My problem is my laptop. I am loosing icons in the system tray. I had twelve and now am down to six. I have just recently rebooted the system and that is when they went away. I just recently rebuilt my laptop and had the problem before I rebuilt it.

I also had this problem on my desktop machine. I had previously submitted reports and took action at the direction of Katana. I have rebuilt my desktop as well.

So here I am again with the same problem. I am missing the "Safe to Remove" icon which is the most important, since I have an USB removeable drive.

BTW, I know about the "hide icons" on my systray. But there is no 'hide icons" becuse they are all busy.

So what do you want me to do?

The reason for the descrepancy in time, between the two HJT logs, is that I did HJT with the icons gone first, then a system restore when I knew the Icons were there, then a HJT log. I can no longer do this since my system has chnged too much after the system restore where I knew the icons were there.

I hope this is not too confusing.

Anyway if you need further explanation let me know.

Hi geraldheyman. :)

Welcome back to Malware Removal Forum. My name is mayi and I will be helping you. As I am still an undergraduate, I will need my fixes checked before posting back to you. Thank you for your patience.

Hi geraldheyman,

I see that you are using HijackThis version 2 Beta. As it is a beta software, it might not be stable and may cause problems for your PC.

  1. Please download the latest stable version of HijackThis from here. Do Not run it directly via a browser. Save it to your desktop.
  2. Next, go to Start > Control Panel. Double click on Add/Remove Programs. Locate HijackThis 2.0.0 from the list of installed programs and click Change/Remove to uninstall it.
  3. Now, run the stable version of HijackThis that you've just downloaded.
  4. Click on the Unzip button. It will install HijackThis to C:\Program Files\HijackThis.
  5. Go to C:\Program Files\HijackThis and double click on hijackthis.exe to run it.
  6. Select Do a system scan and save a logfile. Please post this log in your next reply.
Do not fix anything you see as not all entries are harmful to your PC.

  1. Right click on the Task Bar and select Properties.
  2. Uncheck (untick) these boxes:
    Group similar taskbar buttons
    Hide inactive icons
  3. Click OK.

Can you please tell me if your icons have re-appeared.

Please also tell me in more details about the icons that disappear, both before and after the system restore.

If you need to provide a screenshot for a better explanation, please do so.

The Icons that disappear after the reboot are connected to these running processes:

Second copy
Windows Messenger
Safely Remove Hardware (for removable disks)
Auto Epson CX4800 (shared printer)
Big Fix (Gateway Maint Software)

The Safely Remove Hardware is the most problem causing since I must shut down the system to safely remove the removable disk.

These Icons do not reappear after following your directions.

I do not know how to send you a screen shot.

Here is the log.

Hi geraldheyman,

Step 1

Disable Winpatrol temporarily

While having Winpatrol to protect your computer is good, it may interfere with our fixes. Please disable it temporarily; it can be re-enabled again after you are clean.

  1. Right click on the Scotty Dog icon in the system tray (next to the clock).
  2. Click Options.
  3. At the bottom of the options page, uncheck (untick) Automatically Run WinPatrol When Computer Starts.
  4. Click the X in the upper right corner to end program.
  5. Right click the Scotty Dog icon in the system tray again.
  6. Click Exit Program.
WinPatrol is now disabled and will not start at bootup.

Step 2

Please open HijackThis and put a check (tick) next to this line:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [msci] C:\DOCUME~1\Owner\LOCALS~1\Temp\2007726823_mcinfo.exe /insfin

Click Fix checked. Close HijackThis.

Step 3

Download the latest copy of Adobe Reader from here.

Save the installation file; don't run it yet.

Step 4

Download the latest Java from here.

Scroll down to Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u2 and click on Download. Click on Accept License Agreement, the page will refresh.

Click on Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language and save it.

  1. Go to Start > Control Panel. Double click on Add/Remove Programs.
  2. Locate Adobe Reader 7.0 and click on Change/Remove to uninstall it.
  3. Repeat Steps 1 and 2 for J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 2 and Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1
  4. Once done, close Add/Remove Programs and Control Panel.
After uninstalling the 3 programs, install the latest version of Adobe and Java that you've downloaded earlier.

