Malware driving me mad

Unread postby redbarron » June 7th, 2007, 11:26 am

I am completely new to this site, so I appologise in advance if I am in the wrong section.

Since downloading some rubbish the other day(my own fault I know) I am constantly getting bombarded with advertising malware popping up, even when not connected to the net. I already have a pop up blocker, but it does not seem to be helping with everything. Sometimes the advert shows, other times the screen just keeps flashing.

The other thing that happens is, when typing something, I look up at to see what I have typed only to see that it has frozen and not completed the line of text.

I have Norton Antivirus 2007, which I checked for latest updates and ran a full scan, but it didn't show up anything.

I have already run a host of spyware and malware programs which did show up loads of trojan stuff but has'nt fixed the problem. I'm getting to the point of thinking *od it and doing a complete reinstall of windows.

Hope you can help.

Hi I am Elrond.

I will try to help you.
The first thing we need is a HijackThis log so that we can start analysing what you have on your computer.

Use this link to get HijackThis.
Save it to your desktop and then double-click to run it.
It will install the program in c:\program files\HijackThis.
Browse to that location with windows explorer, and double click on the HijackThis.exe program to run. Choose the 'Do a system scan and save a logfile'
That will allow you to save the log to the desktop (or some other place) and leave open a notepad file with the HijackThis log in it.

Now post your HijackThis log into this topic. Use Ctrl+C to copy it to the clipboard and then post it to this topic with Ctrl+V.

We will take it from there. If there is anything you are unsure of please ask.

Any update yet

Unread postby redbarron » June 8th, 2007, 6:55 am

Hi Elrond,

Just enquiring to see if there has been any progress.

I hope you can come up with a fix soon, as I am getting fed up with the constant adverts, text freezing when typing, internet connection starting up each time on it's own and even web pages that I am viewing being suddenly closed intermitantly.

Fingers crossed.

Thank you.

Hi redbarron

Sorry for not answering you before. I had some serious problems with my E-mail related to a server change and I never got the information that you had answered. :(

You are now on my list of active logs so hopefuly it should not happen again.

Go to http://virusscan.jotti.org or to http://www.virustotal.com/en/indexf.html
Put this line into the white textbox:
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\mim40u.dll

Click Submit.

Please post the results of this scan to this thread

Repeat for the following

c:\windows\system32\jkhgfdd.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\tmp94.tmp.dll

Next I would like you to Open "HijackThis". Click on "Open Misc.Tool Section".
Use the scroll bar on the right and scroll down to "Open Uninstall Manager". Click it.
On the right you will find "Save List". Click it.
The log that you just saved will appear.
Use "Copy" and "Paste" to add it to your next post.

1. Download combofix from one of these links:
Link1
Link2
2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Please do a new HijackThis scan and post the results from Jotti or Virustoal together with the logs from "Uninstall Manager", Combofix, and HijackThis.

Hi Elrond,

Hope these results help. I don't know if I mentioned it earlier, but my internet connection also keeps auto connecting and not showing a program that it is connected to. Could this also be linked to my Malware nightmare?

Update

Unread postby redbarron » June 18th, 2007, 9:51 am

Hi Elrond,

I don't know if it is just coincidence, but since running the 'Combofix' software, all normality seems to have returned. No constant advertising pop up's and no auto internet connecting or text freezing.

It can't be that simple, surely :?

From all the data I sent you, there must be something that needs attention.

Perhaps I'm just being led into a sense of false security. Fingers crossed I'm not :)

Until proven otherwise I remain the pessimist.

Look forward to hearing from you.

Regards

So far so good. :) However there is still more to do.:(

  1. Please download Brute Force Uninstaller to your desktop.
    • Right click the BFU folder on your desktop, and choose Extract All
    • Click "Next"
    • In the box to choose where to extract the files to,
    • Click "Browse"
    • Click on the + sign next to "My Computer"
    • Click on "Local Disk (C:) or whatever your primary drive is
    • Click "Make New Folder"
    • Type in BFU
    • Click "Next", and Uncheck the "Show Extracted Files" box and then click "Finish".
    3. RIGHT-CLICK HERE and choose "Save As" (in IE it's "Save Target As") in order to download Alcra PLUS Remover.
Save it in the same folder you made earlier (c:\BFU).

