alkan,
This NaviPromo infection usually installs from a rootkit.
Let's see if we can find it.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Set Your Computer to Show All Files
  1. Click Start.
  2. Click My Computer.
  3. Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  4. Select the View Tab.
  5. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
  6. Uncheck Hide protected operating system files (recommended).
  7. Click Yes to confirm.
  8. Uncheck the Hide file extensions for known file types.
  9. Click OK.
In addition], go to Start, Search. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that 'Search system folders', 'Search hidden files and folders', and 'Search subfolders' are checked.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Download Blacklight Beta from here:
http://www.f-secure.com/blacklight/try_blacklight.html
* Hit I accept. It will take you to the download page.
* Download blbeta.exe and save it to the C:\
* Once saved... double click blbeta.exe to install the program.
Go to Start-->Run, copy in the following text and press Enter:
C:\blbeta.exe /expert
(space between blbeta.exe and /expert)

Accept the agreement, leave [X]scan through Windows Explorer checked.
Click > scan, Then > next
You'll see a list of all items found.
Don't do anything else right now.
There will be a log in C:\ with the name fsbl.xxxxxxx.log (the xxxxxxx stand for numbers).
Copy and paste the contents of this log into your next reply.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Download and install CCleaner from here.
Set Options in CCleaner and run Cleaning Scan. Open the CCleaner program.
( Do not use the Issues block to clean anything with this program. It is for experts only and it is risky).
  • Set Cookie Retention.
Click on the Options block on the left, then choose Cookies.
Under the Cookies to delete pane, highlight any cookies you would like to retain permanently (those companies or sites with which you regularly visit or do business), and click the right arrow > to move them to the Cookies to keep pane.
  • Run Cleaning Scan. Click on the Cleaner block on the left. Choose the Windows tab.
Check everything Except Autocomplete Form History and the Advanced part of the Menu. Click the Run Cleaner button. This process could take a while. When CCleaner shows how much has been removed, cleaning is finished.

-----------------------------------------------------------
Retrieve the Installed Programs List from CCleaner
Open CCleaner.
In the Left Pane, click Tools
Verify that Uninstall is highlighted in color, or click on it.
In the lower Right, click Save to Text File.
Pull down the arrow at the top of the Save dialog and choose Desktop as the location.
You can leave the filename as install.txt
Click Save
-----------------------------------------------------------

Please post the log from Blacklight and the Uninstall list from CCleaner.

im confused about downloading bibeta.exe. i can only download to local disc(c:) and when i double click to install, the agreement appears and when accepted it goes to a scan start page. if i then close the programme and then go start---->run and type in c:\bibeta.exe /expert and press enter im told the file cant be found.

I think the problem is that when you go to the command line, you are typing "bibeta" instead of "blbeta"
The second letter is a lower case "L", (stands for BlackLight beta)
I would start the sequence again and see if you have success.
Sorry, it's one of the vagaries of fonts we live with.

the scan start window does not show any box refering to "scan through windows explorer". it is in the example used in the "help" files demo-ing how to use programme. has there been a bad download ?

They may have changed the program without updating the help file.
It is a beta version.
Try it without any attention to the IE box.
Any try that gives us the log file will be useful.

alkan,
Your HijackThis log is clean, and Blacklight shows no rootkit. Good!
Let's see the details of what AVG-AS reports
Print out this instruction, or save it to a Notepad file on your desktop, since you won't have Internet access in Safe Mode.
------------------------------------------------
Reboot your computer in SAFE MODE using the F8 method.
To do this, restart your computer and immediately after hearing your computer beep once during startup [but before the Windows icon appears] press the F8 key repeatedly. A menu will appear with several options. Use the arrow keys to navigate and select the option to run Windows in "Safe Mode".
------------------------------------------------
Scan with AVG Anti-Spyware as follows:
  • Launch AVG Anti-Spyware, click on the "Scanner" button and choose the "Settings" tab.
    - Under "How to act?", click on "Recommended actions" and choose "Quarantine" to set default action for detected malware.
    - Under "How to Scan?" check all (default).
    - Under "Possibly unwanted software" check all (default).
    - Under "What to Scan?" make sure "Scan every file" is selected (default).
    - Under "Reports" select "Automatically generate report after every scan" and UNcheck "Only if threats were found".
  • Click the "Scan" tab to return to scanning options.
  • Click "Complete System Scan" to start.
Note: Close all open windows, programs, and DO NOT USE the computer while AVG Anti-Spyware is scanning. If Explorer or other programs are open during the scan that means certain files will also be in use. Some malware will insert itself and hide in areas that are "protected" by Windows when the files are being used. This can hamper AVG Anti-Spyware's ability to clean properly and may result in reinfection.
  • When the scan has finished you will be presented with a list of infected objects found. Click "Apply all actions" to place the files in Quarantine.
IMPORTANT! Do not save the report before you have clicked the Apply all actions button. If you do, the log that is created will indicate "No action taken", making it more difficult to interpret the report. So be sure you save it only AFTER clicking the "Apply all actions" button?
  • Click on "Save Report" to view all completed scans. Click on the most recent scan you just performed and select "Save report as" - the default file name will be in date/time format as follows: Report-Scan-20061031-090001.txt. Save to your desktop. A copy of each report will also be saved in C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5\Reports\
  • Exit AVG Anti-Spyware when done.

Post the report contents in a reply here.

i am using avg anti-spyware 7.5 free edition and cant do most of the things you ask. i could only set it to "scan every file". so there is no report to post. it found no "threats" but did report a "reading error" in the "boot sector of disc". i am quite prepared to download and pay for the full version of avg if you think it is required or is there a better solution such as nod32 or others ?

alkan,
I am suspicious that a potential hardware problem could be involved here.
Please print this out before you start.
-----------------------------------------------------------
A bootlog is a file where windows writes down which drivers are loaded and which not during startup.
First, Set Your Computer to Show All Files
  9. Click OK.
----------------------------------------------
Using Windows explorer, see if you find c:\windows\ntbtlog.txt - If it exists, delete the file.
  1. Click Start then Run and type in msconfig in the edit box and hit Enter or click Ok
  2. Click on the boot.ini tab and check the box that says /BOOTLOG
  3. Click Apply & Ok and reboot the PC (may take a bit longer to boot)
  4. Using Windows Explorer, locate c:\windows\ntbtlog.txt and post the content of the file.
(To Undo this change later, repeat the process, this time Unchecking the box labeled BOOTLOG.)
-----------------------------------------------------------

Check Disk for Errors
Go to Start, My Computer
Right click the icon for the C:\ drive and choose Properties
On the Tools tab, click Check Now.
In the Check Disk Dialog, don't check any boxes and click Start
This may take a very long time (hours). Don't attempt to stop the process until it's done. It cannot be stopped except with the power switch.

You will see a report when it's done.
If it finds no errors it will just notify you that disk check is complete.
If it finds errors it will list them. Please post back what you get.

Let me know how it goes.

Please try that again when you get a chance. You should be sure "Normal Startup" is checked on the General tab, and "/BOOTLOG" is checked on the Boot.ini tab.

Open ntbtlog.txt with Notepad and paste contents here.

normal startup is selected but when i select bootlog it selects selective start up which i then reset to normal start up which in turn deselects bootlog. this is then selected but this again resets the start up to selective start up. this appears to be a never ending process

Forgot about that.
OK, run it with selective startup or whatever it wants with /BOOTLOG checked.
Just be sure to use Notepad to copy/Paste the log file.

You can set it back to unchecked /BOOTLOG and Normal startup after you get the log copy.
