OK this is the second machine on this network that I have. I use this one primarily for my email and personal business. It has been slower than usual and I am not sure if there is a problem or not, if you all could help me I would appreciate it.

Hello again DougSr :)

This log is clean, however it does have the IE control panel restriction entries like your other machine:
O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions present
O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present

If you want to remove these please let me know.

We'll use the same procedure to check for malware:

Download Dr.WEB CureIt to your desktop from here:
ftp://ftp.drweb.com/pub/drweb/cureit/cureit.exe
  • Double-click cureit.exe to start the program.
  • Press Start and then OK to start the Express scan
  • The Express scan takes just a few moments to finish, if something is found, click Yes to cure it
  • Once the short scan has finished, Click Options->Change settings
  • Choose the Scan tab and remove the check mark from Heuristic analysis
  • Choose the Actions tab and next to Infected objects select Move, then press OK to close the settings box.
  • Select all hard drives to be scanned by clicking on them - choose all drives - a red dot confirms they will be scanned
  • Click the green arrow on the right to start the scan
  • Click Yes to all if it asks if you want to move a file
  • Click File-> Save report list and save the report to your desktop
  • Close Dr.Web Cureit and reboot your computer (this is important as files may be moved/deleted during reboot)
Then, please download F-Secure Blacklight
  • Click I ACCEPT and download the graphical user interface version to your Desktop
  • Double click the file to run it, choose I accept the agreement then press Scan
  • It will create the fsbl-xxxxxxx.log on your desktop.
  • The log will have a list of all items found.
  • Do not choose to rename any yet! I want to see the log first because legitimate items can also be present.
  • Exit Blacklight and post the contents of the log in your next reply.

Then download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS)
  • Close all applications and windows.
  • Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  • When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt<-this one will be minimized
  • Make sure Format->Word Wrap is unchecked
  • Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your reply

Once complete, please post the Dr Web log, the Blacklight log and both DSS logs, you won't need to produce a new HijackThis log as DSS produces one for you. The logs may not fit into one post so please check that they are complete and use multiple posts if necessary.

Will do but I have to ask since my daughter noticed this one, is this ok?

c:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL$MICROSOFTSMLBIZ\Binn\sqlservr.exe

Every other one has a capital C not small case.

Your daughter has sharp eyes!

C:\ and c:\ are the same to Windows so there's no problem with the capitalization.

This process was started by this entry which has the same capitalization:

O23 - Service: MSSQL$MICROSOFTSMLBIZ - Unknown owner - c:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL$MICROSOFTSMLBIZ\Binn\sqlservr.exe" -sMICROSOFTSMLBIZ (file missing)

Nothing to worry about (unless you aren't wanting to run MS Office Accounting / Business Contact Manager)

Hi DougSr,

All the logs look fine, just a few things to take care of.

The hosts file on this machine looks to be custom and similar to what was on your other machine - are you aware of this? If not, then you can either replace it with the Windows default with HostsXpert:

Download HostXpert.
  • Unzip HostsXpert.zip
  • Double click on HostsXpert.exe
  • Click Backup/Restore->Create Backup to back up your existing hosts file
  • Then click on Restore Original Hosts and OK the prompt to restore your Hosts file to the default
  • Click on Make Hosts Read Only to secure it against changes
  • Close program when complete.
  • If for any reason you wish to restore your original hosts file, you can do so by pressing Make Writeable?, then Backup/Restore->Restore Backup and OK to the prompt.
If you wish to install the MVPs hosts file for additional protection, and I recommend you do, you can do so now by following the instructions in Olive:

Stop and Disable the DNS Client Service
Go to Start, Run and type Services.msc and click OK.
Under the Extended Tab, Scroll down and find this service.
DNS Client
Right-Click on the DNS Client Service. Choose Properties
Select the General tab. Click on the Stop button.
Click the Arrow-down tab on the right-hand side at the Start-up Type box.
From the drop-down menu, click on Manual
Click the Apply tab, then click OK
Close the services console

Then, double-click HostsXpert.exe again
  • Select Make Writeable? if your hosts is read-only
  • Then click on Download, then MVPs Hosts-> Replace and OK to install the MVPs hosts file
  • Click on File Handling and Make Hosts Read Only to secure it against changes
  • Close HostsXpert

You have outdated Java on this machine which needs to be updated as it is now a security risk:
Go to Start » Control Panel » Add/Remove Programs
Find and remove this entry: Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1
Download and install the newest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE), from here:
http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp
The newest version is now version 6 update 2 which has just been released, you will need to update your other machine also.

Next, you have disabled an startup entry using Spybot S&D which should be deleted.
Open Spybot S&D, enable Advanced mode by selecting Mode->Advanced mode from the top menu
Then Select Tools->System Startup from the left menu
Find the disabled entry that looks like this:
HK_LM:Run Alcmtr "ALCMTR.EXE"
Highlight it, press the Delete button and say Yes to the prompt.
Close Spybot S&D

Once you have taken care of those items I think the machine is clean of malware, so if it is still running slow I think there are other reasons for this occurring. Some suggestions for pinning it down:
  • Uninstall unnecessary applications via Start->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs
  • Turn off unnecessary auto-starting applications. Look at your HijackThis log for programs which automatically start - many are listed in the O4 section of the log, and turn of the automatic starting functionality from within the program. Note: Please do not useHijackThis to remove the entries.
  • Use Process Explorer to monitor resources on your system. Run Process Explorer minimized and when a slowdown occurs, switch to the Process Explorer window to see which process is using a high percentage of CPU.
  • Post on a PC troubleshooting forum like PC Pitstop to get more further assistance.

Some further tips to help you keep this computer clean:

You have good protection software installed but do check that it is up to date - ensure antivirus and antispyware programs update automatically and that your firewall is the latest version.

Please take care when downloading programs. One of the easiest ways to be infected is to download freeware/shareware programs which come laden with malware. Before downloading, it is crucial to check whether the source is reputable.
One way to check is to use McAfee SiteAdvisor. Copy the domain name into the space provided and SiteAdvisor will give you a report on the website which can help you decide if it is safe. They also have a toolbar for IE and Firefox which adds this functionality to your browser.
