Hijacked Google searches.

Unread postby rgclark » July 14th, 2007, 2:24 pm

Google searches using IE on my PC get redirected to other search engines. It seems to be random which search engine it gets redirected to and sometimes they are purely commercial sites. It doesn't seem to effect Google searches using Netscape.
My Hijack This log is copied below.
Is this a common mode of Hijacking now?

I just found out this redirection also happens with Yahoo IE, but not some other well known search engines such as Excite.com, Lycos.com etc.

Hi rgclark,

Step 1

Please print out this set of instructions as you will be rebooting the PC.

  1. Please download Fixwareout from Bleeping Computer and save it to your desktop.
  2. Double click to run it.
  3. Click Next, followed by Install.
  4. Once installation is done, checked (ticked) Run fixit box.
  5. Click Finish.
  6. The fix will start, follow the prompts. You will be asked to reboot the PC, please do so. Your system will take longer to start, this is normal.
  7. Once your PC rebooted, go to Start > Control Panel. Double click on Network Connections.
  8. Right click on your default connection and select Properties.
  9. Select the General tab.
  10. Double click on Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) under This connection uses the following items:
  11. Select Obtain an IP address automatically and Obtain DNS server address automatically.
  12. Click OK twice to save the settings. Reboot when prompted to.
  13. Go to Start > Run and type in cmd.
  14. Type in the following in the code box line by line, pressing Enter after each line:
    Code: Select all
    ipconfig /renew
    ipconfig /flushdns
    exit

Step 2

Please download SmitFraudFix.exe by S!Ri and save it to the desktop.

  1. Double click on SmitfraudFix.exe.
  2. Press 1 then hit the Enter key.
  3. It will create a report named rapport.txt, usually at C drive.

Note: process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user. Read more here

Step 3

Show hidden files and folders

  1. Open My Computer.
  2. Go to Tools > Folder Options.
  3. Select the View tab.
  4. Scroll down to Hidden files and folders.
  5. Select Show hidden files and folders.
  6. Uncheck (untick) Hide extensions of known file types.
  7. Uncheck (untick) Hide protected operating system files (Recommended).
  8. Click Yes when prompted.
  9. Click OK.
  10. Close My Computer.

Please go to Virus Total or Jotti and upload C:\WINDOWS\iestartup.exe for scanning.

For Virus Total

  1. Click on the Browse button.
  2. Navigate and locate C:\WINDOWS\iestartup.exe file.
  3. Click Open, then click on Send.

For Jotti
  1. Click on the Browse button.
  2. Navigate and locate C:\WINDOWS\iestartup.exe file.
  3. Click on Open, then click on Submit.

In your next reply, please post back:

  1. Fixwareout log file (C:\Fixwareout\report.txt)
  2. SmitfraudFix report (C:\rapport.txt)
  3. Virus Total or Jotti scan results
  4. A new HijackThis log

On this Google Groups forum it was suggested to try the Windows malware removal tool:

Google redirect exploit.
http://groups.google.com/group/spyware- ... 2d18c333ef

I tried it and it worked.
Since it is freeware I think everyone should have it installed:

http://www.microsoft.com/athome/securit ... fault.mspx

Thanks for taking the time to write out the steps to solve it manually.
These things are quite insidious and I might have to be back later.

I know that all spyware hasn't been cleaned since I downloaded the program Stopzilla and it detected more infections.
However, Stopzilla is shareware. You're allowed to install the program and it will search for infections on your system. However, to remove them you have to pay the registration fee.
Still deciding if I want to register it.
My latest "Hijack This" log is copied below.

Hi rgclark,

I see that Noadware is installed on your computer. Although Noadware is no longer consider a rogue/suspect anti-spyware, due to its history, I would recommend it to be uninstalled. This is however optional. If you have not faced problems with it, you can keep the program.

You can read more about Noadware's history here: http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_ant ... m#naw_note

Step 1

Please disable Spybot Search & Destroy Teatimer temporarily as it can interfere with the fixes.

  1. Go to Start > All Programs > Spybot - Search & Destroy > Spybot Search & Destroy.
  2. Click on Mode > Advanced Mode. When it prompts you, click Yes.
  3. On the left hand side, click on Tools.
  4. Check (tick) this box if it is not yet ticked: Resident.
  5. You will notice that Resident is now added under Tools. Click on Resident.
  6. Uncheck (untick) this box: Resident "TeaTimer" (Protection of over-all system settings) active.
  7. Exit Spybot Search & Destroy.

Step 2

Please disable Windows Defender temporarily as it can interfere with the fixes.

  1. Go to Start > All Programs > Windows Defender.
  2. Click on Tools at the top.
  3. Under Settings, click on Options.
  4. Under Automatic scanning, uncheck (untick) Automatically scan my computer (recommended) box.
  5. Under Real-time protection options, uncheck (untick) Use real-time protection (recommended) box.
  6. Click on the Save button at the bottom right hand corner.

Step 3

Please open HijackThis and select Do a system scan only.

I decided to buy the Stopzilla program hoping to save time and effort. I ran it to clean the infections it found.
I ran "Hijack This" again afterward. I copied the log below.

Thanks for taking the time to respond.
I already have installed the Windows malware removal tool, Spybot, Ad-Aware, Noadware, and Stopzilla.
Does AVG offer any significant improvement over these?

Hello Bob,

I will still need the AVG Antispyware scan report.

As for whether it offers any improvements over the protection programs that you have, is not really a matter. AVG Antispyware is also a trial program, once it expires (30 days later), it will no longer protect your system in real-time and update hourly automatically. You will need to purchase the product if you want those features.

You may remove it via Add/Remove Programs if you choose not to keep it.

There's also another issue you need to take note of. Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool only targets specific malwares and remove them; it's not meant to be a replacement of any protection programs.

For more information, please see the Malicious Software Removal Tool page.

For a list of infections targeted by the tool, please see this page.
