WinAntiVirus Virus

Unread postby Robbo » July 30th, 2006, 5:32 am

Hi Folks,

My computer is plagued with message boxes popping up telling me that my wife is going to find out what porn sites I have been surfing (I haven't by the way) unless I download their software. When I cancel the message box, it opens an explorer window with WinAntiVirus or DriveCleaner ready to be downloaded. My McAfee virus checker cannot find anything wrong, neither can Prevx.

I have run HijackThis and the log appears below.

Can anyone help please?

Robbo

Hello Robbo...welcome to MRU!

Hmmm...there are no Vundo entries that I expected to see in your HJT log.

There are Vundo variants that suspend from running when HJT is scanning, so let's do this:

Navigate to your HijackThis file in Windows explorer and rename it to AnalyzeThis.exe.

Once you've done this, rescan and post another logfile for me to review...

Hello Robbo....interesting, they are still not there.

If you are getting WinAntiVirus warnings, let's try and run VundoFix and see what it finds:

Credit: Atribune

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Put a check next to Run VundoFix as a task.
  • You will receive a message saying vundofix will close and re-open in a minute or less. Click OK
  • When VundoFix re-opens, click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will shutdown your computer, click OK.
  • Turn your computer back on.
  • Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log.

Sadly, VundoFix found nothing. Here's its log:

VundoFix V5.1.5

Running as SYSTEM
from c:\windows\system32\VundoFix.exe

Checking Java version...

Java version is 1.5.0.3

Scan started at 17:46:03 30/07/2006

Listing files found while scanning....

No infected files were found.

Beginning removal...

Just to rub it in, whilst VundoFix was running, a WinAntiVirus message box popped up!

Here is the next HijackThis log:

Maybe it's all related to your CWS infection (which we'll get to in a minute)..Let's check one more thing before we move on:

Download and Save Blacklight to your desktop:

Double-click blbeta.exe then accept the agreement, leave [X]scan through Windows Explorer checked, click > scan then > next

You'll see a list of all items found. There will also be a log on your desktop with the name fsbl.xxxxxxx.log (the xxxxxxx stand for numbers).

Copy and paste this log in your next reply. Don't choose the rename option yet! I want to see the log first, because legitimate items can also be present there, such as "wbemtest.exe"

Hi Navigator,

I can't get your link to work. Could you check if it's still valid?

Think there might be a recent version change as I couldn't see the 'scan through windows explorer' check box. The Backlight program found no hidden items. Here is the log:

That's good....let's get rid of CWS and run Ewido:

1. First download ewido anti-spyware from HERE and save that file to your desktop.
This is a 30 day trial of the program
  1. Once you have downloaded ewido anti-spyware, locate the icon on the desktop and double-click it to launch the set up program.
  2. Once the setup is complete you will need run ewido and update the definition files.
  3. On the main screen select the icon "Update" then select the "Update now" link.
    • Next select the "Start Update" button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  4. Once the update has completed select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
  5. Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
  6. Under "Reports"
    • Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
    • Un-Select "Only if threats were found"
Close ewido anti-spyware, Do Not run a scan just yet, we will shortly.

2. You have a CoolWebSearch infection.

Download CWShredder Here to its own folder.

Update CWShredder
  • Open CWShredder and click I AGREE
  • Click Check For Update
  • Close CWShredder

3. Boot into Safe Mode:
Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode. Log in to your usual account.

4. Now run CWShredder. Click I Agree, then Fix and then Next, let it fix everything it asks about.

5. Lauch ewido-anti-spyware by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
  • IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while ewido is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning proccess:
  • Select the "Scanner" icon at the top and then the "Scan" tab then click on "Complete System Scan".
  • ewido will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
Once the scan is complete do the following:
  • If you have any infections you will prompted, then select "Apply all actions"
  • Next select the "Reports" icon at the top.
  • Select the "Save report as" button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system (make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important).
  • Close ewido and reboot your system back into Normal Mode .

Post the results of the ewido report scan and a new HJT log.

Hello Robbo....

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked.

3. Please go HERE to run Panda's ActiveScan

4. Open HijackThis, click Config, click Misc Tools

Thanks Nav. The Atribune website appears to be down at the moment so I'm stuck. I'll try again later. R
