Need help with hijackthis log

Unread postby Coastie » July 19th, 2006, 7:45 pm

This is my first post..let me start by saying that I don't know much about computers but have been researching and reading this forum trying to fix my problem. Very good site by the way. I have win32.qhost.df trojan on my computer and can not get rid of it. etrust pestpatrol finds it and deletes it, but when I turn on my computer it's right back on there. I have run spyware doctor, etrust pestpatrol ad-ware se and a few others as suggested in this forum then scanned with highjackthis to get a log and now I'm looking for assistance on what to do next. I really don't want to call geek squad. Anyway here's the log.

Hello Coastie...

You may want to print out these instructions for reference, since you will have to restart your computer during the fix.

Please download FixWareout from one of these sites:
http://downloads.subratam.org/Fixwareout.exe
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/l ... areout.exe

Save it to your desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish.
The fix will begin; follow the prompts. You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so. Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.

Once the desktop loads a text file will open (report.txt), you can close it - the file has already been saved.

Run HijackThis. Click "Do a System Scan Only", and place a check next to the following items (if found):

R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {AF0275A7-4444-A6EC-5DE8-F246EE54F5B1} - RtlFindVal.dll (file missing)
O1 - Hosts: localhost 127.0.0.1
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [dmmek.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\dmmek.exe

O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{7723D5DE-0D66-4148-BC4F-E77BB184165E}: NameServer = 85.255.116.172,85.255.112.62

O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{FE6589F4-0725-4014-A5A2-55FB539AB402}: NameServer = 85.255.116.172,85.255.112.62
O17 - HKLM\System\CS1\Services\Tcpip\Parameters: NameServer = 85.255.116.172 85.255.112.62
O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\Parameters: NameServer = 85.255.116.172 85.255.112.62

Close all other windows except HJT and then click FIX CHECKED. Close HijackThis.

Finally, please post the contents of the text file that opened earlier (you can find it at C:\fixwareout\report.txt ), along with a new HijackThis log into this topic.

If you lose internet connectivity after doing the Wareout fix above, please do the following:

Before doing this write down all the settings, Note that not all system/setups even have these settings, While some connection services will require them.

In the windows control panel: If you are using Windows XP's Category View, select the Network and Internet Connections category otherwise double click on Network Connections. Then right click on your default connection, usually local area connection for cable and dsl, and left click on properties. Click the Networking tab. Double-click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item and select the radio dial that says Obtain DNS servers automatically

Press OK twice to get out of the properties screen and reboot if it asks.
That option might not be avaiable one some systems
Next Go start run type cmd and hit OK
type
ipconfig /flushdns <==(note the space between g and / is needed)

then hit enter, type exit hit enter

Hello Coastie....we're getting there:

1.
First download ewido anti-spyware from HERE and save that file to your desktop.
This is a 30 day trial of the program
  1. Once you have downloaded ewido anti-spyware, locate the icon on the desktop and double-click it to launch the set up program.
  2. Once the setup is complete you will need run ewido and update the definition files.
  3. On the main screen select the icon "Update" then select the "Update now" link.
    • Next select the "Start Update" button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  4. Once the update has completed select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
  5. Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
  6. Under "Reports"
    • Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
    • Un-Select "Only if threats were found"
Close ewido anti-spyware, Do Not run a scan just yet, we will shortly.

2. Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
    Under Main choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browser
Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browser
Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

3. Please download the Killbox by Option^Explicit.

Note: In the event you already have Killbox, this is a new version that I need you to download.
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Please double-click Killbox.exe to run it.
  • Select:
    • Delete on Reboot
    • then Click on the All Files button.
  • Please copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy):

    C:\WINDOWS\System32\CSNJJ.EXE
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DMKBN.EXE
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DMOHJ.EXE
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\{66CF0C3E-05FD-4641-BCE9-E899D1EC5FFE}.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\{FADBCF45-A4A4-4C88-A2DB-3E43002B5969}.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\{72261B8D-6AC5-4E1D-B6A0-3083E98C29A8}.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\{46A859C4-5B7E-4504-9EB0-FA692826FD6F}.exe

  • Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose Paste from Clipboard.
  • Click the red-and-white Delete File button. Click Yes at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click OK at any PendingFileRenameOperations prompt (and please let me know if you receive this message!).

If your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually.

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run Killbox, click here to download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try Killbox again.

4. When your computer reboots, reboot into SafeMode. You can do this by continually tapping the F8 key after the restart until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight SafeMode then hit enter.

5. The following are programs you need to remove...Kill and Clean is a definite baddie. Until recently, AdwareAlert was considered rogue also and there are better alternatives so you should probably remove it too (for reference, please see here: http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm ) .

Please remove these entries from Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel(if present). Click start>>control panel>>add/remove programs:

Kill and Clean
AdwareAlert

6. IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while ewido is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning proccess:
  • Lauch ewido-anti-spyware by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
  • Select the "Scanner" icon at the top and then the "Scan" tab then click on "Complete System Scan".
  • ewido will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
Once the scan is complete do the following:
  • If you have any infections you will prompted, then select "Apply all actions"
  • Next select the "Reports" icon at the top.
  • Select the "Save report as" button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system (make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important).
  • Close ewido and reboot your system back into Normal Mode.

7. Please go HERE to run Panda's ActiveScan
  • Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
  • A new window will open...click the Check Now button
  • Enter your Country
  • Enter your State/Province
  • Enter your e-mail address and click send
  • Select either Home User or Company
  • Click the big Scan Now button
  • If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
  • It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
  • When download is complete, click on My Computer to start the scan
  • When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location. Post the contents of the ActiveScan report

7. Post back with:
  • the results of the ewido report scan
  • the Panda ActiveScan report
  • a new HJT log
  • let me know how your computer is running

Hello Coastie.....no problem, family comes first! Hopefully not too much more to do....