Step 5

  1. Please download AVG Anti-Spyware and save it to your desktop.
  2. Double click on avgas-setup-7.5.1.43.exe to install AVG Anti-Spyware. Install it in the default location.
  3. Once installed, start AVG Anti-Spyware by going to Start > All Programs > AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 > AVG Anti-Spyware.

    • Next to Automatic Updates, click on Change state. It should now be Inactive.
    • Next to Last Update, click on Update now. If your firewall prompts you, tell your firewall to allow it. Should you be unable to update it, download the updates from here. Save it to your desktop. Double click to run the installation and the updates will be installed. Make sure AVG Anti-Spyware is closed during the installation.
    • Right-click the AVG Anti-Spyware icon near the clock and uncheck (untick) Start with Windows. Confirm by clicking Yes.
  5. Now click on the Scanner button at the top.

  10. Under Reports:, uncheck (untick) the Only if threats were found box and select Do not automatically generate report.
  11. Under What to scan?, select Scan every file.
Do not run a scan yet. You will run a scan later.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.

  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Under Main choose: Select All, then uncheck (untick) Cookies box.
  • Click the Empty Selected button.

If you use Firefox browser

    • At the bottom of the window click on the Apply all Actions button. (3)

I hsd some interesting attempts

1. AVG aborted with a spontaneous reboot.
2. Kaspersky took 4 attempts before I got results.
3. Kaspersky caused 3 reboots before working ok.

I can see some of the missing icons by going to right click task bar, then properties then click on hide icons then click on customize... The missing items are in a list called "past items".

All of this seems like a big game of cat and mouse to me.

Hi geraldheyman,

Step 1

Disable Winpatrol temporarily

While having Winpatrol to protect your computer is good, it may interfere with our fixes. Please disable it temporarily; it can be re-enabled again after you are clean.

  1. Right click on the Scotty Dog icon in the system tray (next to the clock).
  2. Click Options.
  3. At the bottom of the options page, uncheck (untick) Automatically Run WinPatrol When Computer Starts.
  4. Click the X in the upper right corner to end program.
  5. Right click the Scotty Dog icon in the system tray again.
  6. Click Exit Program.
WinPatrol is now disabled and will not start at bootup.

Step 2

Please open HijackThis and put a check (tick) next to this line:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [msci] C:\DOCUME~1\Owner\LOCALS~1\Temp\2007726823_mcinfo.exe /insfin

Click Fix checked. Close HijackThis.

Step 3

Show hidden files and folders
  1. Open My Computer.
  2. Go to Tools > Folder Options.
  3. Select the View tab.
  4. Scroll down to Hidden files and folders.
  5. Select Show hidden files and folders.
  6. Uncheck (untick) Hide extensions of known file types.
  7. Uncheck (untick) Hide protected operating system files (Recommended).
  8. Click Yes when prompted.
  9. Click OK.
  10. Close My Computer.

Navigate to C:\Documents and Settings\51122\Local Settings\Temp and delete this file: 2007726823_mcinfo.exe

  2. Locate J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 2 and click on Change/Remove to uninstall it.
  3. Repeat Steps 1 and 2 for Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1
  4. Once done, close Add/Remove Programs and Control Panel.
After uninstalling the 2 programs, install the latest version Java that you've downloaded earlier.

Step 5

Please download SUPERAntiSpyware Home Edition (free)

Install it and double-click the icon on your desktop to run it.

It will ask if you want to update the program definitions, click Yes, if your firewall prompts, please allow it.
Under Configuration and Preferences, click the Preferences button.
Click the Scanning Control tab.
Under Scanner Options make sure the following are checked:

1. Close browsers before scanning
2. Scan for tracking cookies
3. Terminate memory threats before quarantining.
4. Ignore System Restore/Volume Information on ME and XP

Please leave the other options unchecked.

On the main screen, under Scan for Harmful Software click Scan your computer.
On the left check C:\Fixed Drive.
On the right, under Complete Scan, choose Perform Complete Scan.
Click Next to start the scan. Please be patient while it scans your computer.
After the scan is complete a summary box will appear. Click OK.
Make sure everything in the white box has a check next to it, then click Next.
It will quarantine what it found and if it asks if you want to reboot, click
Yes.

