Unread postby wakeboarder540 » March 19th, 2007, 11:44 am

someone brought a computer to me to fix and it has a 2 Ghz processor and 256mb RAM on windows XP, it takes forever to boot up and to open things up.

the person also had problems with the language, certain windows would display weird characters that were probably korean or japanese or something... i changed the language setting in the control panel but i want to make sure that all the language settings are at default (US english) is there a reset to default button fro language somewhere?

here is the HJT log

Hi wakeboarder540

"someone brought a computer to me to fix and it has a 2 Ghz processor and 256mb RAM on windows XP"

Here is most likely biggest problem, too little RAM. I would double it or triple.

Has user uninstalled Norton?

by the looks of things norton is not installed, although in the add/remove progrmas it says a Norton WMI update is installed

no offense... but i would have to disagree with the 256 mb of ram being the problem, because ive used XP on a machine with 128 mb of ram for years and it wasnt too slow

but this computer is really slow at startup, its almost like its loading like 100 programs at start up

im running an online scan kaspersky right now
after the scan ill take a look in msconfig to see what progrmas that are run at startup

Depends on startup programs of course, there's too many of them to that 256 mb of RAM.

Ok, post then kaspersky report and a fresh HijackThis log, please :)

These are that kind of that I'd suggest to disable (of course users choice in the end):

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [PrinTray] C:\WINDOWS\System32\spool\DRIVERS\W32X86\2\printray.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [UserFaultCheck] %systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 -u
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] "C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_11\bin\jusched.exe"
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Microsoft Works Update Detection] C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Works Shared\WkUFind.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [swg] C:\Program Files\Google\GoogleToolbarNotifier\1.2.1128.5462\GoogleToolbarNotifier.exe
O4 - Global Startup: Adobe Reader Speed Launch.lnk = C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\Reader\reader_sl.exe
O4 - Global Startup: Kodak EasyShare software.lnk = C:\Program Files\Kodak\Kodak EasyShare software\bin\EasyShare.exe
O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\OSA.EXE

This might also be useful.

If there's no Norton anymore, you should then run this tool and after that install a firewall:

Looking over your log, it seems you don't have any evidence of a third party firewall.

As the term conveys, a firewall is an extra layer of security installed onto computers, which restricts access to systems from the outside world. Firewalls protect against hackers and malicious intruders. I want you to download a free firewall NOW from one of these excellent vendors:

1) ZoneAlarm
2) Agnitum
3) Sunbelt/Kerio
4) Comodo

If you are using the built-in Windows XP firewall, it is not recommended as it does not block outgoing connections. This means that any malware on your computer is free to "phone home" for more instructions. Simply put, Windows XP contains a mediocre firewall. This firewall is NO replacement for a dedicated software solution. Remember to use only one firewall at the same time.

After those steps, please post a fresh HijackThis log :)
