Malware Problem

Unread postby annepat » June 13th, 2007, 1:52 pm

Hello there, I wonder if you could help. My son tells me I have malware, and ought to remove it. He has referred something called mywebsearch, and also Smiley Central. He went on to say that it monitors keystrokes, gathers and sells personal data, etc. He is of limited computer ability himself, but, as per Windows XP Magazine, has tried to run Hijack This. We got as far as the following data log, which I have taken the liberty of pasting below:

However, when I double click the icon on my desktop, it merely asks me which program I wish to use to Open it, and asks me which program I want to use to open it. Apparantly I should be able to double click it to execute it. I'm stuck! I'd really appreciate any help you might be able to provide. Thank you.

Hello Anne....welcome to Malware Removal!

We can help you, but you need to something first....

You are using a beta version of HJT....I need you to uninstall the version presently on your computer and then follow the below instructions to download and install the proper version of HJT:

Please do this:

1. Click here to download HJTsetup.exe.
  • Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.
  • Doubleclick on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This
  • Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Addition Tasks dialogue.
  • Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again. Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
  • At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
  • Click on Edit>Select All; then click on Edit>Copy to copy the entire contents of the log.
  • Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
  • DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

2. I also want to see a HJT uninstall list:

Open HijackThis, click Open Misc Tools
Click "Open Uninstall Manager"
Click "Save List" (generates uninstall_list.txt)
Click Save, copy and paste the results in your next post.

3. Post back with the a new HJT log from the newly downloaded/installed version of HJT and hte HJT uninstall list and we can get started....
