Hello lgroth

There is nothing in your log that jumps out at me, although it could do with a bit of a tidy up, have you tried system restore? It sounds to me like you have a file association problem

Restore

Unread postby lgroth » November 25th, 2006, 11:06 am

Thanks for replying. I tried Restore and it will not work. Everything remains the same. What I have done is change the name of Character Map and now when I try to open anything the Open With dialog comes up and I have to go directly to the .exe file and start the program from there.

Any suggestions?

Yes I do have another suggestion but first I would like you to run a temp file cleaner and an anti malware scanner for me.

Download CCleaner from here to clean temp files from your computer.

• Double click on the file to start the installation of the program.
• Select your language and click OK, then next.
• Read the license agreement and click I Agree.
• Click next to use the default install location. Click Install then finish to complete installation.
• Double click the CCleaner shortcut on the desktop to start the program.
• On the "Windows" tab, under "Internet Explorer," uncheck "Cookies" if you do not want them deleted. (If deleted, you will likely need to reenter your passwords at all sites where a cookie is used to recognize you when you visit).
• If you use either the Firefox or Mozilla browsers, the box to uncheck for "Cookies" is on the Applications tab, under Firefox/Mozilla.
• Click on the "Options" icon at the left side of the window, then click on "Advanced."
deselect "Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours."
• Click on the "Cleaner" icon on the left side of the window, then click Run Cleaner to run the program.
• Caution: It is not recommended that you use the "Issues" feature unless you are very familiar with the registry as it has been known to find legitimate items.
• After CCleaner has completed its process, click Exit.

Please download AVG Anti-Spyware to your Desktop or to your usual Download Folder.
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
• Install AVG Anti-Spyware by double clicking the installer.
• Follow the prompts. Make sure that Launch AVG Anti-Spyware is checked.
• On the main screen under Your Computer's security.
• Click on Change state next to Resident shield. It should now change to inactive.
• Click on Change state next to Automatic updates. It should now change to inactive.
• Next to Last Update, click on Update now. (You will need an active internet connection to perform this)
• Wait until you see the Update succesfull message.
• Right-click the AVG Anti-Spyware Tray Icon and uncheck Start with Windows.
• Right-click the AVG Anti-Spyware Tray Icon and select Exit. Confirm by clicking Yes.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.
AVG Anti-Spyware manual updates.
Download the Full database to your Desktop or to your usual Download Folder and install it by double clicking the file. Make sure that AVG Anti-Spyware is closed before installing the update.

Close ALL open Windows / Programs / Folders. Please start AVG Anti-Spyware and run a full scan.
• Click on Scanner on the toolbar.
• Click on the Settings tab.
• Under How to act?
• Click on Recommended Action and choose Quarantine from the popup menu.
• Under How to scan?
• All checkboxes should be ticked.
• Under Possibly unwanted software:
• All checkboxes should be ticked.
• Under Reports:
• Select Automatically generate report after every scan and uncheck Only if threats were found.
• Under What to scan?
• Select Scan every file.
• Click on the Scan tab.
• Click on Complete System Scan to start the scan process.
• Let the program scan the machine.
• When the scan has finished, follow the instructions below.
IMPORTANT : Don't click on the "Save Scan Report" button before you did hit the "Apply all Actions" button.
• Make sure that Set all elements to: shows Quarantine (1), if not click on the link and choose Quarantine from the popup menu. (2)
• At the bottom of the window click on the Apply all Actions button. (3)
Image
• When done, click the Save Scan Report button. (4)
• Click the Save Report as button.
• Save the report to your Desktop.
• Right-click the AVG Anti-Spyware Tray Icon and select Exit. Confirm by clicking Yes.
Reboot in Normal Mode.

Post me a fresh hijackthis log and the AVG AS report and let me know if you are still having the file association problems

Ok first a bit of a tidy up, I must stress there is no malware visable in your log, and I don't think your problem is related to malware. By the looks of things you are pretty well protected anyway!! ;)

Run hijackthis and click the scan button, then make sure all browsers and windows are closed and put a check against the following and click 'fix checked'.

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = about:blank
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = about:blank

Close hijackthis.

Doug Knox has a nice collection of file association fixes, see here Have a look and see if any of those will help with your problem.

Note; I strongly recommend that you back up your registry before applying any registry fix.

Please post back and let me know how you get on.
