Computer acting a little strange. HJT log included

Unread postby Dextroman584 » November 3rd, 2006, 11:32 am

Hi. Last night my computer did something a little odd so now I'm concerned that I may be infected by something. When I booted my computer up last night, as soon as the desktop appeared, my system crashed and automatically rebooted. When it booted up again, I got a message stating that Microsoft had encountered a serious error. Everything seems to be running fine now except that the fact that Zone Alarm seems to be reset, meaning that I still get messages when something like AIM is trying to access the internet and I have to tell it once again to allow it. All of my programs have been reset with Zone Alarm. Anyways, here is my HJT log:

Hello Dextroman584 and Welcome to Malware Removal,

Let's start with a couple of scans please.

Now run this online scan using Internet Explorer:
Kaspersky Online Scanner from http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner

Next Click on Launch Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
  • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
  • Standard
  • Scan Options:
  • Scan Archives
  • Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:
  • Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
  • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.

Copy and paste that information from Kapersky in your next post.

STEP 1.
======
GMER
Please create a new subfolder in the Program Files folder called GMER. If you have an older version of GMER installed, you must delete it.
  • Download GMER and extract it to the C:\program files\GMER folder.
  • Run the Gmer.exe program by double-clicking the executable file (gmer.exe) in Windows Explorer.
You may be prompted to scan immediately if GMER detects rootkit activity.
    • If you are prompted to scan your system click "yes" to begin the scan.
    • If you are not prompted, Click the "Rootkit" tab, then click "Scan".

At the end of the scan, click "Copy" to copy the scan results to the clipboard. Then paste the results in a notepad file and also paste them back in a reply here.

Please post the results of Kapersky log and gmer

Also, my computer has many bad drivers for some reason. I uploaded the pictures that show the results:

I would recommend that you go to Add/Remove Programs and uninstall the following:

Kazaa 3.0 - can be infected
SE Assistant - Adware
SE Help -Adware
Search Assistant - Adware
Search Function – Adware

I would also uninstall Limewire and download the newest version

I believe that your main problems may be driver-related.

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/com ... opten.mspx
Miscellaneous issues
Internet Explorer freezes, shuts down without warning, or the computer reboots.
This problem is often caused by out-of-date video drivers. Go to the Web site run by the manufacturer of your video card and download, then install, the latest (non-beta) drivers for your video card.Alternatively, you can try the following:
1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
2. Click Display (in classic view of Windows XP), click the Settings tab, and then click Advanced.
3. Click the Performance or Troubleshooting tab (depending on your operating system), and then reduce hardware acceleration a notch at a time until your system stabilizes.

I am afraid that I do not have much experience with updating drivers. I just know that bad drivers can cause problems. You may want to try the hp.com website but I did not locate anything for the hp 061.
http://h20180.www2.hp.com/apps/Nav?h_pa ... g=en&cc=us

Another website I would recommend is:
http://www.computerhope.com/drivers/index.htm

I am sorry that I cannot help you more.

Thanks for the advice. I'll check into the drivers and see if that helps. Also, I tried to uninstall all of the programs that you advised and it seems that they were already uninstalled but not taken off the list. Thanks again though.