Do not do anything with these yet!
  2. Now close all programs leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following, making sure you get them all and not any others by mistake:

    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =

    O20 - AppInit_DLLs: c:\windows\system32\jkhgfdd.dll
    O23 - Service: DomainService - Unknown owner - C:\Documents and Settings\Stephen Hunt\Application Data\tmp8.tmp.exe (file missing)

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.
  3. Restart the into Safe Mode:
Restart the computer. When the BIOS has finished loading (before Windows starts loading) start rapidly tapping the "F8". A menu opens. Select "Safe Mode". The computer will start in safe mode.
This can be tricky. If Windows starts up in normal mode, repeat the process. If you have a keyboard with a "F Lock" key click it so that the "F" light above it is on when you start tapping the "F8" key. The startup in safe mode takes some time and while it is doing so it shows you a black screen with the words "Safe Mode"
  4. Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files and delete them (Let me know if you can not find them. It is noprblem but it is important for me to know):

    C:\WINDOWS\yaxvuv.dll
    c:\windows\system32\jkhgfdd.dll
    C:\Documents and Settings\Stephen Hunt\Application Data\tmp8.tmp.exe (file missing)

  5. Then, please go to Start > My Computer and navigate to the C:\BFU folder.
    • Start the Brute Force Uninstaller by doubleclicking BFU.exe
    • Behind the scriptline to execute field click the folder icon Image and select alcanshorty.bfu
    • Press Execute and let the program do it’s job. (You ought to see a progress bar if you did this correctly.)
    • Wait for the complete script execution box to pop up and press OK.
    • Press exit to terminate the BFU program.
  6. Do a new HijackThis scan and post the log.

Hi Elrond,

Hunted high and low for the following file, but cannot find them.

C:\WINDOWS\yaxvuv.dll
c:\windows\system32\jkhgfdd.dll
C:\Documents and Settings\Stephen Hunt\Application Data\tmp8.tmp.exe (file missing)

Clarification Please for Brute Force and Alcra Plus location

Unread postby redbarron » June 19th, 2007, 7:58 am

Right click the BFU folder on your desktop, and choose Extract All.

When I right click there is nothing in the drop down menu that says 'Extract All'.

So what I have done is creat a folder manually in 'My Computer' C: and named it BFU and placed the two files there.

The trouble is, when looking at you're instructions at the end about 'double clicking BFU.exe' there is no exe.

Is it just a case of double clicking the alcanshorty file in the folder and let it do it's thng?

Sorry about your hunting high and low for those files. They are probably deleted. No problem.

We will check if we need to make that pesky program run.

Try this:

Limewire is a filesharing program. In itself it is clean but any file-sharing program is a risk. In reality, your computer is being used by others and you have no idea if the files you download are clean. It is a major vector for spreading malware. If you want to keep it I will have to ask not to use it while we are cleaning up the computor. My recomendation is to remove it but that decision is up to you.

  1. Use the Add/Remove Programs to remove Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.1_07.
    1. Click on Start.
    2. Click on Control Panel.
    3. If you need to, click on "Switch to classic view"
    4. Double-click on the Add/Remove Programs icon.
    5. Select the Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.1_07 Application if you find it.
    6. Click on the Add/Remove button.

If you decide to remove Limewire then
  2. repeat point 5 and 6 above for LimeWire PRO 4.12.6
  3. Once the program has uninstalled, click on the OK button.

Reboot the computer.

Download SDFix and save it to your desktop.

Run SDFix
  • In Safe Mode, right click the SDFix.zip folder and choose Extract All,
  • Open the extracted folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the script.
  • It will remove the Trojan Services then make some repairs to the registry and prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • Your system will take longer that normal to restart as the fixtool will be running and removing files.
  • When the desktop loads the Fixtool will complete the removal and display Finished, then press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Finally open the SDFix folder on your desktop and copy and paste the contents of the results file Report.txt back onto the forum with a new HijackThis log

Please run Combofix again.

Run another HijackThis scan and post the logs from SDFix, Combofix and HijackThis.
