Computer slow and IE is rediredting to ad websites

Unread postby shannon » July 14th, 2007, 9:47 pm

Hi, I am new and I need help. I ran all the programs required AdAware, Spybot, and A2 but I'm still having a lot of problems with my computer running really slow, and when I go to web sites such as ebay, amazon.com and others, I get redirected to advertisement websites. Then my IE freezes up!
Please help! Thanks

Hi! Welcome to the MWR forums.
My name is Scotty. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can take a while to research.
Please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:
  • I will working be on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

Please be patient as my posts to you have to be checked before I reply, so they make take longer.

Hi Shannon

Hope they weren't too unhappy at PC Tools.

Step 1:
Please download HostXpert.

  • Unzip HostsXpert.zip
  • Double click on HostsXpert.exe
  • Then click on "Restore ms Hosts file" to restore your Hosts file to its default condidtion..
  • Click on Make Read Only to secure it against further infection.
  • Close program when complete.

Step 2:
Run HijackThis, select Do a system scan only and place checks against the following entries (if they are still present):

    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch =
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AlcxMonitor] ALCXMNTR.EXE

WITH ALL OTHER WINDOWS CLOSED Click on Fix Checked and exit HijackThis.

Step 3
Delete the older versions of Java and download the newest.
Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components.
  1. Close any programmes you may have running, ESPECIALLY your web browser
  2. Click Start > Control Panel.
  3. Click Add/Remove Programs.
  4. Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  5. Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  6. Repeat as many times as necessary to remove all versions of Java.
  7. Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.

Then download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) (4th one down the list), which is JRE6u2, and click Yes at the page warning, then accept the Licence Agreement before downloading the Offline file.

Step 5:
I would advise updating Adobe Reader, as the latest version clears up any vulnerabilities of previous versions.
First uninstall the version you have on your computer then download and install Adobe Reader 8.1.

Step 6
Post back with a new HijackThis log and let me know if your problems are gone, please.

Does not seem to be working

Unread postby shannon » July 15th, 2007, 8:21 pm

Scotty,

I am still having problems with IE running slow, freezing up, and redirecting to ad websites. I went to http://www.wtkr.com (a local news station) where I have been having problems with redirecting and it is still doing the same thing. The tool bar at the bottom of IE that tells you what it is downloading goes through about 50 different website names, none that I really recongnize, one is http://www.pcfrenzy.com, I can't remember other names The HJT log above is still my most recent one after performing the steps you gave me.

Hi Shannon

Download AVG Anti-Spyware.
  • Install AVG Anti-Spyware.
  • Launch AVG by double-clicking on the icon.
  • The program will now open to the main screen.
  • You will need to update AVG to the latest definition files.
    • At the top of the main screen click Update.
      • Then in the Manual Update section, click on Start Update.
  • The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  • When updates are completed, close AVG.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update AVG.

AVG Report:
There is no file named report in the Programs File\Grisoft\AVG anti-spyware 7.5/Reports

I set all the settings on the Settings tab prior to running the scan. What do I do now?

Oh, for some reason, I am now unable to use the search option to search for files on my computer, it worked a couple days ago I keep getting a window that asks if I want to create a shortcut. If I create the shortcut the shortcut does not work.

Update!

Unread postby shannon » July 16th, 2007, 2:44 pm

Scotty,

Just wanted to give you a quick update. I have tried several websites this afternoon and I don't seem to be having any more problems with IE. No more rediredting and freezing up and I can surf around much faster.
Thanks!

I'm still having the problem with searching for files though. I'm not sure what happened there.

Hi Shannon

For safety sake, you should copy these instructions to Notepad then disconnect from the Internet. When you have done that, right-click the icons in the Notification Area on your taskbar (bottom right beside the clock). Exit all of them.
That would be AVG, Asquared and your anti-virus.

Then, Run HijackThis, select Do a system scan only and place checks against the following entries (if they are still present):

    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch =

WITH ALL OTHER WINDOWS CLOSED Click on Fix Checked and exit HijackThis.

Also, it's not advisable to have two anti-spy scanners running at once, and as AVG is a 30day trial, you might as well uninstall that. Then reboot the computer and try Windows Search again.

Post back with a new HijackThis log and let me know if Search is working again.
I forgot to ask. Before you uninstall AVG take a look in the Quarantine and tell me what, if anything, is in there.

Scotty,

There is nothing in the quarantine in the AVG program, should I do another scan? There were 83 items found when I scanned the first time but I'm not sure what happened to them. None are showing in the quarantine section and there was one that was high risk. I will wait until I hear from you before I try to fix the search problem.

Hi Shannon

If there is nothing in the quarantine then it found nothing sinister. The 83 items would have been tracking cookies which are cleaned automatically.

Remember to quit the real-time protection before continuing the rest of the post. :)

Scotty,

Here is the HJT log. I exited the programs before running HJT but I have Norton anti-virus and when I right cliked on the mouse it didn't give me the option to exit. I turned off everything in the program I could (auto-protect, auto-update, etc.) but it was still on the task bar. Anyway, search still does not work on my computer so I can not search for files.
