Hi BluenoseMo,

There is nothing of any concern present in your log. You have a monitoring program that we will remove and a few resource hogs otherwise a nice clean machine.

  1. You have evidence of Real player on your machine
    • If it is RealOne Player then I would recommend its removal using Add or Remove Programs.
    • If you prefer to keep it OR it is the Real Player Classic then I suggest you navigate to C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\ and rename the Realsched.exe file to Realsched.exe.old
    • For further information see this post
  2. With all other windows closed, start your HijackThis and click on Scan
    1. Click in the check-box to the left of each of the following entries, if found
      • O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AlcxMonitor] ALCXMNTR.EXE
      • O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" –osboot

The following 2 programs do not need to run at startup, as such they are using your resources
      • O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" –atboottime
      • O8 - Extra context menu item: E&xport to Microsoft Excel - res://C:\PROGRA~1\MICROS~4\OFFICE11\EXCEL.EXE/3000

Finally I do not recommend the use of ‘Trusted Zones', although they may appear innocuous, once you have given them ‘Trusted’ status then they could put anything on your computer, so I would recommend that you also remove this entry from the log
      • O15 - Trusted Zone: http://www.qwizonline.com

    2. Select Fix Checked

  3. The last hog depends on whether you do any programming and debugging, the Machine Debug Manager is a running service and it can be disabled as follows.
    • Click Start and select Run
    • In the run box type Services.msc
    • In the Services Window scroll down and right-click on Machine Debug Manager
    • Select Properties from the drop-down menu.
    • In the General tab, if the service is running select Stop
    • Change the StartUp type to Manual or Disabled
    • Click OK and then close the Services Window

    Some general pointers next.
  4. First we make sure that any files in a System Restore point can not put your computer back to where it was by removing all old system restore points.
    1. Select the Start button and from the available options
    2. Right-click the My Computer option and select Properties.
    3. Click on the System Restore tab.
    4. Check the box against Turn off System Restore on all drives. Click OK
    5. Click Yes to confirm, then restart the computer
    6. After the restart, re-enable System Restore by following steps a-c, but in step c, click to clear the Turn off System Restore on all drives. check box.
  5. Check your Hidden & System files are at their normal state by

    1. Select the Start button and from the available options
    2. Right-click the My Computer option.
    3. Select Explore from the drop-down menu
    4. Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options. from the new window
    5. Select the View Tab.
    6. Under the Hidden files and folders heading remove the tick from Show hidden files and folders by clicking in the check-box to its left
    7. Replace the check against Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option, again by clicking the check-box to its left.
    8. Click Yes to confirm.
    9. Click OK.
  6. Finally, HijackThis makes backups of all corrections made in a sub-folder of your HJT folder called Backups. Please navigate to this Backups folder and delete the contents
Preventative measures
  1. I note that you have Spybot installed so if you do not have AdAware then please download it to complement your Spybot program, update and run them at regular intervals.
  2. In addition I would suggest that you install the following 3 free programs, keep these updated as they are background tools
    1. SpywareBlaster - Excellent prevention tool to keep Malware from installing on your system.
    2. SpywareGuard provides a shield against infection
    3. IE-SpyAd puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all. A tutorial is available here
  3. Windows Updates – It is very important to ensure that Internet Explorer and Windows are kept up to date with the latest critical security patches from Microsoft. Click on the Start button and select Windows Update, follow the online instructions from there.
  4. On a similar vein do ensure that all of your Anti-Virus and Anti-Malware software are also kept up to date.

    Best wishes and safe surfing

Thanks GT - I've done all of the above. Nice to know there was nothing of any concern present in my log - and I'm very grateful for all your tips to ensure I have a nice clean machine.

Now to get my daughter to do the same with her machine - I have a feeling her system is not quite so healthy.

All the best
