Welcome !! Please take note of the following while we are working together:
  • Your fix may take a couple posts so please be patient even if you don't see immediate results.
  • I will working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for the issues on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine is clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's definitely better to be sure and safe than sorry.

***************************************

Please install an antivirus and firewall first, because it doesn't make any sense to remove malware from your system if no scanner is preventing them from reinfecting your computer.

AVG Anti-Virus, Avira OR Avast Home Edition are good FREE antivirus scanners.
After installing ONE antivirus program, download the latest signatures, and do a full system scan.

Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over:
Kerio Personal Firewall OR ZoneAlarm are good FREE firewalls.

=> Read this link:Understanding and using firewalls to learn more about using firewalls <=

VERY IMPORTANT: Never install more than ONE antivirus scanner and firewall on your system! Several together can give problems and decrease the reliability of them seriously!

Download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop.
http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix.zip
Extract all the files to your Destop. A folder named SmitfraudFix will be created on your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press Enter
This program will scan large amounts of files on your computer for known patterns so please be patient while it works. When it is done, the results of the scan will be displayed and it will create a log named rapport.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other options until you are asked to do so!

Open HijackThis, click Config, click Misc Tools
Click "Open Uninstall Manager"
Click "Save List" (generates uninstall_list.txt)
Click Save, copy and paste the results in your next post.

In your next post, please include
  • new hijackthis log
  • smitfraudfix log
  • uninstall list

Thank you so much Agrarian Monk,

On the advice of a friend, I tried a system restore to 31st May and this has corrected another problem I was having but the spamming is still around alas.

I attach a revised HJT and SmitFraudFix log. Hope you can guide me through this slightly changed proposition. Many thanks!

Hi Mark in Kingston,

I notice this is the 4th time you've posted on our forums. While all of us are very happy to help you, it is very discouraging when we post a response but fail to hear back from you. We spend quite a bit of time researching each log and composing a response so please give me the courtesy of sticking with me until you get the "all clear" speech.

******************************

There is a difference between a hardware firewall and a software firewall. A hardware firewall can prevent attacks from the outside, but when malware already exists on your computer, which in your situation it clearly does, only a software firewall can prevent it from communicating with the outside and downloading other malware. Therefore, I highly recommend you install a software firewall:

Kerio Personal Firewall OR ZoneAlarm are good FREE firewalls.

*******************************

Please remove these entries from Add or Remove Programs in the Control Panel(if present):

Telepay
WebEx

The following are optional; however, any time your are running any type of P2P application, you are FAR more prone to infection by malware. Your current infections are likely due to P2P use.

Bittorrent

Please note any other programs that you dont recognize in that list in your next response

(an easy way to get to Add or Remove programs is to go to start-->run and type appwiz.cpl)

***************************************

Please print out or copy these instructions/tutorial to Notepad as the internet will not be (while in Safe Mode) available to you at certain points of the removal process. Make sure to work through all the Steps in the exact order in which they are listed below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before moving on with the fixes.

Please download Ewido to your Desktop or to your usual Download Folder.
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
  • Install Ewido by double clicking the installer.
  • Follow the prompts. Make sure that Launch Ewido is checked.
  • On the main screen under Your Computer's security.
    • Click on Change state next to Resident shield. It should now change to inactive.
    • Next to Last Update, click on Update now. (You will need an active internet connection to perform this)
    • Wait until you see the Update succesfull message.
Note: If the Update now option is grayed out, follow the steps below.
      • Click on Update on the toolbar.
      • Under Manual update, click on the Start Update button.
      • Wait until you see the Update succesfull message.
  • Right-click the Ewido Tray Icon and select Exit. Confirm by clicking Yes.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.
Ewido manual updates.
Download the Full database to your Desktop or to your usual Download Folder and install it by double clicking the file. Make sure that Ewido is closed before installing the update.

  • Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
  • Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
  • Login on your usual account.

A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process, if you computer does not restart automatically please do it yourself manually. Reboot in Safe Mode.

Thank you Agrarian,

Please rest assured that I do follow all your advice to the end. I usually post a final thank you but somethimes the subject has dropped off the forum and I don't know where to reply to then.

The reason for the repeat attacks would seem to be a clash between two firewalls I think I have - one with my ISP and one with my Belkin router.