1. Please do this:
  • Copy the contents of the Quote Box below to Notepad (click start>>run and type notepad in the open box).
  • Name the file as fix.reg
  • Change the Save as Type to All Files
  • and Save it on the desktop

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\extensions\CmdMapping]
"{BF69DF00-2734-477F-8257-27CD04F88779}"=-

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Ext\Stats\{BF69DF00-2734-477F-8257-27CD04F88779}]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Extensions\{BF69DF00-2734-477F-8257-27CD04F88779}]

Make sure there are NO blank lines before REGEDIT4
Make sure there IS one blank line at the end of the file.

Then double-click on the fix.reg file, and when it prompts to merge say yes, and this will clear the registry entries left behind by the malware.

2. Go here and download and install JRE 5.0 Update 7. Click the link that says Download JRE 5.0 Update 7. You will then need to select Accept License Agreement and click the Continue button that is beside it. Then click the link that says Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language. Save it to your Desktop. Then go back to your Desktop and double click jre-1_5_0_07-windows-i586-p.exe to start the install.

Once you have it installed, click Start>>Run, type in appwiz.cpl and hit Enter. From the list, uninstall J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 and any older versions of Java on your system .

3. Let's do one more online scan:

TrendMicroâ„¢ HouseCall Java Scan
  • Please go HERE to run the Trend Microâ„¢ HouseCall Scan.
  • Click Scan now. It's free!
  • Read and put a Check next to Yes I accept the terms of use.
  • Click the Launching HouseCall>> button.
  • Under Using Java-based HouseCall kernel click the Starting HouseCall>> button.
  • You may receive a Security Warning about the TrendMicro Java applet, click YES.
  • Under Scan complete computer for malware, grayware, and vulnerabilities click the Next>> button.
  • Please be patient while it installs, updates, and scans your system.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will take you to the summary page.
  • Under Cleanup options, choose clean all detected infections automatically.
  • Click the Clean now>> button.
  • If anything was found you may be prompted to run the scan again, you can just close the browser window.

Let me know of anything it cannot 'clean'..

4 Post back with a new HJT log and let me know if your computer is still without problems!

Can't seem to get TrendMicro to download. It starts and the status bar gets about half way and that's it. I stopped the process and started the download again and it did the same thing. It has been over 30 minutes and the status bar has not moved. The task manager has the status as running. I'll wait and see if it keeps going.

Hey Coastie....

Not sure why there's a problem with TrendMicro....your last scan was pretty clean, I just wanted to check one more scan for completeness sake. Are you on dial-up or DSL/cable?

Try this scan instead of TrendMicro:

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner

Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
      Scan Archives
      Scan Mail Bases

  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:
      Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
    • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.

If you can get the scan to run, post the Kaspersky log and a new HJT log. Is your computer still doing well?

Hello Coastie....actually, that Kaspersky scan is OK...the locked objects are OK and all of the viruses/malware I see are either in Symantec quarantine (you can delete the Symantec quarantine items) or system restore which we'll get rid of in a minute....

Your HJT appears clean and I'm glad your system is running well with out problems!

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
  • THIS IS IMPORTANT! - If you are using Windows XP then you should reset system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point and that you have a clean restore point should you need one!

Now let's reset your restore points:

Click Start Menu >> All Programs >> Accessories >> System Tools >> SystemRestore

Press OK. Choose 'Create a Restore Point' then Next. Name it and press 'Create' then when the confirmation screen shows the restore point has been created click 'Close'.

Next go to Start Menu >> Run, then type:

    cleanmgr

click OK, when Disk Cleanup opens go to the 'More Options' tab and press 'Cleanup' on the system restore area which will remove all the restore points except the one we just created. To close Disk Cleanup and remove the Temporary Internet Files detected in the initial scan click OK then choose Yes on the confirmation window.
  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    • Click once on the Security tab
    • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    • Click once on the Custom Level button.
      • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
    • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
    • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
The following is a list of tools and utilities that I like to suggest to people. This list is full of great tools and utilities to help you understand how you got infected and how to keep from getting infected again.
  • Spybot Search & Destroy- Uber powerful tool which can search and annhilate nasties that make it onto your system. Now with an Immunize section that will help prevent future infections.
  • AdAware - Another very powerful tool which searches and kills nasties that infect your system. AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy compliment each other very well.
  • SpywareBlaster - Great prevention tool to keep nasties from installing on your system.
  • SpywareGuard - Works as a Spyware "Shield" to protect your computer from getting malware in the first place.
  • IE-SpyAd - puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
  • ATF Cleaner by Atribune. This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only. ATF is a new, freeware, temporary file cleaner for Windows, IE, Firefox and Opera with a simple, easy-to-use interface. The main screen allows the user to either clean all temporary files, or select files for cleaning. The program also knows if Firefox and or Opera is being used, and gives the option of cleaning the temporary files associated with those applications.
  • Windows Updates - It is very important to make sure that both Internet Explorer and Windows are kept current with the latest critical security patches from Microsoft. To do this just start Internet Explorer and select Tools > Windows Update, and follow the online instructions from there.
  • Google Toolbar - Free google toolbar that allows you to use the powerful Google search engine from the bar, but also blocks pop up windows.
  • Trillian or Miranda-IM - These are Malware free Instant Messenger programs which allow you to connect to multiple IM services in one program! (AOL, Yahoo, ICQ, IRC, MSN)
To find out more information about how you got infected in the first place and some great guidelines to follow to prevent future infections you can read this article by Tony Klein. This an excellent read too: I'm not pulling your leg

Remember...be careful out there!
