CPU FAN IS RUNNING MORE FREQUENTLY AND FEVERISHLY

Unread postby Sethland » January 21st, 2007, 11:20 pm

I noticed that my cpu fan is running more frequently and prevalently than ever before. My brand new laptop feels warmer now than before. I am also using an external cooling fan board everytime I'm using my laptop to prevent overheating. I used to not hear the fan operates before even if i'm online for hours.

Also, what is "Form Spoofing" because I got a message earlier when I couldn't be directed to a web page. It stated "WARNING!!! FORM SPOOFING DETECTED!"

Another question (sorry to ask too many questions but I just want to bog down the forum with too many topics from the same user account), is it okay to have two antispyware programs and how do I know that the program is protecting me on "real time?" I currently have Lavasoft Ad-Aware s.e.

Any answers to these questions would be very much appreciated. Thanks a million!!! :?:

Here is my HIJACTHIS logfile in case it's needed:

Sethland,

It's likely that the warning you received was from Norton, and that it was letting you know that it was keeping a bad site from loading, which is exactly what it should do. :)

Regarding your anti-spyware programs, if you are running both ewido and Ad-aware, there should be no conflict; however, ewido has now been replaced by AVG Anti-Spyware, so you may want to upgrade to that version. Keep both of these programs updated, and scan with them frequently. Do keep in mind that although it is fine to have two anti-spyware programs, under no circumstances should you use more than one resident antivirus program.

If this is a new laptop and you suspect that there are hardware problems, then I suggest you take advantage of your warranty and see if it needs to be repaired. You may also wish to take advantage of free diagnostic tests at PC Pitstop...

http://pcpitstop.com/

There's no evidence of malware in your HijackThis log; however, these "orphaned" entries can be fixed, just to tidy up a bit...

Close all programs leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following, making sure you get them all and not any others by mistake:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {0BF43445-2F28-4351-9252-17FE6E806AA0} - (no file)

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update to the latest version...

Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6.0.
  • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications."
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement."
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java version.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6-windows-i586.exe to install the newest version.

Everything else appears to be fine. :D

You're very welcome, Sethland. :)

You're using two good anti-spyware programs now. Also, consider the following...
  • Windows Updates (a must!) - It is very important to make sure that both Internet Explorer and Windows are kept current with the latest critical security patches from Microsoft. To do this, open Internet Explorer, then and select Tools » Windows Update, and follow the online instructions from there.
  • SpywareBlaster - Great prevention tool to keep nasties from installing on your system.
  • IE-SpyAd - puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
  • Firewall (a must!) - It is definitely a must have. Two good firewalls that have free versions for personal use are Sunbelt-Kerio and ZoneAlarm.
  • Anti-Virus (a must!) - It is also a must have. You're using an antivirus now, but if you need a new one in the future, two good programs are Avast and AVG, they're both have free versions for personal use.
Note: You must only use 1 (one) AV because if you have 2 AVs, they will conflict with each other and will make your system slow or cause other problems.

Good luck, and safe surfing. Image

One more thing, will I still get all the necessary Windows Update if I didn't instal the Windows Validation Tool? I set the Windows Update to notify me instead of an automatic install/download because I don't want the Windows Validation Tool to install automatically since I hear a lot of horror stories on this update. Also, I didn't upgrade to IE 7 on my new laptop because my old laptop is running slowly now that I installed IE7 on it. I hated the layout of IE7 and my old comp runs like a snail. What is your take on this?

Btw, thanx 4 d rapid response..........

You're welcome, Seth. :)

Yes, you should still get all the Microsoft Security Updates if you're set up for notification.

The issue with I.E.7 slowing down the computer is quite annoying. It is particularly likely to be a problem if I.E.7 is downloaded via auto-updates. Best results occur when you go to the direct site and download it manually yourself...

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/dow ... fault.mspx

This is the best way to get a good installation of I.E.7...

Before installing IE7 (or before *uninstalling* it) it is important to complete the following steps.

1. Set a restore point (just in case)
2. Disable antivirus, antispyware, crashguards etc.
3. Shut down all other running programs (except for firewall) - that includes Messenger, Windows Defender, OneCare - don't forget to exit via systray icons as well.
4. Turn off Automatic Updates until you have [a] uninstalled all you want, rebooted twice, [b] installed what you want and rebooted twice - once you've done that, turn Automatic Updates back on.

NOTE: The only exception about leaving a firewall running, is Zone Alarm. If Zone Alarm is on a system, it should be completely uninstalled and the XP firewall used until after I.E.7 has been safely installed and tested.

Be certain to re-enable all protective software, AV, anti-spyware, etc., before going online again.
