Hi,

I got an email today for an ecard which unfortunately I followed. I have subsequently tried running an online kaspersky online scan of my system but it keeps failing.

I took a look at items in my startup and noticed a suspicious c:windows\scanregw.exe /autorun and think this may be my problem (but I'm no expert, that's why I'm here :)

Bear in mind that Win98 Gold is no longer supported by Microsoft, and has security holes in it.
You may not be able to compensate for the deficiencies much longer.
You appear to have a scanner and speech recognition software on it.
This will stretch this Operation system to the breaking point, along with the Adobe startups.
There may be a particular issue with Adobe attempting to ship updates to Acrobat 5.
We will stop all Adobe startups, and eventually uninstall the old Java.

It is very critical to keep the number of running processes to an absolute minimum with this version of Windows.

Remove log items with HighjackThis. Start HijackThis.
Click Do System Scan Only. When the Scan is complete, Check the following entries:

Make sure Every other window except HJT is closed (No other tabs showing in the bottom tray), and Click Fix Checked.

Reboot your computer and sign in as usual

Download and Install CCleaner
  • Download CCleaner from here
  • Double click on ccsetupXXX_slim.exe to start the installation of CCleaner. (XXX is the version number)
  • Click OK
  • Click Next
  • Click I agree
  • Click Next
  • Click Install
  • Once the installation has finished, click Finish
  • Under Options, Settings, make sure "Run CCleaner when computer starts" and "Automatically check for updates" are both Unchecked

Run CCleaner Cleaning Scan. This will remove all Temp files, cookies, and Internet History.
Click on the Cleaner block on the left. Choose the Windows tab.
Click the Run Cleaner button. This process could take a while. When CCleaner shows how much has been removed, cleaning is finished.
Exit CCleaner by clicking on the X button in the upper right of the CCleaner window.

Retrieve the Installed Programs List from CCleaner
In the Left Pane, click Tools
Verify that Uninstall is highlighted in color, or click on it.
In the lower Right, click Save to Text File.
Pull down the arrow at the top of the Save dialog and choose Desktop as the location.
You can leave the filename as install.txt
Click Save
Exit CCleaner by clicking on the X button in the upper right of the CCleaner window.

Post a New HJT Log
Start HijackThis. Click Do System Scan and Save a Log File.
When the Scan is complete, select the whole log (Ctrl-A), copy and paste the log contents in a reply.

Your PC looks clean, but I have a few suggestions for you.

I the long run, I would suggest installing Avira (Antivir) free Antivirus, and uninstalling Norton.
The Norton Engine you have is too old to have optimum effectiveness, and it is too heavy in its use of resources for Win98.
The Antivir free installer download is here: http://www.free-av.com/

You can't uninstall Norton while online, because your PC will be attacked in a few seconds.
So you should
  • Download the Antivir installer and save it.
  • Then disconnect the internet cable and Uninstall all Norton (Symantec) products appearing in Control Panel Add/Remove Programs, and choose Remove for each one.
  • Then Install Antivir by double clicking on the installer you saved.
  • When finished installing Antivir, reconnect the Internet cable, go online and immediately tell AntiVir to Update.

After Norton (and any Symantech) have been Uninstalled follow the instruction below to rid yourself of the leftovers.

To completely remove Norton Antivirus, Download and Run the Norton Removal Tool for your version of Windows.

Perform the DownLoad for your version of Windows (download to your desktop as it says), then STOP

On your desktop click on Norton Removal Tool and follow the instructions.

Peer to Peer File Sharing
Please note that as long as you're using any form of Peer-to-Peer networking (Kazaa Lite, Limewire, etc.) and downloading files from non-documented sources, you can expect infestations of malware to occur. Once upon a time, P2P file sharing was fairly safe. That is no longer true.
You may decide to continue P2P sharing, but keep in mind that this practice can be the source of major PC infections.

Regardless of the program used, the practice of file-sharing is very unsafe for the health of your PC.

I did a kaspersky online scan today and again it would not complete. It literally shuts down at around 80%. However, it did display that it found a virus and 62 suspicious files before it stopped working correctly.

I have downloaded antivir but it is no longer supported for win98. Should I bother installing it or would you suggest another antivirus option for my OS?

I will do a scan with my current version of norton at the moment, however I doubt it will fix the problem as it is out of date.
