You've done great....

You have a rootkit on your computer....I'm getting some advice and I'll be back with more instructions as soon as I can.

We'll get the system clean!

Hello Jenny.....

OK, it seems this infection is the same as the last infection you had that Kimberly helped you with back in August. Seems it is a variety of EGDAccess with rootkit features. Kimberly tells me that it is often comes with Online Games or a program called mailskinner. The only thing that I noted on your ComboFix log was that you recently added a number of online game programs to your system...I would bet that this is the source.

let's see if this works...if it doesn't there are other things we can do, so don't despair!:

Copy/Print these intructions below for reference as you will be in safe mode and this page will be unavailable to you!

1. Reveal Hidden Files

  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • SelectTools menu
  • Click Folder Options.
  • Select the View Tab.
  • Check Show hidden files and foldersin the Hidden files and folders section.
  • Uncheck Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
  • Uncheck the Hide file extensions for known file types option.
  • Click Yes.
  • Click OK.

2. I see you have Ewido anti-spyware on your system. Open Ewido.
  • On the main screen under Your Computer's security.
    • Click on Change state next to Resident shield. It should now change to inactive.
  • On the main screen select the icon "Update" then select the "Update now" link.
    • Next select the "Start Update" button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  • Once the update has completed select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
  • Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
  • Under "Reports"
    • Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
    • Un-Select "Only if threats were found"
Close Ewido anti-spyware, Do Not run a scan just yet, we will shortly.

3. Download Brute Force Uninstaller.
Unzip it to it’s own folder (c:\BFU)

RIGHT-CLICK HERE and choose "Save As" (in IE it's "Save Target As") in order to download EGDACCESS Remover. Save it in the folder you made earlier (c:\BFU)

4. Please re-open HiJackThis and choose scan only. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked.

Reboot into safe mode by restarting your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode. Login to your usual account.

5. Start the Brute Force Uninstaller by doubleclicking BFU.exe

In the scriptline to execute copy and paste c:\bfu\EGDACCESS.bfu
Press execute and let it do it’s job.

Wait for the complete script execution box to popup and press OK.
Press exit to terminate the BFU program.

6. Please delete these files using Windows Explorer (if present):
  • Click Start>>All Programs>>Accessories>>Windows Explorer
  • Navigate to the listed files, then right-click to select them and click delete:

C:\windows\system32\xyaracfvxi.exe
c:\WINDOWS\Prefetch\XYARACFVXI.EXE-3B803B69.pf
c:\WINDOWS\system32\xyaracfvxi.dat
c:\WINDOWS\system32\xyaracfvxi_nav.dat
c:\WINDOWS\system32\xyaracfvxi_navps.dat

If you get an error when deleting a file, right click on the file and check to see if the read only attribute is checked. If it is uncheck it and try again.

7. (1) Navigate to C:\Windows\Temp folder
Click Edit, click Select All, press the DELETE key, and then click Yes to confirm that you want to send all the items to the Recycle Bin. (Note: Do NOT delete the Temp folder)

(2) Navigate to C:\Documents and Settings\(EVERY LISTED USER)\Local Settings\Temp
Click Edit, click Select All, press the DELETE key, and then click Yes to confirm that you want to send all the items to the Recycle Bin. (Note: Do NOT delete the Temp folder)

(3) Clean out the Temporary Internet files Procede like this...
- Quit Internet Explorer and quit any instances of Windows Explorer.
- Click Start button, click Control Panel, and then double-click Internet Options.
- On the General tab, click Delete Files under Temporary Internet Files.
- In the Delete Files dialog box, click to select the Delete all offline content check box , and then click OK.
- On the General tab, click Delete Cookies under Temporary Internet Files, and then click OK.
- Click on the Programs tab then click the Reset Web Settings button. Click Apply then OK.
- Click OK

If you use Firefox, please do this:
  • Click Tools from the Mozilla menubar.
  • Click Options... from the Tools menu.
  • Click the privacy tab.
  • Click Cache.
  • Click the Clear Cache button.

Empty the Recycle Bin by right-clicking the Recycle Bin icon on your Desktop, and then click Empty Recycle Bin.

8. IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while AVG Anti-Spyware is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning proccess:
  • Lauch Ewido-anti-spyware by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
  • Select the "Scanner" icon at the top and then the "Scan" tab then click on "Complete System Scan".
  • ewido will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
Once the scan is complete do the following:
  • If you have any infections you will prompted, then select "Apply all actions"
  • Next select the "Reports" icon at the top.
  • Select the "Save report as" button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system (make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important).
  • Close Ewido and reboot your system back into Normal Mode.

9. Please repeat the Blacklight scan:
Double-click blbeta.exe then accept the agreement, click > "Scan" then > "Next".

You'll see a list of all items found. There will also be a log on your desktop with the name "fsbl.xxxxxxxxxxxxxx.log" (the xxxxxxxxxxxxxx stand for numbers). Note the numbers of this second Blacklight scan so you can distinguish it from the prior scan we did.