To retrieve the removal information - please do the following:

1. After reboot, double-click the SUPERAntispyware icon on your desktop.
2. Click Preferences. Click the Statistics/Logs tab.
3. Under Scanner Logs, double-click SUPERAntiSpyware Scan Log.
4. It will open in your default text editor (such as Notepad/Wordpad).
5. Please highlight everything , then right-click and choose copy.
6. Click close and close again to exit the program.

Now please paste the removal information along with a fresh HijackThis log in your reply. If it's a large log, you may need several replies to post it.

I don't understand. I have had winpatrol off since your post of the one before jul 12 at 10:23 pm(local time). There has been no icon in the notification tray for some time. If necessary I will uninstall winpatrol.

I have also loaded java runtime environment se version 6 update 1 previously. I do not have version 5 on my machine. I will download update 2 after removing update 1.

I will proceed with the following instructions in your post.

Hi geraldheyman,

As far as I can see, your computer is clean. At this point, I can't help you any more as there is no tech support services here. You can seek help at Tech Support Forum about your missing icons.

Below are some tips to prevent a re-infection. There's no need to follow all recommendations.

  1. Go to Start > Control Panel. Double click on Add/Remove Programs.
  2. Locate SuperAntispwyare Free Edition and click on Change/Remove to uninstall it.
  3. Once done, close Add/Remove Programs and Control Panel.

Re-enable Winpatrol

  1. Go to Start > All Programs > WinPatrol > WinPatrol
  2. Choose Options tab.
  3. At the bottom of the options page, Check Automatically Run WinPatrol When Computer Starts.

Flush the system restore points

  1. Right click on My Computer and select Properties.
  2. Select the System Restore tab.
  3. Check (tick) Turn off system restore on all drives box.
  4. Click OK.
  5. Restart your computer.
After restarting your computer, follow these steps:

  1. Right click on My Computer and select Properties.
  2. Select the System Restore tab.
  3. Uncheck (untick) Turn off system restore on all drives box.
  4. Click OK.
  5. Restart your computer.
Note: Do this only ONCE, don't flush it regularly.

Keep your system updated

Microsoft releases patches for Windows and Office products regularly to patch up Windows and Office products loopholes and fix any bugs found. Please ensure that you visit the following websites regularly or do update your system regularly.

Install the updates immediately if they are found. Reboot your computer if necessary, revisit Windows Update and Office update sites until there are no more updates to be installed.

To update Windows

Go to Start > All Programs > Windows Update

To update Office

Open up any Office program.

Go to Help > Check for Updates

Alternatively, you can visit the links below to update Windows and Office products.

Windows Update
Office Update

If you are forgetful, you can change some settings so that you will be
informed of updates. Here's how:

  1. Go to Start > Control Panel > Automatic Updates
  2. Select Automatic (recommended) radio button if you want the updates to be downloaded and installed without prompting you.
  3. Select Download updates for me, but let me chose when to install them radio button if you want the updates to be downloaded automatically but to be installed at another time.
  4. Select Notify me but don't automatically download or install them radio button if you want to be notified of the updates.

Java is another program that updates regularly to fix bug issues and loopholes in it. Here's the instructions for updating Java:

  1. Click here to visit Java's website.
  2. Scroll down to Java Runtime Environment (JRE). Click on Download.
  3. Select Accept License Agreement. The page will refresh.
  4. Click on Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language and save it to a convenient location.
  5. Run this installation to update your Java.
Remember to remove all previous versions of Java when you update it to a new version to prevent exploitation of the older versions left on your system.

Besides Windows and Java that need regular updating, antivirus, anti-spyware and firewall programs update regularly too.

Please make sure that you update your antivirus, firewall and anti-spyware programs at least once a week.

Be careful when opening attachments and downloading files.

  1. Never open email attachments, not even if they are from someone you know. If you need to open them, scan them with your antivirus program before opening.
  2. Never open emails from unknown senders.
  3. Beware of emails that warn about viruses that are spreading, especially those from antivirus vendors. These email addresses can be easily spoofed. Check the antivirus vendor websites to be sure.
  4. Be careful of what you download. Only download files from known sources. Also, avoid cracked programs. If you need a particular program that costs too much for you, try finding free alternatives on Sourceforge or Pricelessware.

