hijack this log

Unread postby goffchile » June 11th, 2007, 2:10 pm

Here is my hijackthis log. My internet explorer is running slowly and receiving error messages. I am a victim of "antispywaresolutions" which keeps trying to redirect my browser to their products. I manually removed some of their html files, but am still receiving the error messages. Ran spybot, ad-adware, and Norton--nothing changed. It is only affecting Microsoft IE as far as I can tell.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

goffchile,
-----------------------------------------------------------
Please note that as long as you're using any form of Peer-to-Peer networking (Morpheus, Limewire, etc.) and downloading files from non-documented sources, you can expect infestations of malware to occur.
Once upon a time, P2P file sharing was fairly safe. That is no longer true.
You may decide to continue P2P sharing, but keep in mind that this practice may be the source of your current malware infestation.
Additional information on the safety of Peer to Peer programs themselves is here : http://p2p.malwareremoval.com/
Regardless of the program used, the practice of file-sharing is very unsafe for the health of your PC.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Set Your Computer to Show All Files
  1. Click Start.
  2. Click My Computer.
  3. Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  4. Select the View Tab.
  5. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
  6. Uncheck Hide protected operating system files (recommended).
  7. Click Yes to confirm.
  8. Uncheck the Hide file extensions for known file types.
  9. Click OK.
In addition, go to Start, Search. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that 'Search system folders', 'Search hidden files and folders', and 'Search subfolders' are checked.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Stop Processes Prior to Deletion
Close ALL open windows. Use Ctrl-Alt-Delete together to bring up the task manager.
Under the processes tab, if it is visible, check the box 'Show processes from all users'.
One at a time, highlight each of these that are listed and "End Process":

tmrsrv32.exe
aawservice.exe
SOUNDMAN.EXE

-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove log items with HighjackThis. Start HijackThis.
Click Do System Scan Only. When the Scan is complete, Check the following entries:
(Some of these lines may be missing)

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = about:blank
R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - ~CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497} - (no file)
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [PlantasiaSetup.exe] C:\DOWNLO~1\PLANTA~1.EXE /r
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [updateMgr] C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\Reader\AdobeUpdateManager.exe AcRdB7_0_9
O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present
O16 - DPF: {DF780F87-FF2B-4DF8-92D0-73DB16A1543A} (PopCapLoader Object) - http://zone.msn.com/bingame/popcaploader_v10.cab

Make sure Every other window except HJT is closed (No other tabs showing in the bottom tray), and Click Fix Checked.
-----------------------------------------------------------
File Deletion.
In Windows Explorer (My Computer), navigate to the file shown below, select View, Details, and Delete the item, if found.
Be careful not to delete any file without double-checking the spelling of the filename.

C:\Windows\System32\tmrsrv32.exe

If you have any problem deleting a file, right click the file and check Properties to see if it's read-only. Uncheck the read-only box, click Apply and OK. Then retry Delete.

If a message pops up saying "File in use", or something like that, hit Ctrl-Alt-Delete and look under the Processes tab. If the filename is in there, highlight it and click End Process, then retry Delete.
Note if you cannot delete.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Post a New HJT Log
Reboot your computer. Start HijackThis. Click Do System Scan and Save a Log File.
When the Scan is complete, select the whole log (Ctrl-A), copy and paste the log contents in a reply.

That copy of HiJackThis is a Beta version. We are not using it yet for detailed analysis.
------------------------------------------------
Download HijackThis to your Desktop or to your usual Download Folder.
http://downloads.malwareremoval.com/HJTsetup.exe

Double click on HJTSetup.exe, and by default it should install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This
Continue through the setup and let it create a Desktop Icon.
Follow all the prompts, click Finish, and let the installer start HijackThis.
Click the Do a System Scan and Save a Log File option.
Notepad will open with the Hijackthis log
Please copy and post its contents here.
Do not rename Hijackthis, and please turn OFF wordwrap in Notepad (under the Format menu item).

goffchile,
Thanks for the new log.
The log does not show much that should be causing the problem, except that you do have quite a few competing Browser Helper Objects.
Between Earthlink, Google, Yahoo and Symantec, you have a lot of competing interests. You also have a McAfee connection wizard running.

