Hello meandy.....

Well, the O4 entry is gone, but the O16 entry (active-X control) remains....did you disable spyware doctor? Did you do the AVG scan?

1. Please re-open HiJackThis and choose scan only. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked.

After that, Reboot.

I apologize for creating a new thread, that wasn't my intention. No, I haven't done the AVG scan yet because I missed your reply, probably because I was wandering around elsewhere, who knows? I do have the latest HJT report and I will download the AVG (first will disable Norton) later in the day. I hope I do this right for a change.

Ok, I ran into a problem with the AVG scan. It did find one infection, Not-A-Virus.Exploit.ByteVerify and I clicked to quarantine. When I selected Reports icon, it said there were no reports.

Your HJT appears clean and I'm glad your system is running well with out problems!

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

• THIS IS IMPORTANT! - If you are using Windows XP then you should reset system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point and that you have a clean restore point should you need one!
  
  Now let's reset your restore points.
  
  Click Start Menu >> All Programs >> Accessories >> System Tools >> SystemRestore
  
  Press OK. Choose 'Create a Restore Point' then Next. Name it and press 'Create' then when the confirmation screen shows the restore point has been created click 'Close'.
  
  Next go to Start Menu >> Run, then type:
  
  cleanmgr
  
  click OK, when Disk Cleanup opens go to the 'More Options' tab and press 'Cleanup' on the system restore area which will remove all the restore points except the one we just created. To close Disk Cleanup and remove the Temporary Internet Files detected in the initial scan click OK then choose Yes on the confirmation window.
  
  
• Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
  • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
  • Click once on the Security tab
  • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
  • Click once on the Custom Level button.
    
    • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
    • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
    • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
    • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
    • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
    • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
  • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
    
  • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    
  • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

The following is a list of tools and utilities that I like to suggest to people. This list is full of great tools and utilities to help you understand how you got infected and how to keep from getting infected again.

• Spybot Search & Destroy- Uber powerful tool which can search and annhilate nasties that make it onto your system. Now with an Immunize section that will help prevent future infections.
  
• AdAware - Another very powerful tool which searches and kills nasties that infect your system. AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy compliment each other very well.
  
• SpywareBlaster - Great prevention tool to keep nasties from installing on your system.
  
• SpywareGuard - Works as a Spyware "Shield" to protect your computer from getting malware in the first place.
  
• IE-SpyAd - puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
  
• ATF Cleaner by Atribune. This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only. ATF is a new, freeware, temporary file cleaner for Windows, IE, Firefox and Opera with a simple, easy-to-use interface. The main screen allows the user to either clean all temporary files, or select files for cleaning. The program also knows if Firefox and or Opera is being used, and gives the option of cleaning the temporary files associated with those applications.

It is hard to believe how much better it is with all the garbage gone! I do have a question regarding the tools/utilities you suggested. I already use Spybot plus I use SpywareDoctor. Also use Win Defender though I am not sure it ever does anything. I know one should have at least two spyware programs but is that enough. Does it hurt to use three or even four? Or is that a waste of time.

I would also like to thank you for your patience with me. It means a lot to have directions spelled out in language easily understood and easy to follow. I have been to many "help" forums in the past and can honestly say this one is the best. I know I have been given excellent advice and help and could understand what was being said. I can't say that for some of the other forums where one tends to get help from other posters. And I am not denigrating those other posters, just that when I was at my wits' end or maybe the end of my rope, one poster told me all I had to do was run Spybot and that would solve my problems as if I were some kind of moron for not already knowing that. Sheesh, I had run every program I had multiple times plus done many other things while trying to figure this problem out. The tech at my ISP told me to use the recovery disk which I thought was rather drastic. But then again he usually tells me that he doesn't know what the problem is or run the recovery disk so I don't think he knows that much. I think I will call him back and tell him I cleaned off the monitor and now my computer is running fine. (yes, I am being sarcastic).

Spybot, Spyware Doctor and Defender are just fine....personally I have Spybot and Defender on my system, and also adaware for an occasional scan. Keep the links I gave handy in case you want to change out your spyware programs...at least then you will know that the programs are recommended and not 'rogue' (there are some 'rogue' anti-spyware programs out there!)
