Have I caught costrat.i (rkrustok-d)?

Unread postby db_legrl » November 12th, 2006, 12:48 pm

Hi Folks,

I'm stuck. I think I have a trojan, but it's proving somewhat devilish to deal with. When I scan with anitvirus or antispyware, I get the lovely BSOD and a stop error 0x000044 MULTIPLE_IRP_COMPLETE_REQUESTS

This happens with AD-AWARE, AVG-Antispyware and BITDEFENDER and seems to happen whenever the scanner hits the c:\windows\system32 directory.

The only thing I've been able to discern is from AVG-Antispyware where I caught a glimpse of the identified trojan before the BSOD hit.

The label was hijack.costrat.i which according to SOPHOS is really RKRustock-D.
http://www.sophos.com/security/analyses ... stokd.html

I also can cause the BSOD simply by using windows explorer to look at c:\windows\system32.

I'm in windows XP pro with no new hardware (although I did just download windows defender...)

Where do I start? Thanks in advance for any help

Hi db_legrl and welcome to the Malware Removal forums.
My name is Vino Rosso - if it helps, you can call me Vino for short. I would be glad to help you with solving any malware problems. This can take a little time to research and, while I complete my training, all my recommended fixes will be checked by an expert.

Please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:
  • I will working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Finally, please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
1 - Download, Install, and Run HijackThis
Download a copy of HJTsetup.exe from >here< and save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click HJTsetup.exe to begin installation.
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
  • Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Addition Tasks dialogue.
  • Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
  • Continue to follow the prompts from there.
  • At the final dialogue box check the box to the left of "Launch Hijackthis" and then click Finish
  • When HijackThis has started, click on Do a system scan and save a log file
  • Copy the log file (highlight ALL the text and press (Ctrl + C) and paste it (Ctrl + V) in your reply to this thread.
Do not try to fix anything yet! HijackThis shows lots of good files as well as bad.

Thanks
Vino

Hi Vino,

I may have already got it - I found srvmdihyvr.exe in the system directory, cleaned it up and everything seems to scan clean now. But, since the motto is to never give up until safely clean, here is the latest HijackThis file.

What do you think?

Hi db_legrl

You log appears clean but this is only one tool used in detecting malware. As you have already got rid of something, let's do one more scan to check that all's OK.

1 - Panda Online Scan
Please go >here< to run Panda's ActiveScan
  • Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
  • A new window will open...click the Check Now button
  • Enter your Country
  • Enter your State/Province
  • Enter your e-mail address and click send
  • Select either Home User or Company
  • Click the big Scan Now button
  • If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
  • It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan. Note: This may take a couple of minutes
  • When download is complete, click on My Computer to start the scan
  • When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location.
Please post the report with your next reply.

Thanks
Vino

Hi Vino,

It's back. I can only seem to work in safe mode. Anything else I try ends up with the BSOD after a few seconds. The following is the Panada scan.

Hi db_legrl

Bad news about the infection returning. You may have already looked at information about the Rustock infection and what it does. If not, please have a look at the Sophos web site >here<. To explain further, please read through this page >here< at Wiki which tells you about Trojans.

OK, let's try the following:

1 - Rustock Infection
Download http://www.uploads.ejvindh.net/rustbfix.exe
...and save it to your desktop.

Double click on rustbfix.exe to run the tool.
If a Rustock infection is found, you will shortly be asked to reboot the computer.
The reboot will probably take quite a while and perhaps two reboots will be needed but this will happen automatically.
After the reboot, two logfiles will open (C:\avenger.txt & C:\rustbfix\pelog.txt).

2 - Check on status
After you have completed the above, please reboot and provide:
  • the avenger.txt report
  • the pelog.txt report
  • a new HijackThis log
Good Luck

Hi Vino,

You are some kind of genius! I've been up and stable now for 3+ hours.

Anything else I should do? Do you see anything in the hijackthis log?

Hi db_legrl

db_legrl wrote:I've been up and stable now for 3+ hours.
Hopefully, everything is still ok?

1 - Program Download
Please download to your Desktop ATF Cleaner by Atribune from >here<. This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only. It does not require any installation and uses minimal system resources. It is set up to clean IE, FireFox and Opera, and detects the browsers you have and greys out the other(s).
We will use this program later.

You have a number of anti-spyware/protection programs which we will need to disable so HijackThis fixes will work.

2 - Disable Protection Programs

AVG Anti-Spyware
Open AVG-AS's Guard and select Deactivate Guard under the 'Additional' menu.
Reboot to complete the change.

BitDefender
Double click the taskbar icon for BitDefender in the lower-right corner of the screen
Click Virus Shield
UNcheck Virus Shield is enabled - this will turn the words red Virus Shield is disabled
Close BitDefender

Spyware Doctor
Open Spyware Doctor and click the Onguard button to the left.
Remove the check from the Activate OnGuard option in the next window to disable all protection.

Note: Remember to re-enable the above protection when we have completed our fixes.

3 - Run HJT Scan
Run a scan with HijackThis and tick the following entries, if present:
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {BA52B914-B692-46c4-B683-905236F6F655} - (no file)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [KernelFaultCheck] %systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 -k

Close all windows except HijackThis
Select Fix Checked in HijackThis.

4 - Delete Temporary Files
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Select Files To Delete choose: Select All
If you rely on system remembered passwords, you should UNcheck Cookies.
Important Do not uncheck anything else!
Click the Empty Selected button.