Stop malicious scripts

Windows by default allow scripts (which is VBScript and JavaScript) to run and some of these scripts are malicious. Use Noscript by Symantec or Script Defender by AnalogX to handle these scripts.

Backup regularly

You never know when your PC will become unstable or become so infected that you can't recover it. Follow this Microsoft article to learn how to backup. Follow this article by Microsoft to restore your backups.

Make your Internet Explorer safer

Please read this article to configure Internet Explorer 7 properly.

Avoid P2P

P2P may be a great way to get lots of stuffs, but it is a great way to get infected as well. There's no way to tell if the file being shared is infected. Worse still, some worms spread via P2P networks, infecting you as well. If you do need to use them, use them sparingly. Check this list of clean and infected P2P programs if you need to use one.

Prevent a re-infection

  1. Spyware Blaster
SpywareBlaster is a program that is used to secure Internet Explorer by making it harder for ActiveX programs to run on your computer. It does this by disabling known offending ActiveX programs from running at all.

You can download SpywareBlaster from Javacool.

If you need help in using SpywareBlaster, you can read SpywareBlaster's tutorial at Bleeping Computer.
  2. SpywareGuard
Just as an antivirus program scans a file for viruses before opening it, SpywareGuard does the same thing, except that it scans it for spywares.

You can download SpywareGuard from Javacool.

If you need help in using SpywareGuard, you can SpywareGuard's tutorial at Bleeping Computer.
  3. IE-SPYAD
IE-SPYAD adds over 5000 sites to your Internet Explorer restricted zone so that you will be protected if the website turns out to be a bad one. Sites that are in the restricted zone of Internet Explorer can't have any scripts ran, no downloads and cookies. However, you can still connect to these sites.

You can download IE-SPYAD from Spyware Warrior. Be sure to read the whole website carefully for instructions on usage of IE-SPYAD.

A tutorial for IE-SPYAD can be found at Bleeping Computer.
  4. Hosts File
A Hosts file is like a phone book. You look up someone's name in the phone book before calling him/her. Similarly, your PC will look up the website's IP address before you can view the website.

Hosts file will replace your current Hosts file with another one containing well-known advertisement sites, spyware sites and other bad sites. This new Hosts file will protect you by re-directing these bad sites to 127.0.0.1.

    Here are some Hosts files:

    MVPS Hosts File
    Bluetack's Hosts File
    Bluetack's Host Manager
    hpHosts

A tutorial about Hosts File can be found at Castlecops.
  5. Lavasoft Ad-Aware
Ad-Aware is an anti-spyware program. Like your antivirus program, please run an Ad-Aware scan at least once per week.

Ad-Aware can be downloaded from here.

If you need help in using Ad-Aware, you can read Ad-Aware's tutorial at Bleeping Computer.
  6. Spybot Search and Destroy
Spybot Search & Destroy is another program for scanning spywares and adwares. Not only so, it has other preventive options as well. You are strongly encouraged to run a scan at least once per week.

Spybot Search & Destroy can be downloaded from here.

If you need help in using Spybot Search & Destroy, you can read Spybot Search and Destroy tutorial at Bleeping Computer.
  7. a-squared Free
a-squared Free is also another program for scanning spywares and adwares. It doesn't have preventive features like Spybot Search & Destroy though.

You can download a-squared Free from here.
  8. CounterSpy
CounterSpy is pretty much like Spybot Search & Destroy, but it isn't free.
You can try CounterSpy for 15 days.

Before downloading any anti-spyware programs, always check the Rogue/Suspect list of anti-spyware programs. This will save you from a lot of trouble. If in doubt, don't ever download it.
  9. SiteHound Toolbar
SiteHound is a toolbar that warns you if you go to a site that is known to scam people, that has potentially lots of viruses or spywares or has questionable contents. If you know the site, you can enter it; if you don't, it will bring you back to the previous page. Currently, SiteHound works for Internet Explorer and Firefox only.

Use an alternative Internet Browser

Many of the exploits are directed to users of Internet Explorer. Try using a different browser instead.

Firefox
Opera
K-Meleon

Use an alternative email client

If you are using Outlook Express as your default email client, try using Thunderbird or Pegasus Mail instead.
