Unkown Virus slowing down computer

Unread postby utdarkviper » March 20th, 2007, 12:47 am

I ran tests and they found nothing... Freedom AntiVirus alerts me of a virus every time I start up my computer and I have been noticing that my computer takes a bit longer to load things and it has frozen a few times. Freedom lists the virus as D:\SYSTEM VOLUME INFORMATION\_RESTORE{46DE8921-1D39-44D2-A9E9-64119261F211}\FIFOED\A0009633.EXE but I cannot find this anywhere and when I scan my computer with Freedom it does not find it after this initial startup alert. Please help!

Hello utdarkviper and Welcome to Malware Removal,

It appears that you have an infected _restore file. But we never tell victims to clear their restore points until the end, after we see a hijackthis log and make sure the system is clean. Reason is that if we need the person to do a restore because of a terrible situation during the cleaning, restoring back to an infected restore point is better than having nothing at all to restore to.

So please post (reply) with a hijackthis log so we can check things over first.

I do not know all the scans you have run but please humor me and run a Kapersky scan.

Disable SpywareGuard:
You have SpywareGuard installed. While this is a great program, we need to temporarily disable (not uninstall) the program because it might stop our fix.
  • Right click the running icon ofSpywareGuard, it will open the program.
  • Then go to Menu, file, exit.
  • Then confirm the program is closed.

Disable Microsoft Windows Defender:
We need to disable your Microsoft Windows Defender Real-time Protection as it may interfere with the fixes that we need to make.
  • Open Microsoft Windows Defender. Click Start, Programs, Windows Defender
  • Click on Tools, General Settings.
  • Under Real-time protection options, unselect the Turn on real-time protection check box
  • Click Save
After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable Windows Defender Real-time Protection and you enable SpywareGuard again.

Scan with HijackThis. Place a check against each of the following:
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = \blank.htm

Close all windows or browsers except for Hijackthis. Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Now run this online scan using Internet Explorer:
Kaspersky Online Scanner from http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner

* Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan
Next Click on Launch Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
  • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
  • Standard
  • Scan Options:
  • Scan Archives
  • Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:
  • Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
  • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.

Copy and paste that information from Kapersky in your next post.

**Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license is accepted, reset to 100%.

Post (reply) with a fresh HijackThis log and the Kapersky log.

Kaspersky trouble

Unread postby utdarkviper » March 20th, 2007, 11:47 am

I tried to run the check with internet explorer 7.0 and when I try to install the ActiveX control it opens the privacy policy again. Any suggestions as to how to continue with this online check?

P.S. - I strongly dislike Internet Explorer.

Kaspersky trouble part 2

Unread postby utdarkviper » March 20th, 2007, 12:16 pm

After I fooled with IE settings I was able to finally install the ActiveX but the next step failed...

Please wait to update the virus definitions...

Let’s try Panda. This scan works with Internet Explorer. Please also do Step 2 whether you get Panda to work or not.

STEP 1.
======
Panda Active Scan
Please go to Panda ActiveScan.
Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
A new window will open...click the Check Now button
  • Enter your Country
  • Enter your State/Province
  • Enter your e-mail address and click send
  • Select either Home User or Company
  • Click the big Scan Now button
  • If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
  • It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
  • When download is complete, click on Local Disks to start the scan
  • When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location.
Post the contents of the Panda scan report using Add Reply.

STEP 2.
======
Deckard’s System Scanner

Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop. Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.
  1. Close all applications and windows.
  2. Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  3. When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt<-this one will be minimized
  4. Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt and the extra.txt to your reply.

Hello utdarkviper,

Your scans appeared to be clean. So let's clear the restore points.

STEP 1.
======
System Restore for Windows XP
Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected)
    Turn off System Restore.
  1. On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
    *] Click Properties.
  2. Click the System Restore tab.
  3. Check Turn off System Restore.
  4. Click Apply, and then click OK.
Reboot.

Turn ON System Restore.
  1. On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
  2. Click Properties.
  3. Click the System Restore tab.
  4. UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
  5. Click Apply, and then click OK.

Now please tell me if the error you were receiving goes away.
Freedom lists the virus as D:\SYSTEM VOLUME INFORMATION\_RESTORE{46DE8921-1D39-44D2-A9E9-64119261F211}\FIFOED\A0009633.EXE

If you no longer have any problems, I will give you the final instructions to help keep malware-free.

Okay I followed your instructions and it seems my computer isn't showing the message anymore! My computer has been on for an hour now and it still hasn't shown up. Thank you for your help! Anything else for me to do?

This is from the Security Center.
FW: Freedom Firewall v??3??????4? (Adelphia)
AV: Freedom Anti-Virus v??3??????4????????†????a (Adelphia)

You should only have one firewall application and one antivirus application iinstalled but I do not see any unless I missed something. Please install a
firewall and anti-virus application.

  1. Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

See this link for a listing of some online & their stand-alone antivirus programs:
Virus, Spyware, and Malware Protection and Removal Resources

  2. Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  3. Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.
For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:
    Understanding and Using Firewalls

  4. Test your Firewall - Please test your firewall and make sure it is working properly.
    Test Firewall

Please post (reply) with another hijackthis log.

Did you test your firewall? What anti-virus program are you using? I see no difference in the hijackthis logs.

Okay, are you using the Adelphia Freedom then?

Create a new folder on the desktop.
Copy the contents of this next code box to Notepad.
Name the file inspect.bat
Save as Type: All files
Save in that new folder on the desktop.

Double click on inspect.bat and let it run.
When finished it will open a file in Notepad.
That file will be named lsa.txt
Please post the contents of lsa.txt into your next reply here.

Yes, I tested my firewall and it showed results saying that either it couldn't find it or some other stuff I didn't understand about proxys and I figured that it couldn't check properly because my internet connection runs through my college.
The Anti-Virus program and firewall I'm using is Freedom. I double-checked and it is on and working from the looks of it.
I did what you said with the file but it didn't work properly and displayed the following:

Cannot export files\4.txt: Error opening the file. There may be a disk or file system error.
Cannot export files\5.txt: Error opening the file. There may be a disk or file system error.
Cannot export files\7.txt: Error opening the file. There may be a disk or file system error.
Cannot export files\8.txt: Error opening the file. There may be a disk or file system error.
Cannot export files\9.txt: Error opening the file. There may be a disk or file system error.
Cannot export files\10.txt: Error opening the file. There may be a disk or file system error.
Cannot export files\13.txt: Error opening the file. There may be a disk or file system error.
The system cannot find the path specified.

--Then it opens a blank Notepad file "Untitled".
The code I put into the file is as follows:

-----
Code: Select all
If not exist Files MkDir Files

regedit /a /e files\2.txt HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\OLE
regedit /a /e files\3.txt HKEY_CURRENT_USER\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa
regedit /a /e files\4.txt HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Ole
regedit /a /e files\5.txt HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa
regedit /e /a files\6.txt HKEY_USERS\DEFAULT\SYSTEM\CURRENTCONTROLSET\CONTROL\LSA
regedit /a /e files\7.txt "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Security Center"
regedit /a /e files\8.txt "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Security Center"
Regedit /a /e files\9.txt HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies
Regedit /a /e files\10.txt HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies
Regedit /a /e files\11.txt HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\WindowsFirewall
Regedit /a /e files\12.txt HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Policies\WindowsFirewall
regedit /a /e files\13.txt HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\SharedAccess\Parameters
regedit /a /e files\14.txt HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\Services\SharedAccess

Copy files\*.txt = lsa.txt
rmdir /s /q files
Start Notepad lsa.txt
