Three days of sheer frustration

Unread postby squeals » November 17th, 2006, 7:06 pm

Have managed to remove the viruses but not the browser problems (pop ups for downloading "security" programs) and inability to use IE7 tabbed browsing.

Already ran Sophos, AdAware, Spybot, Defender, SpywareBlaster and SpyHunter (this advises me I have DriveCleaner). Am sick ofrunning so many scans and not getting rid of the beasis wit AAW or S&D.

Help me please!! Thanks in advance. Squeals

Hi squeals! Welcome to Malware Removal Forums! :)

The infection you have is known to hide from HijackThis, therefore we need to rename HijackThis in order to make the infection visible.

You can rename HijackThis by doing the following:

Locate HijackThis, which is on your Desktop here:

C:\Documents and Settings\Simon\Desktop\HijackThis.exe

Right-click and select Rename. Rename HijackThis to scanner and press ENTER on your keyboard. Create a new log and post it back here.

I would also like to see another log from HijackThis (scanner).
  • Run Hijackthis.
  • Click on Open the Misc Tools section.
  • Next click on Open uninstall manager.
  • Press the Save list button.
  • Save the file to your desktop, with the default name of uninstall_list
  • Copy & Paste the entire contents of that file in your in your next post.

Please post the requested logs back here.

Thanks!

Many thanks for suggestions. First paste is from using "scanner.exe". Second paste is from the uninstall list (also using "scanner.exe").

Hi Squeals!

Have got all body parts possible crossed you can assist with this otherwise will have to resort to a PC repair shop (how embarrassing is that?!).

I'm sure we can get the computer cleaned up without the need of a repair shop. :)

Please do the following...

Click Start > Run > type in appwiz.cpl and hit enter. From the list uninstall the following, if present:

J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 5

Txt files below as requested. Am also running SpyBOT and AdAware as added precauion but hopefully will only identify the usual suspects....

VundoFix V6.2.11

Checking Java version...

Java version is 1.5.0.9

Hi squeals! Glad to hear things are back to normal but, there is work left to do.

Please do the following...

We need to DISABLE Spybot's TeaTimer as it may interfere with the fix:
  • Run Spybot Search & Destroy
  • Go to the Mode menu, and make sure "Advanced Mode" is selected
  • On the left hand side, choose Tools -> Resident
  • Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts
  • Exit SpyBot
Note: You can enable TeaTimer once we are finished with the cleanup process.
__________________________

Lets continue:

  • Please go here to Upload Malware
  • Fill out the infomation, and post the link to this thread.
  • In the File(s) To Submit: box 1. copy and paste the following:
    • C:\WINDOWS\system32\efcyxwx.dll
  • Click on Send File and close the page
__________________________

We need to run VundoFix again to remove the remaining Vundo infection:

  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Right Click inside the listbox (white box) and click Add more file?
  • Copy & Paste the 2 entries below into the top 2 boxes

    • C:\WINDOWS\system32\efcyxwx.dll
    • C:\WINDOWS\system32\xwxycfe.*
  • Click Add Files and click Close Window
  • Click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will shutdown your computer, click OK.
  • Turn your computer back on.
  • Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt when requested in your next post.

Sorry didn't respond yesterday - was away on business....

Unread postby squeals » November 23rd, 2006, 6:32 pm

Many, many thanks again. Judging from the hoops I still had to go through, and probably still do, this particular infection is a real nasty beastie?! Am intrigued to know what it was, how I got it and more importantly how I can prevent it happening again......

Anyway enouh of the curiosity (which is probably how the PC got infected in the first instance!!):

Hi Simon!

Many, many thanks again. Judging from the hoops I still had to go through, and probably still do, this particular infection is a real nasty beastie?! Am intrigued to know what it was, how I got it and more importantly how I can prevent it happening again......