If you use Firefox browser
Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All EXCEPT FIREFOX SAVED PASSWORDS
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

If you use Opera browser
Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All EXCEPT COOKIES AND SAVED PASSWORDS
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your cookies and saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

5 - AVG Anti-Spyware Preparation
Please launch AVG-AS
  • On the main screen under Your Computer's security.
    • Click on Change state next to Resident shield. It should now change to inactive.
    • Click on Change state next to Automatic updates. It should now change to inactive.
    • Next to Last Update, click on Update now. (You will need an active internet connection to perform this.)
    • Wait until you see the Update Successful message.
  • Right-click the AVG Anti-Spyware Tray Icon and uncheck Start with Windows.
  • Right-click the AVG Anti-Spyware Tray Icon and select Exit. Confirm by clicking Yes.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update AVG >AVG Anti-Spyware manual updates<.
Download the Full database to your Desktop or to your usual Download Folder and install it by double clicking the file. Make sure that AVG Anti-Spyware is closed before installing the update.

Close ALL open Windows / Programs / Folders. Please start AVG Anti-Spyware and run a full scan.
  • Click on Scanner on the toolbar.
  • Click on the Settings tab.
    • Under How to act?
      • Click on Recommended Action and choose Quarantine from the popup menu.
    • Under How to scan?
      • All checkboxes should be ticked.
    • Under Possibly unwanted software:
      • All checkboxes should be ticked.
    • Under Reports:
      • Select Automatically generate report after every scan and uncheck Only if threats were found.
    • Under What to scan?
      • Select Scan every file.
  • Click on the Scan tab.
  • Click on Complete System Scan to start the scan process.
  • Let the program scan the machine.
  • When the scan has finished, follow the instructions below.

IMPORTANT : Don't click on the "Save Scan Report" button before you did hit the "Apply all Actions" button.

    • Make sure that Set all elements to: shows Quarantine (1), if not click on the link and choose Quarantine from the popup menu. (2)
    • At the bottom of the window click on the Apply all Actions button. (3)
      Image
  • When done, click the Save Scan Report button. (4)
    • Click the Save Report as button.
    • Save the report to your Desktop.
  • Right-click the AVG Anti-Spyware Tray Icon and select Exit. Confirm by clicking Yes.
Re-boot into Normal Mode.

6 - Kaspersky Online Scan
Please do an online scan with >Kaspersky Online Scanner<. You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then start to download the latest definition files.
  • Once the scanner is installed and the definitions downloaded, click Next.
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:
o Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
+ Extended (If available otherwise Standard)
    o Scan Options:
    + Scan Archives
    + Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan select My Computer
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run. Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
  • Now click on the Save as Text button
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.
7 - Check on status
After you have completed the above, please reboot and provide:
  • the AVG Anti-Spyware report
  • Kaspersky Scan report
  • a new HijackThis log
  • and a description of how your PC is behaving - what problems are you now experiencing?
Remember, if you can, it's worth printing these instructions out before you start.

Good Luck

Hi Vino,

Thanks for the instructions - they were most precise. I've done them all . Following are the logs from AVG-AS, Kaspersky and HijackThis, as you requested.

In general my PC is behaving well. It is stable and I can run in normal mode. I'm not really experiencing any apparent problems, at the GUI level anyway ('')

So what's next?

Thanks again for what you've done so far. You folks do have an amazing community.

Hi db_legrl

Given the type of infection your computer had, I would like to do a couple of precautionary steps.

Please print these instructions for reference

1 - Manual Deletion Of Temporary Files
The various temporary folders that exist on your computer can be used to hide all manner of things so we need to be absolutely sure they are emptied.
Please re-boot your computer into Safe Mode and do NOT open any program other than Windows Explorer
Boot your PC into Safe Mode by restarting your computer and keep tapping F8 until the menu appears.
Use your up and down arrow keys to select Safe Mode.
We will continue your fix in Safe Mode.

Using Windows Explorer, delete the following:

C:\WINDOWS\Temp <== Delete the entire content of this folder, not the Temp folder itself
C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temp <== Delete the entire content of this folder, not the Temp folder itself
Repeat this instruction to delete the content of the \Local Settings\Temp folder for ALL usernames in the C:\Documents and Settings folder.

Re-boot your computer into Normal Mode

2 - Download and Run ComboFix
Download ComboFix from >here< to your Desktop
Double click combofix.exe follow the prompts
When finished, the program will produce a log for you
Post that log in your next reply

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.

3 - Check on status
After you have completed the above, please reboot and provide:
  • the ComboFix log
  • a new HijackThis log
Remember, if you can, it's worth printing these instructions out before you start.

Good Luck

Hi Vino,

In safe mode I cleaned out the temp directories under c:\windows and each username in Local Settings - and then rebooted into normal mode and ran ComboFix and HijackThis.

Hi

While I'm going through the ComboFix log, could you let me know how your computer is behaving? Any problems being experienced?

Thanks

Hi Vino,

The computer has been stable and apparently running fine since last Friday night when I ran rustbfix.exe. The scans run fine and sometime show cookies and a few adware pieces, etc. but nothing seems to be interfering with how the machine functions. I had no trouble at all implementing your recommendations. The applications I have run seem fine, and my firewall shows no suspicious activity or traffic out of the ('')

No sign at all of the BSODs that were regular occurring with the virus.

Thanks again for your help, and let me know if I need to go further.
