ok, after another reboot...the desktop is back. but everything seems to take 1-2 minutes to load up, its all very slow.

A few questions while I wait for some help from my colleuges.

What exactly do you mean with no desktop items? Did the toolbar and the taskbar at the bottom also disapear or only the icons that point to programs?
Did you let it run for a few minutes before you gave up? If the computer has the problem that I suspect it could hang with no items on the desktop for a while if it decides to go into one of those 100% CPU usage periods.

If the desktop items really have disapeared after you have given it a good chance of getting out of the 100% CPU state the following script has a good chance of returning your desktop.
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/regs_ed ... fixall.vbs . Download it and save it to a place where you can find it. Once saved, navigate to the file. > Double click > allow it to turn off, then restart Windows Explorer.

Hopefully this will resolve your problem.
A reboot may be necessary.

Let me know what happens.

If this worked try the following:

First of all you are again running Spywareguard, which must be turned off until the fixes are all done, or it could interfere with the fixes. Please right click the System Tray icon for Spywareguard to open it, then use 'Menu > File > Exit'. Then confirm the program is not running. After each reboot until we are finished cleaning you computer check that it is not running. If it is exit it again.

Now see if you can find a way of disabeling the "Life Guard" that belongs to Spyeraser.

Open HijackThis and click "Do a System Scan Only" or "Scan". Put a check mark by the items that are listed below.

O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\Parameters: Domain = ennsinsurance.com
O17 - HKLM\Software\..\Telephony: DomainName = ennsinsurance.com
O17 - HKLM\System\CS1\Services\Tcpip\Parameters: Domain = ennsinsurance.com

Close all open windows except HijackThis and then click the "Fix checked" button


Click Start> Run> type in CMD, tap enter key
Copy/Paste: ipconfig /flushdns
If you are typing this in, note the space between the g /f
It needs to be there.


Now lets check some settings on your system.
Enter your Control Panel and double-click on Network Connections

Then right click on your Default Connection
Usually Local Area Connection for Cable and DSL
Left click on Properties
Double-Click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item
Select the radio dial that says Obtain DNS Servers Automatically
Note: Do this for all Network Connections
Press OK twice to get out of the properties screen and reboot.

Run HijackThis scan and post the log.

I uninstalled Spyeraser and spywareguard...

I just meant that my desktop icons were gone, but they came back..

everything seems very slow..as if there is a lot of thinking going on..

Sorry for the delay.
Real life decided to need my attention for a bit.

Go to Start. Click "Control Panel". Find "System" and click it. Click the "Computer Name" tab. Go to "Netwok ID Wizard" and click it. Check the "This computer is for home use and is not part of a business network." The computer will work for a moment and then ask you to reboot. Do so.
This should hopefully take care of the O17 problems.

Run another HijackThis log and post it.

Also how is the computer running now.

startup this am was wierd. No desktop icons very very slow, never really did fully boot up. i rebooted and it came back normal.

Now I cant log in the old way and my settings for that login are gone. i cant seem to find anything, its as if the computer is new ie'Welcome to fifrefos etx...

I would like to find my old settings. Also whenever task manage r runs the CPU spikes to 100%

The more I hear from you the more I believe that it it is not a malware problem. It looks more like a hardware or software problem.
Hopefuly we can roll back the changes and get you back to where you where before.
This is the instructions from Microsoft for using a restore point. What we are trying to do is to roll it back to a point before we changed anything on your computer. It could well be that Windows will give you some warnings about Spyware Guard and Uniblue SpyEraser. We can correct those problems from HijackThis or by reinstalling the programs.
Once we have the machine rolled back I will give you the URL for a web forum that specializes in hardware and software problems.

You are in all probability running as Administrator and can therefore disregard point 1.

1. Log on to Windows as Administrator.
2. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click System Restore. System Restore starts.
3. On the Welcome to System Restore page, click Restore my computer to an earlier time (if it is not already selected), and then click Next.
4. On the Select a Restore Point page, click the most recent system checkpoint in the On this list, click a restore point list, and then click Next. A System Restore message may appear that lists configuration changes that System Restore will make. Click OK.
5. On the Confirm Restore Point Selection page, click Next. System Restore restores the previous Windows XP configuration, and then restarts the computer.
6. Log on to the computer as Administrator. The System Restore Restoration Complete page appears.
7. Click OK.


The restore point you want is on or before February 16.

By the way I did some experiments with Task Manager and followed waht happens when you run it. On my machine that runs very well and has a lot of memory Task Manager peaks at over 50% when opened.

Happy to hear that you are back in business.

As I told you I do not believe that your problem is malware related but more related to a soft or hardware problem. It could even be as simple as you having too many programs running in relation to your avaiable RAM.
As I am not an expert in these problems I will ask you to go to a forum that has the expertise. Normally I would tell you to go to CastleCops because I am a member of the staff there (malware related problems) but at the moment they are under attack and iffy if they are reachable. Let's try http://pcpitstop.com/. They are very good at what they are doing. You can tell them that I have checked for malware and did not find anything. Also warn them that the DNS servers are set correctly. That are the O17 lines. We do not want you to gat another round of problems with that. :(

You can delete the tools that I had you download althoug Process Explorer could be worth keeping. It is useful to see what is using your CPU cycles. Comboscan and Silent Runner are really not of much use to you.

Now that your computer seems to free of malware I want you to clean up some loose ends and take some precautions to avoid being re-infected

  1. Clean out Temporary Files etc. Download System Security Suite from http://www.igorshpak.net/software/3ssetup104.zip. Extract it from the zip file into a folder and double click on sss.exe. Check the boxes under the 'Items to Clear' tab and click 'Clear Selected Items'. Reboot when prompted. It is a good idea to do this every few weeks as a lot of junk collects there over time.
  2. Use an Anti Virus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future. See this link for a listing of some on line & their stand-alone anti virus programs:

  3. Update your Anti Virus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Anti virus software at least a few times a week (Even more if you wish. Many AV programs update more than once a day). If you do not update your anti virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
  4. Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.
    Be restrictive with granting access to the internet. If you are unsure if the program really needs the access, test it by denying the access and see if this has any negative effects. If not, make the block permanent.

  5. Never run two Antivirus programs or two Firewalls at the same time. They can interfere with each other and cause problems.
  6. Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly or set the computer to update automatically. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
  7. Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option.
    This will provide real-time spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an anti virus software. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

  8. Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. You should also scan your computer with the program on a regular basis just as you would an anti virus software in conjunction with Spybot. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

  9. Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs. A article on anti-malware products with links for this program and others can be found here:

  10. Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Thnx Elrond..I really appreciate your dedication to this worthy cause..:) I may one day help in the fight myself..once I figure out how to run a computer properly and take the MRU course..

A lot of us who help did not have much computer savy when we started our training. What it takes is time and dedication. The rest you will learn on the way through training. You do know how to sign up if you ever want to do so. Else shoot me a PM and I will steer you right.