Two of them use the name of "antispywaresolutions"

Can you tell me which you can give up and we will remove them as a start?

Earthlink has also set itself as the URL search Hook.
Please tell me which Internet Provider you use, and mention your status vis-a-vis AOL.

One more thing - can you give me any more info about the "antispywaresolutions" purveyor? It's such a generic term that it's not easily identified.

This is what I know

Unread postby goffchile » June 15th, 2007, 8:14 am

I currently use Symantec as my antivirus software. Earthlink is my internet provider. I uninstalled McAfee some time ago, but apparently there is some residual stuff on there. I primarily use Google as my search mechanism. You can get rid of yahoo, AOL, and Mcafee--all are residuals of previous services.

Since this whole incident, I have been using Opera as my browser instead of MIE and will probably continue to do so, but I still don't want any malware on computer if I can avoid it.

Regarding the "antispywaresolutions." The malware was designed to attach itself to Microsoft IE, then direct you to a website entitled "antispywaresolutions"---where you would presumably type in your credit card number to "buy" antispyware to get rid of the spyware that they placed on your computer. It also would constantly provide bubbles warning you of spyware, turn your display red, etc. When I ran Spybot, it identified some malware called "smitfraud-C"--and the its description matched what I was experiencing, I don't know if that helps you.

After searching, I found the main htmls on my computer and manually deleted them (perhaps a mistake) and since it is no longer there, I recieve the following error messages--

Cannot find 'file:///C:/Windows/system32/drivers/s_detect.htm' Make sure path or Internet connection is correct.

and

Cannot find 'file:///C:/Windows/system32/drivers/detect.htm' Make sure path or Internet connection is correct.

This happens whenever I open MIE and periodically while browsing. The other symptoms (warning bubbles, display color change) no longer occur.

Hope this helps.

goffchile,
Thanks for the info. That helps a lot.
This is quite a bit to do, but should be straightforward.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Stop Processes Prior to Deletion
Close ALL open windows. Use Ctrl-Alt-Delete together to bring up the task manager.
Under the processes tab, if it is visible, check the box 'Show processes from all users'.
Highlight these items, one at a time, and "End Process":

aawservice.exe
AOLSoftware.exe
aoltsmon.exe
AOLAcsd.exe

-----------------------------------------------------------
Use Add/Remove Programs In Control Panel
From Start, Settings, Control Panel or Start, Control Panel, click Add/Remove Programs.
Highlight each Entry, as follows, one by one, if it exists, and choose Remove :

AOL
AOL xxx anything
Yahoo!
Yahoo Companion
Yahoo Toolbar

Take extra care in answering questions posed by any Uninstaller. Some questions may be worded to deceive you into Keeping the program.
Don't reboot during the uninstalls if you don't have to.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Stop, Disable Service
Go to Start, Run OR Start, Programs, Accessories, Command Prompt and type Services.msc and click OK.
Under the Extended Tab, Scroll down and find this service.
(The Service could be missing if the Uniinstall routine worked)
AOL ACS
Click once on the service to highlight it.
Right-Click on the service. Click on Properties
Select the General tab.
Next to Service Status, click Stop.
Click the Arrow-down tab on the right-hand side of the Start-up Type box.
From the drop-down menu, click on Disabled
Click Apply , then OK[/quote]
Repeat the Above procedure for the Service named AOL TopSpeedMonitor
-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove log items with HighjackThis. Start HijackThis.
Click Do System Scan Only. When the Scan is complete, Check the following entries:
(Some of these lines may be missing)
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Connection Wizard,ShellNext = http://us.mcafee.com/root/regwizard/Reg ... 20@aol.com
O2 - BHO: Yahoo! Toolbar Helper - {02478D38-C3F9-4EFB-9B51-7695ECA05670} - C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\Companion\Installs\cpn\yt.dll

O3 - Toolbar: Yahoo! Toolbar - {EF99BD32-C1FB-11D2-892F-0090271D4F88} - C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\Companion\Installs\cpn\yt.dll

