Hi,
I've been here before. this is actually the second time I've come here for help with infections. I was taking classes in your University but I never had time to learn anything. So I'm back here on my knees pleading for help.
I was trying to play a windows media video I got off Limewire and it told me I needed Vcodec or something like that. Well here is the log.

Hello cyberfreak,

Welcome to the MalWare Removal forums! My name is Tim. I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems. HijackThis logs can take some time to research, so please be patient with me. I know that you need your computer working as quickly as possible, and I will work hard to help see that happens.

In order to help me help you, please observe the following while we work:

1. If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't continue, we don't want to start all over again!

2. Understand that cleaning your computer can sometimes take multiple passes/posts,
and it's important to follow the steps as listed including re-running scans as listed

3. Please reply to this thread, do not start another.

If you can do those three things, everything should go smoothly.

Hello cyberfreak

Ok you do have an infection.
This is information I pass along if log looks like there are 2 virus programs running. If you don't then move to next step.
It looks like you are running two Anti-Virus programs at one time that is bad. When runing two virus or firewall programs at one time can cause all kinds of conflicts system freezes, slow downs , and crashes systems is unstable here is more informations on what happens when running two AV,s.
LINK http://www.smartcomputing.com/editorial ... /38s07.asp

You have to disable one or uninstall one. If your subscription as expired and you can't get updates then that would be the one and out of date scanner is the same as not having one at all.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Please do the following.
These programs can prevent malware clearing. Please disable them if you have them running.

SpywareGuard

  1. Open Spywareguard
  2. Click on Menu
  3. Click on File
  4. Exit.

Don't forget to re-start SpywareGuard when your machine is clean.
----------------------------------------------------------------

Now this is next.

Download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) put on your desktop.
Extract all the files to your Destop. A folder named SmitfraudFix will be created on your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press Enter
This program will scan large amounts of files on your computer for known patterns so please be patient while it works. When it is done, the results of the scan will be displayed and it will create a log named rapport.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other options until you are asked to do so!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please post these in your next reply:
rapport.txt
New HJT log

You may need several replies to post the requested logs, otherwise they might get cut off

hi,
you said to disable one antivirus program but I'm not aware that I have more than one. I do have a couple of spyware removal programs, like Ad-aware, Spybot, Spyware Blaster, Spy Gaurd are these what you mean? I was under the impression that these programs actually don't interfer with one another. The only antivirus program that I'm aware of running is AVG Free Edition.....
There are a few things I see when I look at add and remove programs that I don't remember... but they may have been there before, maybe you can tell me, Rapidplayer v4.0 ActiveX Control, RUMBA SecureRedirector Client, S3 S3Display,S3 S3 Gamma2,S3 S3Info2, S3 S3Overlay, and Security Toolbar, ZipCodec 6.0 (I know the ZipCodec is bad cause this started with it) are they safe?

Before I move on to your instructions I will wait for you to clarify this because I'm not sure if I do have an extra antivirus program running. Maybe you can tell me what it looks like I'm running? Thanks

opps again....

Unread postby cyberfreak » July 5th, 2006, 7:12 am

Damb, I am really sorry now. When I did those two scans I did them from safe mode. I had my computer in safe mode because I don't have to watch the annoying pop-up advertisements while in safe mode. Should I have done the scans in normal mode? Please forgive my negligence I'm kind of out of sorts right now.

Hello cyberfreak,

Thanks for posting logs
Yes I will need HJT logs run in normal mode when ask to run and post. These need to be removed.

Click Start>Run, type in appwiz.cpl and hit Enter.
From the list, uninstall (remove) these if present
  • Security Toolbar
  • ZipCodec.
Now reboot computer.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please print out or copy these instructions/tutorial to Notepad as the internet will not be (while in Safe Mode) available to you at certain points of the removal process. Make sure to work through all the Steps in the exact order in which they are listed below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before moving on with the fixes.

Please download Ewido to your Desktop or to your usual Download Folder.
ewido anti-spyware tool
  • Close all other Applications
  • Install Ewido by double clicking the installer.
  • Select language click Ok
  • Click I Agree
  • Click next
  • Click Install
  • Make sure that Launch Ewido is checked
  • Click Finish
  • Wait Ewido will open main screen automatically.
  • If beside autoupdate shows active Wait again a few minutes and Ewido Should Auto update itself. If it shows inactive click update at top of screen.
  • This in very important to get updates
  • When updating has finished. On the main screen under Your Computer's security.

    • On Ewido screen look at Resident Shield click on change state to make it inactive.
  • Close Ewido.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.

Logs

Unread postby cyberfreak » July 5th, 2006, 8:48 pm

Problem is still there. My internet explorer homepage isn't about:blank any more but I'm still getting advertisements. And I have a foriegn icon on my desktop that links to "thesecuritytest.com", what ever that is (i've deleted the icon even though it will surely come back). I still have this blinking icon in my toolbar that warns me that I'm infected and it isn't one of my programs, could be that extra antivirus you thought I had running?
Here goes the hijack this log and the rapport. I'll do the rest in other replies.

question

Unread postby cyberfreak » July 6th, 2006, 7:41 am

I don't want to sound dumb, but I can't find this "Do a system scan only" button of which you speak. I do remember seeing a button like that when I first started Hijack this but I don't get that option when I start Hijack this anymore. What do I do?

Hi cyberfreak,

There are no dumb questions. If you have a question just ask.
The "Do system scan only" button should be second one down from top below the 'Do a system scan and save a log" button. When you first open HiJackThis. If not open HJT and run it the way you have been to generate a log but when note pad pops up close it and do not save that one. You should now have the HJT screen showing the lines that you have been posting here for me to check and there should be boxes to the left. Make sure just to check mark the lines given in red. Now you can continue with instructions in pervious post.

Hi cyberfreak,
This one AntiVirPersonalEditionClassic link to site http://www.free-av.com/

This looks like the one your are using here. >>>Grisoft
link to site http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1

They are two different programs. My wife uses AntiVirPersonalEditionClassic on her laptop.
I perfer Grisoft. But the wife likes the one she got. Both are Good but you can only run one at a time will causes all kinds of problems as mentioned before in earily post.
Look in your add/remove programs list to see if both are listed and let me know.