Copy and paste this log in your next reply. Don't choose the rename option yet! I want to see the log first, because legitimate items can also be present there, such as "wbemtest.exe"
10 Post the results of:
  • the ewido report scan
  • the content of the file C:\egd.txt that was created by the script
  • The content of the folder bfubackups in your System(32) folder. This folder was also created by the script.
  • A new HijackThis log
  • let me know if you are still having any problems

You may need to use multiple replies to fit all the content...that is OK...

Hello again....This morning uk time I had trouble signing in to MSN and after talking to to technical support they adviced me that "Zone Alarm" was not allowing me to sign in so they asked me to uninstall it and to use McAfee Firewall instead....I did this and was then able to log into MSN.....thought you might need to know this.

NO to this problem you are investigating for me below is the BlackLight scan I did....the one I have just done (instruction 9 of your text) didn't show any items found!

Good job Jenny....there are a few things we still need to do:

1. Please re-open HiJackThis and choose scan only. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [KernelFaultCheck] %systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 -k
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [xyaracfvxi] c:\windows\system32\xyaracfvxi.exe xyaracfvxi

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked.

Reboot into safe mode by restarting your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

2. Please delete these files using Windows Explorer (if present):
  • Click Start>>All Programs>>Accessories>>Windows Explorer
  • Navigate to the listed files, then right-click to select them and click delete:

c:\windows\system32\xyaracfvxi.exe

Let me know if you cannot find this file!

After that, Reboot.

3. Update Java and Remove old Java Versions
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 9.<== scroll down the list to find THIS entry
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
Remove older Java Versions:
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start >> Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
Install latest Java Version:
  • From your desktop, double-click on jre-1_5_0_09-windows-i586-p to install the newest version.

4. Please go HERE to run Panda's ActiveScan
  • Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
  • A new window will open...click the Check Now button
  • Enter your Country
  • Enter your State/Province
  • Enter your e-mail address and click send
  • Select either Home User or Company
  • Click the big Scan Now button
  • If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
  • It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
  • When download is complete, click on My Computer to start the scan
  • When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location.

5. Post the contents of the ActiveScan report and a new HJT log.

Good job Jenny....your HJT log appears 'clean', and it's great that Panda came up empty too!

How is your computer doing now? Any problems?

If not, we can finish up....let me know.

Good Morning

Yep my computer is behaving nicely now thank you....I did download MailSkinner a week or so ago then decided it wasn't "behaving" so I uninstalled it, do you think that was the cause? I have a feeling that when my problems started.

I really appreciate your help in this so once again thanks so much.

I will await your "finishing up" instructions.

Kindest Regards
Jenny xx

Hey Jenny.....that's great news. You are welcome!

Regarding mailskinner, here are some references:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/startup ... 13171.html

http://virusinfo.prevx.com/viruscenter. ... 4826200019

It's a 'baddie'.....

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
  • THIS IS IMPORTANT! - If you are using Windows XP then you should reset system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point and that you have a clean restore point should you need one!

Now let's reset your restore points.

Click Start Menu >> All Programs >> Accessories >> System Tools >> SystemRestore

Press OK. Choose 'Create a Restore Point' then Next. Name it and press 'Create' then when the confirmation screen shows the restore point has been created click 'Close'.

Next go to Start Menu >> Run, then type:

    cleanmgr

click OK, when Disk Cleanup opens go to the 'More Options' tab and press 'Cleanup' on the system restore area which will remove all the restore points except the one we just created. To close Disk Cleanup and remove the Temporary Internet Files detected in the initial scan click OK then choose Yes on the confirmation window.

  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    • Click once on the Security tab
    • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    • Click once on the Custom Level button.
      • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable

The following is a list of tools and utilities that I like to suggest to people. This list is full of great tools and utilities to help you understand how you got infected and how to keep from getting infected again.
  • Spybot Search & Destroy- Uber powerful tool which can search and annhilate nasties that make it onto your system. Now with an Immunize section that will help prevent future infections.
  • AdAware - Another very powerful tool which searches and kills nasties that infect your system. AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy compliment each other very well.
  • SpywareBlaster - Great prevention tool to keep nasties from installing on your system.
  • SpywareGuard - Works as a Spyware "Shield" to protect your computer from getting malware in the first place.
  • IE-SpyAd - puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
  • ATF Cleaner by Atribune. This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only. ATF is a new, freeware, temporary file cleaner for Windows, IE, Firefox and Opera with a simple, easy-to-use interface. The main screen allows the user to either clean all temporary files, or select files for cleaning. The program also knows if Firefox and or Opera is being used, and gives the option of cleaning the temporary files associated with those applications.
To find out more information about how you got infected in the first place and some great guidelines to follow to prevent future infections you can read this article by Tony Klein. These are excellent reads too: I'm not pulling your leg and Malware: Preventing the Infection
