Hi,

Sorry for the delay, but Tour de France was so exciting :D

First of all, you should download and install an Anti-Virus program. It detects and removes malicious programs from your computer. Modern antivirus programs are very easy to use and you can find free ones too. One of the best free one is Antivir, you can download it here. Avast! and Active Virus Shield are also good options. Should you have any questions about Anti-Virus programs, don't hesitate to ask.

--

After you have installed an AV, please download ATF-cleaner and save it to your desktop.
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Under Main choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.

    If you use Firefox browser:

  • Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
  • NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

    If you use Opera browser:

  • Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
  • NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
  • Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
--

Last step:

1. Download this file - combofix.exe
2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Please post back a new HijackThis log and the log from Combofix

  • Name the file as fix.reg
  • Change the Save as Type to All Files
  • and Save it on the desktop
Code: Select all
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\shared tools\msconfig\startupreg\uvnx]

Make sure there are NO blank lines before Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

Then double-click on the fix.reg file, and when it prompts to merge say yes.

---

Please download AVG Anti-Spyware to your Desktop or to your usual Download Folder.

I saved the notepad to fix.reg on the desktop. I click on that file (on the desktop) and it just opens....no prompt to merge. Is there another fix.reg I chould be clicking on?

Are you sure you changed the file type to All files? Delete the fix.reg on your desktop and try again.

You have a program called SpywareBot which is not trusted or recognised to be safe. See here

Therefore it is recommended that you remove it using the Add/Remove option on your computer:

Start-Control Panel-Add/Remove

Look for the Spyware Bot program and remove it

Also, you need to move Hijackthis from temporary folder to a permanent location so it can take backups. After that, open HijackThis, do a system scan only and put a checkmark in front of these entries (if found):

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SpywareBot] C:\Program Files\SpywareBot\SpywareBot.exe -boot
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [SpywareBot] C:\Program Files\SpywareBot\SpywareBot.exe -boot

Delete these folders if found:

C:\Program Files\SpywareBot
C:\Documents and Settings\Gene\Application Data\SpywareBot

Please post a new HijackThis log

Jurpo: You were correct I must have saved the fix.reg under text format. It worked correctly and updated. I had the Control panel remove the spyware bot. I did a search and all that remains is
SpywareBot scheduled Scan in the Scheduled Tasks Folder. Should I delete this also?

HjT is now downloaded and in a folder in the root directry of C:\
I ran the scan only and found only the HKLM entry I checked it....should I not take another step? When I rescan it's still there and unchecked.

I found no other spywareBot folders or indicators in the search.

Jurpo: You were correct I must have saved the fix.reg under text format. It worked correctly and updated. I had the Control panel remove the spyware bot. I did a search and all that remains is
SpywareBot scheduled Scan in the Scheduled Tasks Folder. Should I delete this also?

Yes, you can delete that.

Start HijackThis. Click Do System Scan Only. When the Scan is complete, Check the following entry, if it exists:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SpywareBot] C:\Program Files\SpywareBot\SpywareBot.exe -boot

Make sure Every other window except HJT is closed (No other tabs showing in the bottom tray), and Click Fix Checked.

You have an outdated version of Java. You should update it to the latest version Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u2
  • Start
  • Control Panel
  • Add/Remove Programs
  • Delete the old Java versions
  • Then we'll get the latest version of Java -> LINK
  • Scroll down to Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 update 2
  • Download & install it

Reboot your computer and post a new HijackThis log.

Hello

First:

Update your Java.
Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.
Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components.

  • Close any programs you may have running, ESPECIALLY your web browser
  • Click Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment, JRE, J2SE, or Java Webstart in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove all installed versions of Java.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.

Then download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment(JRE), and install it to your computer. It is the fourth one down on the page, called Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 2
Download it, choose save, and save it to your desktop. Then doubleclick it, and it will install the newest version of Java for you to use.

Your log looks clean now, good job :)

Is your computer any better now?

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

  • Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and re-enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.
You can find instructions on how to enable and re enable system restore here:
    Managing Windows Millennium System Restore
    or
    Windows XP System Restore Guide
re-enable system restore with instructions from tutorial above
  • Update your Anti Virus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Anti virus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your anti virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. For an article on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:
Computer Safety On line - Software Firewalls
  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
  • Make your browsing more simple and fun!
Please see how Firefox and / or Opera increases your security on the web and take your browsing experience to a whole new level. Take back the web!
  • Install AVG-Antispyware
AVG-Antispyware is one of the best anti-malware scanners around. It has a free trial when you can use it's resident shield and automatic updates. After the trial, it is still an excellent on demand scanner.
  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs. A article on anti-malware products with links for this program and others can be found here:
Computer Safety on line - Anti-Malware
  • Expand your HOSTS file
HOSTS file is the ultimate windows built-in content blocker - or at least it can be used that way. You can get more information and a very good premade HOSTS file from Here. Please read carefully!
  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Thanks for all your effort

Unread postby docgene » August 1st, 2007, 9:00 am

I have completed your suggestions. Thanks soooooo much for your help. I have noticed one thing though: I don't think it's virus related but my computer takes much longer to boot up. My guess is that one or more processes are running in the background. About 5 minutes after hitting start I get a message that AVG has updated it's database and another process has also updated. The slowness of opening the browser or outlook still continues though Several friends and my work use McAfee virus protection. I'm thinking of subscribing. Am I correct that I should remove AVG and Avast. Do I remove them before or after the download? Any other advise on getting my computer back up to speed?

thanks

AVG-AS is a useful on-demand scanner so you shouldn't remove it. Remember to update the definitions manually every time before a manual scan

If you are planning to change your antivirus program, the safest way is to disconnect from the internet -> uninstall previous antivirus (Avast!) and then install the new AV program while offline.