Vundo is not a very nice infection and can be a beast at times. Luckily though it is not so difficult to remove, however Vundo can sometimes be stubborn, where it will not be defeated so easily. As for where you got the infection, I am not sure, sorry. Once we have cleaned up the computer, I will give you tips for securing your computer so stay tuned. :)

Now, I need you to rename HijackThis.exe (the dynamite icon) to Scanner.

Unread postby squeals » November 24th, 2006, 4:32 pm

Thanks for info, I googled "Vundo" on the web but didn't go looking at any of the links just in case any of the sites just compounded the problem!! Certainly plenty of info on it though.

Couldn't find the file in Content.IE5 but I have been regularly clearing cache, temp files, cookies etc.).

I ran Killbox as requested and then reran HJT (renamed as Scanner). Results of which are:

Hi Simon! Vundo has come back again, but this time it has morphed changing the file name.

Important: while we attempt to clean the computer, please try and keep it off the Internet as much as possible to avoid further occurrences of this or any other infection.

Lets continue:

  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Right Click inside the listbox (white box) and click Add more file?
  • Copy & Paste the 2 entries below into the top 2 boxes

    • C:\WINDOWS\system32\ssqpq.dll
    • C:\WINDOWS\system32\qpqss.*

Hopefully this has nearly killed the Vundo installation. Although not still thinking about computer repair shops :? I am thinking hammers and screwdrivers (well completely formatting the HDD and starting all over again  ).

Thanks so much for your continuing help......

Hi Simon!

There is something in the ComboFix log that is related to another infection. We need to run another tool to confirm the state of it.

Download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop.
http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix.zip
Extract all the files to your Destop. A folder named SmitfraudFix will be created on your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press Enter
This program will scan large amounts of files on your computer for known patterns so please be patient while it works. When it is done, the results of the scan will be displayed and it will create a log named rapport.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other options until you are asked to do so!

Please post the contents of C:\rapport.txt back here.

Also, there is no need to reformat your computer for any of these types of infections. Formatting your computer only means we are letting the creator's of these infections win the battle. :(

From the look of your HijackThis log, Vundo has gone - so that is good news. All that is left to do, after I see the SmitfraudFix log, is some clean up and that is it.

Your patience is very much appreciated! :)

Patience is a virtue - doesn't necessarily make me virtuous!

Thanks as ever Trogan.

I have to say that I am quite intrigued by the tenacity of the various beasties I have collected in what (I believe) was only one click through. Have no fears I want to see this one through to the bitter end also. I am (I grudgingly admit) very impressed by the cunning and ingenuity of the peddlers of this muck - just a shame they can't turn their hands to more worthwhile causes.......

I have run SD a number of times since the 16th (start of all my troubles) and on several occasions it has found smitfraud and each time I asked for it to be removed.

I also ran Sophos last night and it found one virus (MAL/PACKER in Document & Settings\Simon\Local Settings\Temp\rbbrkeqx.dll) and one partial virus (W95/SLEDGE-A in C:\Windows\System32\Activescan\pskavs.dll) but it deleted both.

Have run the smitfraud fix and rapport.txt follows:

SmitFraudFix v2.124

Scan done at 21:23:44.03, 25/11/2006
Run from C:\Documents and Settings\Simon\Desktop\SmitfraudFix
OS: Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600] - Windows_NT

+ Created at: 20:14:21 26/11/2006

+ Scan result:

C:\VundoFix Backups\efcyxwx.dll.bad -> Adware.Virtumonde : Cleaned with backup (quarantined).
C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\btwebcontrol.dll -> Dialer.BT.a : Cleaned with backup (quarantined).

::Report end

Have kept the PC off the web other than when I went on to upload AVG updates. All programs downloaded onto laptop and "ported" across. Will keep it off the web until instructed otherwise.

All logs, utilities and programs used to purge this muck have been saved into a single desktop folder to aid later use/deletion as and when instructed.

Thanks once again and look forward to the all clear!! :D