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MSMSGS] "C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe" /background
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [swg] C:\Program Files\Google\GoogleToolbarNotifier\GoogleToolbarNotifier.exe
O23 - Service: AOL Connectivity Service (AOL ACS) - America Online - C:\Program Files\Common Files\AOL\ACS\AOLAcsd.exe
O23 - Service: AOL TopSpeed Monitor (AOL TopSpeedMonitor) - America Online, Inc - C:\Program Files\Common Files\AOL\TopSpeed\2.0\aoltsmon.exe

Make sure Every other window except HJT is closed (No other tabs showing in the bottom tray), and Click Fix Checked.
-----------------------------------------------------------
File and Folder Deletion.
In Windows Explorer (My Computer), navigate to the files/ folders shown below, select View, Details, and Delete the listed items, if found.
In the case of a folder removal, as here, you may have to delete all the underlying files and folders before an entire folder can be deleted.

C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\ <== this entire folder
C:\Program Files\Common Files\\AOL\ <== this entire folder

Note the name and location of any item you cannot delete.
------------------------------------------------------
Reboot your computer.
------------------------------------------------------
Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
Alternative site is here : http://downloads.securitycadets.com/SmitfraudFix.exe
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"
A text file will appear which lists infected files (if present).

Please copy/paste the content of that text file report into your next reply.

Note : process.exe is one of the tools used here to help fix your computer. It is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool". It is not a virus, or a malicious file, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

-----------------------------------------------------------
Post a New HJT Log
Start HijackThis. Click Do System Scan and Save a Log File.

When the Scan is complete, select the whole log (Ctrl-A), copy and paste the log contents in a reply along with the report from SmitfraudFix.

goffchile,
A couple more investigations.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Download ATF Cleaner by Atribune © from here : http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=1
It is a stand-alone program that does not need to be "installed". Save it to a convenient location and make a shortcut on your desktop.

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe or your shortcut to run the program.
Under Main, choose Select All
Click Empty Selected

If you use Firefox browser,
Click Firefox at the top and choose Select All
Click on Empty Selected
NOTE: If you would like to keep any saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit to close.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Download Blacklight Beta from here:
https://europe.f-secure.com/exclude/blacklight/fsbl.exe
* Download fsbl.exe and save it to the C:\
* Once saved... double click blbeta.exe to install the program.
Go to Start-->Run, copy in the following text and press Enter:
C:\fsbl.exe /expert
(space between fsbl.exe and /expert)

Accept the agreement, leave [X]scan through Windows Explorer checked.
Click > scan, Then > next
You'll see a list of all items found.
Don't choose Rename if something was found!
Exit Blacklight.
There will be a log in C:\ with the name fsbl.xxxxxxx.log (the xxxxxxx stand for numbers).
Copy and paste the contents of this log into your next reply.

-----------------------------------------------------
Using Internet Explorer, Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner from here : http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner
Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner
You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
* The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
* Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
* Now click on Scan Settings
* In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
o Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
Extended (if available otherwise Standard)

o Scan Options:
Scan Archives
Scan Mail Bases

* Click OK
* Now under select a target to scan:
Select My Computer
* This will program will start and scan your system.
* The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.

* Copy and paste that information in your next post.

Okay--Did the reports--they are below. I have used MIE several times in the past few days and have not received any error messages or other problems--so I think that this is a good sign. Depending on what you read in this reports, we may be out of the woods.

goffchile,
Making progress.
Please try to do this promptly. These are downloaders that will fill your PC with garbage.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Stop Processes Prior to Deletion
Close ALL open windows. Use Ctrl-Alt-Delete together to bring up the task manager.
Under the processes tab, if it is visible, check the box 'Show processes from all users'.
One at a time, highlight each of these two files listed and "End Process":

msorcl32.exe
~.exe
<== note this file is named with a tilde~
-----------------------------------------------------------
File Deletion.
In Windows Explorer (My Computer), navigate to the folder shown below, select View, Details, highlight each listed file only, one at a time, and press Delete.
Be careful not to delete any file without double-checking the exact spelling of the filename.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\msorcl32.exe <== this file only
C:\WINDOWS\system32\wmvds32.dll <== this file only
C:\WINDOWS\system32\~.exe <== this file only, named with a tilde~ as a .exe