Your suggestion of the software firewall sounds a long term solution. If it has been suggested before, I have assumed you meant a hardware fix.

Please be assured I have the utmost respect for the service you all provide. I will be making a donation to you.

I will run thru the prognosis tonight. Fingers crossed.

Many thanks

Next, we need to Reveal Hidden Files

1. Click Start.
2. Open My Computer.
3. Select Tools menu
4. Click Folder Options.
5. Select the View Tab.
6. Select Show hidden files and folders in the Hidden files and folders section.
7. Uncheck Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
8. Uncheck the Hide file extensions for known file types option.
9. Click Yes.
10. Click OK.

Delete these files/folders

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\bde3d_refp4.dll << file
C:\WINDOWS\switchagreement.txt << file
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Totem Shared\ << folder
C:\Kazaa\ << folder
C:\My Documents\FPH Files 29Nov05\Personal\Kazaa\ << folder

then, post a new hijackthis log

also let me know how your computer is running and if any problems persist.

please let me know in your next post.

**********************

Updating Java and Clearing Cache
  1. Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on the Java Icon (coffee cup) in the Control Panel.
  2. It will say "Java Plug-in" under the icon.
Please find the update button or tab in the Java Control Panel. Update your Java then reboot.
  3. If you are unable to update you can manually update by going here:
  4. After the reboot, go back into the Control Panel and double-click the Java Icon.
  5. Under Temporary Internet Files, click the Delete Files button.
  6. There are three options in the window to clear the cache - Leave ALL 3 Checked
      Downloaded Applets
      Downloaded Applications
      Other Files

  7. Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window
Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.
  8. Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.

*you'll want to remove all previous versions of Java using add/remove programs (the latest version is J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 7).

Thanks Agrarian,
The performance of the machine seems almost there. Up to your last post everything was running slick except when accessing the internet connection. Two out of three attempts failed and normally required a reboot of pc, router and modem. I'd guess now that that may have been due to having various versions of Java hanging around? -I appeared to have three Java files in my program files -Java. Java (2) and Java (3) and may well have had Java 7 already running at the same time as Java 6. Would this have caused the apparent clash at internet start up?

Anyways, the web is now working very quickly. Hope the log in issue is solved from applying your last piece of advice.

Many thanks

Congratulations, your log looks clean! Are you having any other problems?

If not, we have just a couple of last steps to perform and then you're all set.

First, let's reset your hidden/system files and folders. System files are hidden for a reason and we don't want to have them openly available and susceptible to accidental deletion.

    * Click Start.
    * Open My Computer.
    * Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
    * Select the View tab.
    * Under the Hidden files and folders heading UNSELECT Show hidden files and folders.
    * CHECK the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
    * Click Yes to confirm.
    * Click OK.

Next, let's clean your restore points and set a new one:

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs from changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected)
    1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
      Click Properties.
      Click the System Restore tab.
      Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

    2. Restart your computer.

    3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
      Click Properties.
      Click the System Restore tab.
      UN-Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

System Restore will now be active again.

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs:
  • SpywareBlaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
  • SpywareGuard to catch and block spyware before it can execute.
  • IESpy-Ad to block access to malicious websites so you cannot be redirected to them from an infected site or email.

To keep your operating system up to date visit
monthly. And to keep your system clean run these free malware scanners

weekly, and be aware of what emails you open and websites you visit.

To learn more about how to protect yourself while on the internet read this article by Tony Klien: So how did I get infected in the first place?

Have a safe and happy computing day!

Final thankyou!

Thank you once again Agrarian,

Have downloaded and run AdAware and Spybot and will get the other 3 you recommended asap.

I still have an intermittant problem logging into my wireless broadband -running perfectly 1/3rd of the time and otherwise giving server not found or running slowly.

I'm sure this is not down to malware and just an incorrect/clashing configuration (or bad isp) - so I don't expect a reply. But I mention it just in case.

I will load the SpywareBlaster, SpywareGuard and IESpy-Ad to complete the picture and hope the connection problems abate!?!

Many thanks again.

Yours sincerely,

I don't believe your wireless problems are malware related, so I won't be able to help you for that problem. I suggest posting at the PC Pitstop Networking forum if these problems persist.

if you have any other questions or concerns, please do not heisitate to post back.

regards,
