Unread postby wc » June 17th, 2007, 11:46 pm

My virus scanner (McAfee) found "New Malware.ai" and wasn't able to clean it. Could you help me clean this thing out? Thanks! Here's my hijackthis log:

Hi wc,

First, can you open your antivirus program and check the log for the filename/path of the malware found (e.g. C:\WINDOWS\Virus.exe) - please post the information in your next response.

Next, please do an online scan with Kaspersky:

Open Kaspersky Online Scanner in Internet Explorer

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky,
Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT and then Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
      Scan Archives
      Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:
      Select My Computer
  • The program will start to scan your system.
  • Once the scan is complete, click on the Save as Text button and save the file to your desktop
Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license is accepted, reset to 100%.

Next, please download F-Secure Blacklight
  • Click I ACCEPT and download the graphical user interface version to your Desktop
  • Double click the file to run it, choose I accept the agreement then press Scan
  • It will create the fsbl-xxxxxxx.log on your desktop.
  • The log will have a list of all items found.
  • Do not choose to rename any yet! I want to see the log first because legitimate items can also be present.
  • Exit Blacklight and post the contents of the log in your next reply.
Then, move HijackThis from the desktop to it's own folder:
  • Open My Computer, navigate to C:\ and make a new folder named HJT
  • Move the HijackThis.exe program file from your desktop to C:\HJT
  • If you wish to place a shortcut to HijackThis on your desktop, then right-click hijackthis.exe, select Send To and choose Desktop (create shortcut)

Once complete, please post the details of the malware found, the Kaspersky log, the Blacklight log and a new HijackThis log

Hi wc

You have Viewpoint Media Player installed on your system. This program is not malware but it is foistware in that it is usually installed without the user's knowledge or approval, and for this reason I recommend you remove it. If you actually use this program, I recommend you try using alternatives such as VLC Player or Media Player Classic.
To remove, open Start->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs find Viewpoint Media Player and select Remove

You have a program called WinPcap installed on your computer. Are you aware of this and did you install this intentionally?

Your logs are clean of malware. New Malware.ai is a heuristic detection, this means your antivirus program thinks it found a new virus based on how the file looks or acts - it's also possible that the detection was a false positive.

I'd like you to try uploading the file for testing:
Open http://virusscan.jotti.org/
Copy/paste this file and path into the white box at the top:
c:\QUARANTINE\.vftv1159994453552

Press Submit - this will submit the file for testing.
If your antivirus program gives you a warning, then try to allow the file to be accessed by choosing Ignore or similar.
Please copy and paste the results in your next response.

Have you had any further detection warnings from your antivirus program, or was the detection a one-off?

When complete, please post the Jotti results and a new HijackThis log along with the answers to the questions.

Yeah, I think I remember one day just wondering where Viewpoint suddenly came from, but left it alone. So I've uninstalled that now.

As for WinPcap, no I wasn't aware of the program. Would it be good to remove it?

When I ran another scan with my antivirus program it didn't catch anything, so I guess it was just that one.

Here's the Jotti results:

Hi wc,

WinPcap is a program used to "sniff" network traffic. This has legitimate uses as well as being a hacker tool, for example, it is sometimes installed with wireless network-finding utilities. It's not malware but if you aren't using it then I recommend you remove it via Start->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs

The upload shows the file to be clean, but it might have been encrypted by your antivirus program so we can't be sure. If your machine is working fine and you have had no more detections I think your machine is clean. However, should you get another antivirus detection similar to this one, we would need to pay special attention to it so please pay close attention to any alerts you see.

Some tips to help you keep your computer clean:

Operating system vulnerabilities can easily be exploited by malware so please ensure your operating system is automatically kept up to date by using Windows Update:
Go to Start->Control Panel->Automatic Updates
Select Automatic and select a suitable schedule
Also, check that your antivirus and antispyware programs are set to automatically update daily.

You have a good antivirus program installed, however I recommend you also install antispyware software with real-time capabilities - this means it protects you from system changes and spyware while you are working, not removing malware after it has been installed. There are a range of paid-for and free packages available, a free one I can recommend is Windows Defender, available here:
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/securit ... fault.mspx

You should also consider installing a Personal Firewall program. Even if you are behind a NAT router, I recommend you use firewall software as it will improve the security of your computer by monitoring and controlling outbound connections to the internet as well as inbound. There are various free packages available, such as Sunbelt Personal Firewall and Zone Alarm:
http://www.sunbelt-software.com/Home-Ho ... -Firewall/
http://www.zonelabs.com/

IESPYADS helps protect you from malicious websites by placing a list of known bad websites in Internet Explorer's Restricted Zone. This Zone limits the capabilities of these websites including preventing them from installing software. This will compliment your security software and I recommend you install it:

Consider a custom hosts file such as MVPS HOSTS. This custom hosts file effectively blocks a wide range of unwanted ads, banners, 3rd party Cookies, 3rd party page counters, web bugs, and many hijackers.
For information on how to download and install, please read this tutorial by WinHelp2002
If you install this, be sure to follow the DNS Client service instructions before doing so.

Please take care when downloading programs. One of the easiest ways to be infected is to download freeware/shareware programs which come laden with malware. Before downloading, it is crucial to check whether the source is reputable.
One way to check is to use McAfee SiteAdvisor. Copy the domain name into the space provided and SiteAdvisor will give you a report on the website which can help you decide if it is safe. They also have a toolbar for IE and Firefox which adds this functionality to your browser.

Download and install the free version of WinPatrol. This program protects your computer in a variety of ways and will work well with your existing security software. Have a look at this tutorial to help you get started with the program.

Thanks for your help, Silver!

I was wondering, do you have suggestions for programs to use with a mac? I'm going to be switching over soon.

Hi wc,

Sorry but I've no expertise on the subject so can't help you there. However, please remember security is an issue on every operating system and platform, so I recommend you get expert advice on keeping safe.

Best of luck and I hope you enjoy your new computer!