If you have any problem deleting a file, right click the file and choose Properties to see if it's read-only. Uncheck the read-only box, click Apply and OK. Then retry Delete.
Please Note the name and location of any item you cannot delete, or any file not found.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Disable WinXP System Restore
Disable your System Restore to remove malware files that have been backed up by Windows.
The only way to erase the infected files saved in your System Restore is to temporarily disable System Restore. You will lose all previous restore points, including the infected ones.
- Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
- On the System Restore tab, put a Check mark in the Turn Off System Restore check box.
- Click OK twice, and then click Yes when you are prompted to restart the computer.
If you are not prompted to reboot, do it on your own.
-----------------------------------------------------------
After the Reboot,
Enable WinXP System Restore
- Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
- On the System Restore tab, Clear the Check mark beside the Turn Off System Restore check box.
- Click OK twice, and then click Yes when you are prompted to restart the computer.
The Disable/Re-enable System Restore sequence is not to be done regularly, but only once after the removal of malware.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Post a New HJT Log
Start HijackThis. Click Do System Scan and Save a Log File.
When the Scan is complete, select the whole log (Ctrl-A), copy and paste the log contents in a reply.

The processes weren't running when I checked, but I was still able to do the deletions. Also, the system restore now reads "monitoring"--I hope that is correct.

Here is the new log.

It is correct that your System restore should report "Monitoring".
Your log looks clean.
Just a few items to tidy up and improve your security a bit going forward.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Using My Computer, navigate to your HiJackThis backups folder here, and delete all the contents.
C:\Program Files\Hijackthis\backups\

Also delete this file. We don't need it any more: C:\fsbl.exe

Also delete any SmitfraudFix folders on your desktop.

Install WinPatrol - Download and Install WinPatrol, and view Instructions here: http://www.winpatrol.com/winpatrol.html
- WinPatrol is an active program that drops a "Scotty Dog" icon into the system tray (right click to check/change status), allows you to monitor/edit startups, services, Browser helpers, and prompts for permission if any program tries to change your system. It also provides selective cookie management.

Download and Install a HOSTS File
A Hosts file is a plain text file which prevents your computer from inadvertently connecting to malware, spyware and adware sites by redirecting the connection request back to your own machine address (127.0.0.1). It is a very effective defense system.
If you use a proxy server, or if you are on AOL, or if you use Norton to scan e-mail, be sure to read the special instructions in the tutorial below..

Be sure to disable the service "DNS Client" FIRST to allow the use of large HOSTS files without slowdowns.
If this isn't done first, the next reboot may take a VERY LONG TIME.
This is how to do it. First be sure you are signed in as a user with administrative privileges:
Stop and Disable the DNS Client Service
Go to Start, Run and type Services.msc and click OK.
Under the Extended Tab, Scroll down and find this service.
DNS Client
Right-Click on the DNS Client Service. Choose Properties
Select the General tab. Click on the Stop button.
Click the Arrow-down tab on the right-hand side at the Start-up Type box.
From the drop-down menu, click on Manual
Click the Apply tab, then click OK

Download BlueTack's HOSTS Manager here:
http://www.bluetack.co.uk/forums/index.php?act=dscript&CODE=showdetails&f_id=5
If you download and install it first, then click Download.
When it finishes, click Replace, and then Save.
You can use this manager to handle your HOSTS file download, edits, and most any other HOSTS issue.

Read an excellent instruction about HOSTS files (the Bluetack version) here:
http://www.bluetack.co.uk/forums/index.php?showtopic=8406

If you have a firewall, you may have to give permission to Unlock the present default HOSTS file before you copy / install the new one.
You may also have to give additional permission during installation of the new one.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You can see another HOSTS file tutorial here : http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm
and choose to download the MVPS HOSTS File instead of using the BlueTack HOSTS.
The BlueTack version (70k+ entries) is more aggressive than the mvps (11k + entries), and targets adware sites as well as more dangerous ones.
