Slow performance and browser pop-ups

Unread postby marksbaker » February 16th, 2007, 6:10 am

Recently I tried to remove the McAfee installation supplied with a new Dell laptop and install Trend Micro's PC-Cillin. During this time it looks like I picked up some unwanted software and the laptop runs very slow at times and unwanted browser sessions open normally to sites like winantivirus. I have tried various clean ups but have not been successfull yet. Any help would be gratefully received. Thank you. here is the HJT log.

Hi! :hello2: and welcome to the Malware Removal forums.
My name is John Brouwer - if it helps, you can call me John for short. I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

HijackThis logs can take some time to research, so please be patient with me. I know that you need
your computer working as quickly as possible, and I will work hard to help see that happens.
I am currently looking over your log. As I am a trainee, everything that I post to you must be checked by an Admin or Moderator. Thus, there may be a tiny bit of a delay between posts, but it shouldn't be too long. I will post back shortly with a potential fix.

Please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:
  • I will working be on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
  • Finally, please make a uninstall list using HijackThis
    To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:

    1. Start HijackThis
    2. Click on the Config button
    3. Click on the Misc Tools button
    4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.

    You will now be presented with a screen similar to the one below:

    Image

    5. Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad here in a reply.

Greets, John.

Hi marksbaker,

Step 1: Make the Uninstall log
Only if you haven't made it yet please make the Uninstall log as I instructed you in my Welcome speech because you won't be able to save one after renaming HijackThis.

Step 2: Rename HijackThis
There are three possibilities:
1. You've edited the first log
2. One of the very well-known infection is hiding part
3. You've got a very strange pc
It's probably #2 so please rename hijackthis.exe to goodscanner.exe to unhide the entries.

Step 3: Upload a File to Virustotal
Please visit Virustotal
* Click the Browse... button
* Navigate to the file C:\Program Files\iolo\Common\Lib\ioloDMVSvc.exe
* Click the Open button
* Click the Send button
* Save the results in a notepad file
* Also scan this file C:\WINDOWS\system32\hkkjwvhc.dll and save it too

Step 4: Post logs
* Virustotal results
* The Uninstall log (if you haven't posted it yet)
* Fresh HJT log
* Tell me if you removed McAfee already because I can see some possible leftovers
* Tell me if you set these restrictions yourself or if it's a computer from you work:
O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions present
O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present
O6 - HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions present
O6 - HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present

Thanks for the instructions, as I am working at present I will be unable to post the logs until the evening.
secondly, I removed McAfee using Advanced uninstaller pro 2006 as it refused to be removed through the control panel.
The restrictions were not placed by me and as this is a personal not work laptop, if they should be removed your help would be appreciated.
I will post the logs later, thanks in advance

Hi again,
I found some time and started with HJT. When I get as far as the last section (5) in your list, pressing Save List... causes HJT to close down immediatley.
Should I continue with the rest of the instrtuctions or do you need this list first?

Hi,

If you mean the Uninstall log please don't do that step and do all the others.

VirusTotal is a free service offered by Hispasec Sistemas. There are no guarantees about the availability and continuity of this service. Although the detection rate afforded by the use of multiple antivirus engines is far superior to that offered by just one product, these results DO NOT guarantee the harmlessness of a file. Currently, there is not any solution that offers a 100% effectiveness rate for detecting viruses and malware.

As I said earlier, I have removed as much McAfee as it would allow me to do using Advanced Uninstaller Pro 2006. I have seen some remainder but don't know how to remove it!
The HJT 06 restrictions were not set by me and it's not a work laptop, it's my own.

Hi marksbaker,

I can now clearly see your infection, lets try to remove it.

Step 1: Download and Run VundoFix
Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once the scan is complete, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove.
In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button." when VundoFix appears at reboot.

Step 2: Delete McAfee service
Please copy (Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the following text in the quote to Notepad. Save it as "All Files" and name it FixServices.bat Please save it on your desktop.

@echo off
sc stop mcupdmgr.exe
sc delete mcupdmgr.exe
exit

Double click FixServices.bat. A window will open and close. This is normal.

Step 3: Remove HijackThis entries
  • Run HijackThis
  • Click on the Scan button
  • Put a check beside all of the items listed below (if present):

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [DllRunning] rundll32.exe "C:\WINDOWS\system32\hkkjwvhc.dll",setvm

    O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions present
    O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present
    O6 - HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions present
    O6 - HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present

    O23 - Service: McAfee SecurityCenter Update Manager (mcupdmgr.exe) - McAfee, Inc - C:\PROGRA~1\McAfee.com\Agent\mcupdmgr.exe

  • Close all open windows and browsers/email, etc...
  • Click on the "Fix Checked" button
  • When completed, close the application.
Step 4: Show your hidden files
To enable the viewing of Hidden files follow these steps:
  • Close all programs so that you are at your desktop.
  • Double-click on the My Computer icon (or click Start, then select My Computer)
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • After the new window appears select the View tab.
  • Put a checkmark in the checkbox labeled Display the contents of system folders.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders section select the radio button labeled Show hidden files and folders.
  • Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide file extensions for known file types.
  • Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide protected operating system files.
  • Press the Apply button and then the OK button and shutdown My Computer.
    Now your computer is configured to show all hidden files.

Step 5: Delete file and folder
Use Explorer to navigate to and delete the following file and folder (if present):

C:\Program Files\McAfee.com

C:\WINDOWS\system32\hkkjwvhc.dll

Now just exit Explorer.

Step 5: Post logs
* C:\vundofix.txt
* Fresh HJT log

From your last post, steps 1 & 2 ok but when trying to use Kaspersky Online Scan the activex component will not download. The browser stops it and when I click allow activex install it forwards to a text page about kaspersky and does not download the component.
the pc appears to be normal now.
thanks

Hi,

I know your system is clean from Vundo but there might be a virus/trojan left so that's why I ask you to do a scan. Please try Panda.

Step 1: Run Panda Online Scan
Run Panda's ActiveScan from here and perform a full system scan.
- Once you are on the Panda site click the "Scan your PC" button
- A new window will open...click the big "Check Now" button
- Enter your Country
- Enter your State/Province
- Enter your e-mail address and click send
- Select either Home User or Company
- Click the big Scan Now button
- If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
- It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It will take a couple minutes)
- Click on "Local Disks" to start the scan
- Save the log file to your desktop

Step 2: Post logs
- Panda log
- HJT log
