a folder removal, you may have to first open the folder, choose View, Details, and delete all the underlying files and folders before an entire folder can be deleted.
If you need to delete underlying files in a folder and are unable to do so:
Right click the file set for deletion, and check Properties to see if it's read-only. Uncheck the read-only box, click Apply and OK. Then retry Delete.
If a message pops up saying "File in use", or something like that, hit Ctrl-Alt-Delete and look under the Processes tab. If the exact filename is in there, highlight it and click End Process, then retry Delete.
Please Note the name and location of any item you cannot delete, or any file not found.
-----------------------------------------------------------
If you can start in Normal mode or Safe Mode with Networking please do the following:
-----------------------------------------------------------
Download and Install CCleaner
  • Download CCleaner from here
  • Double click on ccsetupXXX_slim.exe to start the installation of CCleaner. (XXX is the version number)
  • Click OK
  • Click Next
  • Click I agree
  • Click Next
  • Click Install
  • Once the installation has finished, click Finish
-----------------------------------------------------------
Run CCleaner Cleaning Scan. This will remove all Temp files, cookies, and Internet History.
If it's not already running, Start CCleaner.
Click on the Cleaner block on the left. Choose the Windows tab.
Click the Run Cleaner button. This process could take a while. When CCleaner shows how much has been removed, cleaning is finished.
Exit CCleaner by clicking on the X button in the upper right of the CCleaner window.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Download and Run AVG Anti-Spyware:
Download the trial version of AVG Anti-Spyware from here and install it. When the program has been installed, and you click the Finish button, AVG Anti-Spyware will open. Do not run a scan yet.
If the program does not automatically update itself during installation, or you are unsure whether it has done so, please do the following:
  • Click the Update icon at the top and under Manual Update click the Start update button.
  • The program will either update or inform you that no update was available.
  • It is essential that you get the update - keep trying until successful. (Note: If you have problems getting the update, you can download an installer for the full database from here (save it on your desktop). Once you have downloaded the installer, make sure that AVG Anti-Spyware is closed and then double-click on avgas-signatures-full-current.exe to install the database).
Please set up the program as follows:
  • Click the Shield icon at the top and under Resident shield is... click active. This should now change to inactive.
  • Click the Update icon and untick the automatic update option.
  • Click on Scanner on the toolbar.
  • Click on the Settings tab.
    • Under How to act? - make sure that Quarantine is selected.
    • Under How to scan? - All checkboxes should be ticked.
    • Under Possibly unwanted software - All checkboxes should be ticked.
    • Under Reports - Select Do not automatically generate reports.
    • Under What to scan? - Select Scan every file.
Close all open windows.
  • Click on Scanner on the toolbar.
  • Click on Complete System Scan to start the scan process.
  • Let the program scan your computer.
  • When the scan has finished, follow the instructions below:
    • Make sure that Set all elements to: shows Quarantine
    • Important: Click on the Apply all Actions button (*** This must done before saving the report ***)
    • When the program has finished, it will display the message All actions have been applied.
    • Then click the Save Scan Report button.
    • Click the Save Report as button.
    • Save the report to your Desktop.
  • Right-click the AVG Tray Icon and select Exit.

Please post the results from the AVG Anti-spyware report and a new HiJackThis log.

You don't need these items any more, so you can check them.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove log items with HighjackThis. Start HijackThis.
Click Do System Scan Only. When the Scan is complete, Check the following entries:
(Some of these lines may be missing)

O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-19\..\Run: [AVG7_Run] C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVG7\avgw.exe /RUNONCE (User 'LOCAL SERVICE')
O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-20\..\Run: [AVG7_Run] C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVG7\avgw.exe /RUNONCE (User 'NETWORK SERVICE')
O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-18\..\Run: [AVG7_Run] C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVG7\avgw.exe /RUNONCE (User 'SYSTEM')
O4 - HKUS\.DEFAULT\..\Run: [AVG7_Run] C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVG7\avgw.exe /RUNONCE (User 'Default user')

Make sure Every other window except HJT is closed (No other tabs showing in the bottom tray), and Click Fix Checked.

Your log looks clean.

Hi again,

The computer seems to be running well.
Something has happened to the wireless router though. The computer doesn't tries to connect to it but fails.
That may be a different problem though. (unless the virus can reside there). :/

Thanks very much for your help

Cheers

brrry,
-----------------------------------------------------------
Disable WinXP System Restore
Disable your System Restore to remove malware files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing them. The only way to erase these files is to temporarily disable System Restore. You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.
- Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
- On the System Restore tab, put a Check mark in the Turn Off System Restore check box.
- Click OK twice, and then click Yes when you are prompted to restart the computer.
If you are not prompted to reboot, do it on your own.
-----------------------------------------------------------
After the Reboot,
Enable WinXP System Restore
- Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
- On the System Restore tab, Clear the Check mark beside the Turn Off System Restore check box.
- Click OK twice, and then click Yes when you are prompted to restart the computer.
The Disable/Re-enable System Restore sequence is not to be done regularly, but only once after the removal of malware.

At worst, in case it was corrupted, you can re-install the wireless software on the PC.
